1970년대 등장한 사회생물학은 페미니즘의 강한 반발에 직면하였다. 그러나 1990년대 이후 지적 유행이 되고 있는 진화심리학에 대해 페미니즘은 침묵으로 반응해왔다. 사회생물학은 핵가족을 자연적인 것으로 보며 핵가족의 결속이 영구적인 이유를 인간 여성의 성적 수용성에서 찾았다. 즉 사회생물학은 20세기 중반 남성 생계 부양자 가족 형태를 자연화하고 그 보편성과 영속성의 근거를 생물학을 통해 뒷받침했다는 비판에서 자유로울 수 없었다. 반면 1990년대 이후 등장한 진화심리학은 핵가족을 상대화하여 남녀 결합의 여러 형태 중 하나로 그 위치를 재조정하였다. 여기서 여성은 주체화된 개체로서 다양한 남녀 관계를 선택하는 전략적 행위자가 된다. 또한 진화심리학은 남녀 관계에서 조화뿐 아니라 갈등에 주목하고 그 이유를 남녀의 진화된 성 심리와 전략의 차이를 통해 설명한다. 이제 진화심리학은 핵가족을 보편적이고 자연적인 것으로 보지 않으며 남녀 관계의 다양성과 갈등의 진화적 원인을 설명하는 데로 초점을 이동하였다. 진화론적 사회과학의 이러한 변모는 한편으로 페미니즘과 같은 과거 비판 진영의 입장을 누그러뜨렸고, 다른 한편으로 관련 주제의 새로운 사회이론들과의 친화력을 강화시켰다. 예컨대 진화심리학의 관점은 사실상 동시대 사회학자인 울리히 벡의 개인화 논의와 많은 부분 공통점을 갖는다. 진화심리학은 분석의 초점을 가족 단위에서 남녀 개인으로 옮겼고, 또한 개인의 전략적 선택과 그 선택이 낳는 남녀 관계 갈등에 분석의 상당 부분을 할애한다. 이런 점은 벡이 말하는 남녀의 가족적 존재에서 개인적 주체로의 변화, 개인 중심의 선택이 불가피해지는 상황, 선택이 야기하는 남녀 갈등에 대한 논의와 친화력을 보인다. 그런데 최근 개인화 현상이 서구 이상으로 가속화되고 있는 동아시아 지역의 차별적인 상황을 함께 감안하면, 진화심리학과 벡의 개인화론의 이론적 공통점은 기본적으로 서구의 후기 근대라는 특정한 역사·사회적 맥락에 기초한 것이며, 진화심리학적 논의가 비서구적 상황에 적용될 때 개인-가족-사회관계에 대해 내용적으로 훨씬 복잡하고 정교한 발전을 거쳐야 할 필요성을 암시한다. When sociobiology emerged on the scene in the 1970s, it was met by strong resistance from feminism. However, since becoming a popular intellectual current in the 1990s, evolutionary psychology has been met by silence from feminist camps. Sociobiology “naturalizes” the nuclear family and finds a biological reason for the eternal family bondage in the characteristics of female sexuality. As a result, sociobiology was inevitably criticized for its naturalizing and advocating of the nuclear family and patriarchy. Evolutionary psychology, on the other hand, relativizes the nuclear family and re-adjusts its position as but one of multiple forms of union between male and female. Here, women, as subjectivized individuals, are strategic agents who select from a variety of male-female relations. In addition, evolutionary psychology points not only to harmony but also to conflicts in male-female relations, explaining the conflicts in terms of the different sexual psychologies and strategies that have evolved for the two respective genders. Evolutionary psychology does not view the nuclear family as universal and “natural”, and moves its focus to the explanation of evolutionary causes for the various clashes in male-female relations. On the one hand, this development in evolutionary social science has allayed the erstwhile critical stance of feminism, while on the other hand, it has strengthened affinities with new, thematically-related social theories. For example, the perspective of evolutionary psychology bears many points in common with sociologist Ulrich Beck’s contemporary discussions of individualization. Evolutionary psychology shifts analytical focus from the family unit to the individual man and woman, and gives extensive analytical weight to the strategic choices made by the individual and the gender conflicts those choices cause. This point shows affinity with Beck’s discussions of the shift from family to individual subject, the conditions inevitably created by individual-centered choice, and inter-gender conflicts brought about by that choice. However, considering together the differential conditions of the East Asian region where the phenomenon of individualization is currently accelerating even faster than in the West, it is concluded that the theoretical commonality between evolutionary psychology and Beck’s thesis of individualization is fundamentally based in the particular socio-historical context of the late modern West. Evolutionary psychology, if to be applicable to non-Western contexts, faces a necessity for much more complex and elaborate evolutions regarding relations between individual, family, and society.
