학생들이 충동적으로 학교를 그만 두는 것을 방지하고 학업중단 여부를 신중하게 결정할 수 있도록 돕기 위한 학업중단숙려제가 전국적으로 시행된 지 4년이 되었으나 아직 일선 학교상담 현장에서는 학업중단숙려제 상담에 대한 혼란과 어려움이 있다. 학업중단 숙려기간 동안 상담을 통해 자신의 결정을 돌아보고 자퇴이후의 삶에 대한 계획을 점검하는 것이 목적이기 때문에 학업중단숙려제가 성공적으로 시행되기 위해서는 그만큼 상담이 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 학업중단숙려제 상담을 효과적으로 진행하면서 학업중단 위기에 있는 청소년을 위한 적절한 개입 방안을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 우선 학업중단에 영향을 미치는 요인과 학업중단 과정의 단계별 특징 및 학업중단숙려제의 대상이 되는 학업중단 위기 청소년의 특성과 학업중단숙려제 운영 방법에 대해 문헌고찰을 통해 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 학업중단숙려제 상담의 특수성으로 단기로 정해져있는 상담 횟수, 학업중단이라는 상담의 주제, 비자발적 상담으로 인한 동기부족, 다양한 이해관계의 대립, 상담소견서 작성의 다섯 가지를 제시하였고, 각각의 특성에 대해 효과적인 학업중단숙려제 상담진행을 위한 제안을 하였다. 또한 학업중관 과정의 각 단계별 개입방법을 제시하였다.
