Although English is not considered as a numeral classifier language, the language has the construction of (Det) N1 pp [ of (Det) N2 ], which is similar to the one shown in typical numeral classifier languages. The purpose of this study was threefold: 1) to suggest a possible comprehensive list of the N1 slot, 2) explore differences between English and typical numeral classifier languages, and 3) identify linguistic phenomena observed in English language in particular. With a reference to an English-English dictionary, it has been found that there are roughly 194 possible members of N1 in English. Unlike typical numeral classifier languages, English allows plural forms that appear in the N1 slot as in ‘two loaves of bread’, and an adjective can be inserted between ‘a’ and N1 as in ‘a neat stack of papers.’ It has been found that, among the 194 members, ‘group’ classifiers are roughly 33%, and ‘measurement’ classifiers are 26%. It has also been found that English has various group classifiers, especially for animals, depending on specific animals or specific meanings like ‘under the care’.
