Vol.53 No.2

Socio-structural causes of crime have been examined through the years and much attention has been paid to one of the suspects, income inequality. The relationship between income inequality and many different types of crime has been studied within different contexts and through different approaches. In spite of the growing body of literature on this issue, little research has been conducted in the Korean context. This study explores several possible links between income inequality and crimes across 13 regions. The study empirically examined the relationship between income inequality and many different types of crime using a fixed-effects negative binomial regression model with a control of unobserved group effects and other determinants of crime such as poverty and policing. Several findings emerged: there is a statistically significant relationship between property crime and income inequality as measured by the Gini coefficient. Theft, in particular among property crimes, showed a stronger relationship that leads us to expect that increased income inequality in a region may induce a person to commit a crime due to profit-seeking motives. Furthermore, assault seems to be related to poverty rather than inequality, which suggests different motivations work differently across crime types. These results are not sensitive to an alternative model using crime rate as a dependent variable.
