The purpose of the present study is to examine some basic aspects of laser chemical vapor deposition that will be ultimately utilized for solid freeform fabrication of three dimensional objects. Specifically, deposition of silicon carbide (SiC) using tetramethylsilane (TMS) as precursor was studied for a rod grown by CO₂ laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition. First, temperature distribution for substrate was analysed to select proper substrate where temperature is high enough for SiC to be deposited. Then, calculations of chemical equilibrium and heat and mass flow with chemical reactions were performed to predict deposition rates, deposit profiles, and deposit components. Finally, several rods were experimentally grown with varying chamber pressure and compared with the theoretical results.

A gun-type burne. fur a LPG(Liquified Petroleum Gas) boiler was utilized for hydrogen combustion. The study was performed to obtain fundamental data prior to the design of a very low NO$\_$x/, hydrogen-fueled burner. First, numerical simulations were performed to predict mixing characteristics between air and fuel flows, and temperature distributions, etc. Experimental study was then performed to find out flame lengths, temperature distributions, and NO$\_$x/ concentrations. The results showed that a gun-type burner for a LPG boiler can be successfully used for hydrogen combustion without any major retrofitting. The hydrogen flame was very stable and 75 ppm of NO$\_$x/ in average was observed for the conditions considered in this study. Hydrogen combustion could be therefore a solution to avoid the problem of green-house gas(CO$_2$) if hydrogen becomes cost-effective.

In this study, a hydrogen fueled gun-type burner was studied for CO_2 reduction First, cold flow was simulated to find out mixing characteristics between air and fuel flows using rotating reference frame for a fan modeling. Secondly, combustion was considered to investigate the effects of excess air ratio on species concentration and temperature distribution etc. Finally the experiments were performed to verify the numerical results in the aspects of flame length and temperature. The results showed that flow characteristics and temperature distributions qualitatively agreed well with the experiments. The present study could be therefore extended further to optimize the geometry of a gun-type burner.
