Performance tests of the plate-fin type heat exchanger for high temperature application have been performed with a high temperature heat exchanger performance test facility. The facility consists of air compressor, electric heaters, venturi flow meters, flow control valves, and combination probes which can measure temperature, total and static pressures at the same time. The performance tests were carried out near the heat exchanger design condition and off-design conditions, and the test results were compared with the calculated results. The test results showed lower heat exchanging efficiency and smaller pressure drop than the calculated results. Based on the difference, the modified design of the heat exchanger was offered.

Plate-fin type recuperators for the gas turbine/fuel cell hybrid power generating system were designed using commercial design software, MUSE. Heat transfer efficiency and total pressure drop in the recuperator were calculated to confirm required recuperator performance. Both counter flow and cross flow type plate-fin recuperators were designed. Results show that the counter flow type has higher efficiency and short core length, but the cross flow type is simpler to construct because the cross flow type does not need additional distributors. Two or three headers for the each recuperator core will be designed and tested to evaluate best header design. The designed recuperators and headers which will be designed later will be constructed, tested, and used in gas turbine/fuel cell hybrid power generating system.

An experimental study on the performance and instability development characteristics of a centrifugal compressor equipped with a cambered variable diffuser has been performed with varying diffuser vane angles. The test was conducted at the design speed of 20,800 rpm and the 80% design speed of 16,640 rpm for 5 diffuser angles : 65$^{\circ}$, 70$^{\circ}$, 75$^{\circ}$, 77.5$^{\circ}$, 80$^{\circ}$ The steady performance test results showed that choking mass flow rate decreases and total pressure ratio increases with a narrowed surge margin as the diffuser vane angle increases. Unsteady pressures were measured using high-frequency pressure transducers at the inducer and the diffuser throat to investigate the instability phenomena such as rotating stall and surge inside the compressor. From the unsteady measurements, it is found that the transient process from rotating stall to surge was mainly affected by diffuser angles. The results of the present study can be applied to the instability control of the centrifugal compressors using a variable diffuser.

Performance of a gas turbine combustor installed in a test facility has been studied by measuring spatially- and temporally-resolved temperature distributions using multiplex CARS technique. 500 CARS temperatures were determined at each measuring point to obtain a histogram of temperature distribution. Experiments were carried out in the aero-engine combustor sector rig burning standard kerosene fuel. The histograms were obtained around a triple-sector double annular rig running in ground idle conditions, showing features of flow mixing within the rig. The temperature histograms that prove the existence of high temperatures above 1900 K provide us valuable information to improve the design of the combustor structure suppressing NOx generation in turbulent combustion processes. The effects of swirl direction and pre-filmer on gas turbine combustion were investigated. When we installed radial swirls, a large recirculation zone was formed by the fuel module regardless of swirl directions and the pre-filmer installation. It is found that the swirl direction affects the shape of the reverse flow zone, however. Also, an attempt to estimate the flow field and flame structure is made using the histogram of temperature determined with the CARS technique.

A non-intrusive measurement, Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence was employed to visualize the distribution of fuel distribution in the non-reacting field at the exit of fuel mixing duct. The most important thing for quantitative measurement, linear proportionality between fluorescence signal intensity and tracer concentration was shown up here. And the Image processing method and quantification procedure was represented, too.

A Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence(PLIF) method was employed to measure the fuel concentration of the non-reacting field at the burner exit of DLN type gas turbine combustor. Experimental setup, image processing method and quantification method for fuel concentration used in this study were presented in this paper. Also, concentration measurement with gas analyzer was carried out to verify the propriety of the method used. The PLIF result coincides well with the gas analyzer measurement result. PLIF test results for several other conditions are mentioned as well.
