        On this 500th anniversary of the Reformation, The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Korea (HapDong) is in a position to sustain both reformed theology in general as well as the world’s largest Presbyterian denomination. In keeping with this theological tradition and the scale of its membership, there are three significant areas that the General Assembly must take responsibility over. First, it must take responsibility for keeping hold of the essential tenets of orthodox reformed theology. To that end, regular re-education of pastors is essential. Second, it must take responsibility in strengthening the Church’s essential mission of evangelization. To this end, a correct theology of church growth alongside a vigorous church planting movement needs to be established. Third, it must take responsibility for social service and social action, particularly in recognizing its public and historical responsibility. For this, pastoral ethics, including the ethical management of churches, and the public engagement of the church and of its members should be instructed.

      • 김익두 목사의 부흥회와 그 특성

        This article is focused on Pastor Ik Doo Kim"s 776 revival meetings and the reasons for their effectiveness. Two hallmarks characterized these revival meetings. First, they drew huge crowds, despite a poor infrastructure for transportation and public communication. Second, there was an emphasis on the power of the Holy Spirit, which led to repentance and healing. In addition, Pastor Kim"s revival meetings contained two characteristics that led to its success: his sermons and his healing ministry. His preaching captivated his audience because he understood his audience’s context and had an ability to apply his sermons appropriately. This understanding led to several characteristics familiar in his sermons: 1) language familiar to the working class or the market place; 2) biblically sound and practically applicable points; 3) use of audiovisual and other engaging elements; 4) thorough spiritual preparation. His healing ministry also had several characteristics: 1) a three-stage progressive development of healing ministry; 2) orthodox and consistent theology; 3) immediate testimonies of any healing that occurred; 4) bold steadfastness in the face of fierce criticism and opposition; 5) true and genuine results of healing. Both contemporary and present day critics have criticized Pastor Kim. In particular, some present day church historians claim that Pastor Kim was instrumental in forming the foundation of the present day Korean church, which has often been though to be unrealistic and overly focused on success and prosperity. Despite such criticism, it is clear that God called Pastor Kim, empowered him, and used him for the birth of the Korean church during a crucial era.

        사도 바울의 복음전파를 위한 전략 연구

        기독교 역사에 있어서 입지적인 공헌을 한 사도 바울은 선교사요, 교회개척가요, 설교자요, 신학자이다. 본 논문의 목적은 바울의 복음전파를 위해 사용한 전략을 연구하는 것이다. 바울에게 복음전파를 위한 전략이 있었는가는지금도 논란의 대상이다. 분명한 사실은 바울의 복음전파 사역을 살펴보면일종의 패턴이 존재한다는 것이다. 필자는 그러한 패턴들을 바울의 전략이라고 말하고 싶다. 오늘 교회들은 바울의 전략들을 발견해 내고 그것들을 적용하고 발전시켜야 한다. 본 논문에서는 1) 성령의 인도하심에 철저한 의존,2) 복음전파 최우선, 3) 육체노동 활용, 4) 복음에 대한 수용성 고려, 5) 거점지역 중심의 사역, 6) 토착화교회 설립 등을 바울의 전략으로 다루고 있다. 오늘 한국교회는 복음전파라는 미명하에 감성주의, 인본주의, 실용주의, 그리고 물량주의에 기초한 전도방법이 성행하고 있다. 모든 한국교회가 지독히도 교회성장에 몰두해 왔지만, 결과는 오히려 한국교회의 쇠퇴로 이어지고 있다. 이러한 때일수록 한국교회는 성경적인 복음전파 전략으로 돌아가야만 한다. 그렇기에 사도 바울의 복음전파 전략이 절실히 요구된다 하겠다. Apostle Paul, who greatly contributed to the establishment of Christianity, was a missionary, church planter, preacher, and theologian. The purpose of this paper is to study Paul`s evangelism strategies. Though whether Paul did or did not have pre-formulated evangelism strategies prior to his missionary journeys is up for debate, it is clear that there were consistent patterns in Paul`s evangelistic mission trips. This writer believes that these consistent patterns amount to a specific strategy that Paul used. The Church today must discover, develop, and utilize Paul`s strategies. This paper will deal with the six points of Paul`s strategy for evangelism: 1) thorough dependence on the Holy Spirit, 2) prioritization of the proclamation of the Gospel, 3) utilization of physical labor (tent-making mission), 4) consideration of the receptivity of the Gospel, 5) strategic point-centered evangelism, and 6) the establishment of an indigenous church. The Church in Korea, in the name of evangelism, has developed methods based on emotionalism, humanism, pragmatism, and Momonism. This has led to the decline of the Korean Church, though the focus on church growth remains strong. It is time for the Church in Korea to return to a biblical basis for evangelism and church growth, centering on Paul`s strategies in the Bible. Thus, an attention to Apostle`s Paul`s strategy is urgently required.

      • 개혁신학에서 바라본 21세기 한국의 이주민 전도전략

        Korea has traditionally been a monoethnic and monocultural nation that has consciously worked to maintain this state through an attitude of nationalistic exclusivity towards other cultures and peoples. However, since the end of the 20th century, migrants such as workers, families, students, and North Korean defectors, have come to Korea – there are now more than 2 million migrants in Korea. Despite this new social situation, the Korean attitude towards migrants remains exclusive. It is important to recognize that Korea should abandon their exclusive attitude towards migrants and include them in total equality in Korean society. The Korean church is especially responsible for making this change. In light of this, what should be the attitude of the Korean church and what should be the evangelistic strategy towards these migrants? This paper is the result of an effort to find the answer to that question. The Korean church should see migrants as neighbors in Korean society and create this kind of social atmosphere, because the Old and New Testaments and the history of the church commands this inclusion. In addition, the Korean church should develop an evangelistic mission towards migrants that includes the following: first, a perspective that takes in account the identity of migrants as part of the family of God; second, a regard for migrants as “the ends of the earth;” third, an understanding of the migrant’s home culture; fourth, a primary focus on the salvation of migrants; fifth, a bearing of the social responsibility to meet the actual needs of migrants; sixth, a systematic strategy and implementation of that strategy at the denominational level.

      • 김익두 목사의 생애와 신학

        This paper examines the life and theology of Pastor Ik Doo Kim who was used tremendously for the kingdom of God during a difficult era of Korean history. The writer will prove that Pastor Kim was not just a charismatic evangelist but also a Presbyterian minister who upheld orthodox theology and gave hope to a miserable people under Japanese imperialism and, soon thereafter, Communist domination in North Korea. Pastor Kim was an ordinary person who suffered through much wandering before he was called, which totally changed his life. He lived as a lay evangelist, a minister of a local church, and a professional evangelist before martyrdom. Even though there is not much substance to analyze through his writings and works, his theology (the Doctrine of God, soteriology, christology, pneumatology, and ecclesiology) was very conservative, orthodox, and Reformed. Despite some obvious and unavoidable criticism of Pastor Kim, he was a pastor who received God’s special calling on behalf of Korea, a preacher who urged reformation of a collapsed Korean society, and an evangelist who, with special spiritual power, gave hope and courage to the Korean people in a difficult time.

      • “통일 목회”의 당위성, 그리고 이를 위한 “조선족”의 가치와 역할에 관한 연구

        한민족이 70여 년 동안 분단 된 것은 아픈 역사이다. 그렇기에 분단된 한반도의 통일은 한민족 모두의 소원이다. 그렇기에 지금은 통일을 열망하는 시대라 할 수 있으며, 이 시대의 교회의 중요한 목회가 “통일 목회”라 할 수 있다. 필자는 이 논문에서 한국 교회가 지향해야만 하는 통일 목회에 대한 정의와 통일 목회의 당위성, 그리고 통일 목회에 있어서 “조선족”의 가치와 역할이 무엇인지를 연구했다. “통일 목회”에 대한 명확한 정의가 아직 확립되어 있지 않다. 통일 목회에 대한 전문가들의 정의가 하나로 수렴되지 않았기 때문이다. 따라서 필자는 몇몇 전문가들의 통일 목회에 대한 개별적 정의를 살펴보고 그것들의 약점을 분석했다. 그리고 개혁주의 신학에 기초한 통일 목회의 정의를 시도하였다. 필자는 “왜 한국 교회는 통일 목회 사역을 수행해야 하는가? 하나님께서는 통일을 어떻게 보시는가? 성경은 통일에 대해 무엇이라고 말하고 있는가? 통일 목회 사역이 어떻게 교회의 필수적인 사명과 관련이 있는가?” 등의 질문에 답함으로 통일 목회 사역의 당위성을 찾았다. 또한, 필자는 통일 목회를 위해 조선족의 가치와 역할은 무엇인지를 연구했다. 통일 목회의 대상에는 남북한 주민 8천만과 재외동포 700만이 포함된다. 이 재외동포에는 조선족이 포함되어 있다. 조선족이 특별한 통일 목회 대상이자 한반도 통일과 북한 선교를 위한 도구가 되는 이유는 조선족의 정체성과 그들의 역사 그리고 그들만의 독특한 선교자원 때문이다. 많은 한국 교회들이 통일 목회 사역을 하나님의 부르심으로 깨닫고, 그것을 시대의 사명으로 받아들여야 한다. 또한, 입양 아동과도 같은 “조선족”이야말로 한반도 통일을 위해 준비된 자원임을 인식하여 이들을 위해 사역하고 이들과 협력한다면 북한 선교와 한반도 통일 선교에 크게 유익할 것이다. Unification of the Korean Peninsula is the hope of all Koreans. It has been a heartbreaking history for over 70 years since the division of the nation and the nation. If there is the most important issue in the history of division, it is probably “unification”. Therefore, it is not wrong to say that the Korean Peninsula, which has walked to this day with a wish for unification, lives in the era of unification. And the Korean church pastoring in this era of unification is doing unification pastoral ministry. Today, the Korean church should pay attention to unification pastoral ministry. As a “Joseonjog,” I hope the South and the North Korea will be unified. At the same time, as a pastor, I hope to minister to the unification of the Korean Peninsula. So I began to study the definition of the “unification pastoral ministry,” the justification of unification pastoral ministry, and what the value and role of “Joseonjog” in unification pastoral ministry is. Unfortunately, there is no unified definition of the “unification pastoral ministry.” This seems to be because experts’ definition of unification pastoral ministry has not converged into one. As a result of analyzing the various definitions of several experts on the unification pastoral ministry, I found that there are some weaknesses in the areas of ministry and the essential mission of the church. Therefore, based on Reformed theology, I intend to unify and define aspects such as God’s sovereignty, the essential mission of the church, the realization of the kingdom of God, and the orientation to world mission with NK mission. And, why should the Korean church conduct the unification pastoral ministry? This can be obtained in part from the definition of the unification pastoral ministry, but it is not enough. Therefore, it is necessary to examine whether there is a biblical basis for discussing the justification of the unification pastoral ministry. “How does God view unification?” and “What does the Bible say about unification?” proves how the unification pastoral ministry is related to the essential mission of the church. Furthermore, it will show what the current situation on the Korean Peninsula is and how North Korea is making changes. Through this, it is expected that the Korean church will accept the unification pastoral mission. In addition, through the unification pastoral ministry, I would like to share what the value and role of the “Joseonjog” is, thinking about “what important role will the ”Joseonjog“ play in North and South Korea.” In the unification pastoral ministry, 80 million Koreans living in South and North must be the main target for the ministry. And we must not forget that all 7 million overseas compatriots wish for unification of the two Koreas. However, if you look at the reason why the “Joseonjog” is the object of a special unification ministry here, it is because the identity and history of “Joseonjog,” and their own mission resources have unique characteristics that no other oversea Koreans have. Through this paper, I hope that more Korean churches can realize the unification pastoral ministry as God’s calling and accept it as the mission of the times. In addition, I hope that the “Joseonjog,” such as an adopted child, will be recognized as a resource for unification pastoral ministry and North Korean mission that God has prepared for unification of the Korean Peninsula. I believe that if we mission to these people, minister to them, and cooperate with them, we will glorify God through North Korean mission and the unification of the Korean Peninsula.

      • 박용묵 목사의 생애와 부흥 사역

        한국교회 역사를 살펴보면 많은 부흥사들이 등장했었다. 부흥사들은 다양한 모습으로 자신의 시대에 맞게 활동하였다. 박용묵은 1950년대 한국교회 무대에 등장하여 1960년대와 1970년대 큰 영향력을 미친 부흥사이다. 그는 1974년 설립된 “한국기독교부흥협의회” 초대 회장으로 추대되었고, 여러 대형 전도집회에 힘을 집결시켰다. 이처럼 박용묵은 한국교회의 성장시기에 큰 역할을 감당하였기에 그의 생애와 부흥 사역을 연구하는 것은 의미가 있다. 연구자가 박용묵의 생애와 부흥 사역을 연구하기 위해 사용한 방법은 문헌연구이다. 1차로 참고한 문헌은 박용묵의 저서들이다. 그는 28권의 책을 저술하였고 현재는 15권이 전해진다. 2차로 참고한 문헌은 박용묵에 대한 연구논문이다. 국회전자도서관에 등록된 논문들 중 “박용묵”으로 검색했을 때에 찾을 수 있는 글은 최찬용과 주강식의 글이다. 또한 박용묵에 대해 연구할 수 있는 자료들은 박용묵의 장남 박재천, 5남 박상은 그리고 6남 박상진이 저술한 단행본과 글들이 있고, 박용묵의 가족 중심으로 이루어진 영파선교회의 활동 등에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 박용묵을 원로목사로 추대한 대길교회의 50년사 또한 참고할 수 있는 자료이다. 본 소논문은 위의 자료들을 바탕으로 첫째로 박용묵의 생애를, 둘째로 박용묵의 부흥 사역을 연구하였다. 박용묵의 생애에 관해서는 유년 시절부터 목회자로의 부르심, 그리고 박용묵이 목회하였던 경북 덕촌교회, 박사교회, 대구 문화교회, 동신교회, 서울 대길교회 중심으로 기술하였다. 박용묵의 부흥 사역에 관한 것은 그가 강조하였던 사역의 원칙, 전도의 방법론, 사역의 특징 그리고 부흥 사역의 열매로 전해지는 것들을 연구하였다. 박용묵은 부흥사, 목회자 그리고 한 가정의 가장으로서 한국교회 목회자들에게 본이 되는 생애와 부흥 사역을 보여주었다. 오늘날처럼 한국교회가 세상으로부터 외면과 질타를 당하고 있는 때에 박용묵과 같은 목회자요 부흥사가 출현할 수 있다면 세상에 희망을 말할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 본 소논문을 통해 그와 같은 부흥사들의 생애와 부흥 사역이 활발히 연구될 수 있기를 소망한다. Looking at the history of the Korean church, many evangelist have appeared. They were active in various ways to suit their times. Park Yong-mook is a the evangelist that appeared on the stage of Korean churches in the 1950s and had great influence in the 1960s and 1970s. He was elected as the first president of the “Korean Christian Revival Council” established in 1974, and he concentrated on several large evangelistic meetings. Like this, Park Yong-mook played a large role in the growth period of the Korean church, so it is meaningful to study his life and revival ministry. The method used by the researcher to study the life and revival ministry of Park Yong-mook is literature research. The primary references were Park Yong-mook’s books. He has written 28 books, and now 15 books are handed down. The second referenced document is a research paper on Park Yong-mook. Among the papers registered in the National Assembly Library, the ones you can find when searching for “Park Yong-mook” are those of Choi Chan-yong and Joo Kang-sik. In addition, there are books and articles written by Park Yong-mook’s first son, Park Jae-cheon, 5th son Park Sang-eun, and 6th son Park Sang-jin, and the others can be found in the activities of Youngpa Mission, which is made up with Park Yong-mook’s family. The 50-year history of Daegil Church, which elected Park Yong-mook as the elder pastor, is also a reference. The researcher first studied the life of Park Yong-mook, and the secondly researched Park’s revival ministry. Park Yong-mook’s life was described mainly from his calling as a pastor from childhood, and the Gyeongbuk Deokchon Church, Parksa Church, Daegu Moonhwa Church, Dongshin Church, and Seoul Daegil Church, where Park Yong-mook ministered. Through Park Yong-mook’s revival ministry, we studied the principles of ministry, methodology of evangelism, characteristics of the ministry, and the contents conveyed as the fruit of the revival ministry. As a evangelist, pastor and head of a family, Park Yong-mook showed the life and revival ministry that set an example for Korean church pastors. When the Korean church is being neglected and criticized from people like today, if a pastor like Park Yong-mook emerge, we can tell them hope. Also, through this essay, I hope that the life and ministry of such evangelist can be actively studied.
