Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate nursing professionalism and affecting factors of nursing professionalism in freshman nursing students. Methods: Pre and post-test study design was used to compare the differences of sutdy variables at the completion of a fundamental nursing course. A convenience sample of 164 were recruited. The date were collected from September 1st to December 1st in 2012. Results: The mean scores of the nursing professionalism were significantly increased from a pre-test (3.73) to post-test (3.93). The mean scores of the self-esteem were significantly increased from a pre-test (3.05) to post-test (3.13). Self-esteem and satisfaction with nursing were factors that affect nursing professionalism. Conclusion: Attention should be given to nursing education to cultivate nursing professionalism by improving self-esteem and satisfaction with nursing in nursing students.

Purpose: Securin is a regulatory protein, which plays a central role in chromosome stability and control of the metaphase-anaphase transition and anaphase onset. Securin blocks separase/extra spindle pole bodies homolog 1 function, preventing the proteolysis of the subsequent dissociation of the chromosome. Securin is expressed at low level in most tissues, but many patient suffering epithelial neoplasms are overexpressed. The aim our study was to evaluate whether securin affects tumorigenesis and prognosis in patients of colorectal cancer. Methods: To clarify the roles of securin in colorectal tumorigenesis, its expression was examined by immunohistochemistry on a tissue microarray with its comparison with clinicopathologic parameters and prognosis survivals of the colorectal carcinomas. Results: Securin was overexpressedin 272 (76.2%) of 357 colorectal carcinomas. Overexpression of securin was correlated with gender (P=0.060), pathologic T stage (P=0.006) and tumor node metastasis stage (P=0.002), but securin overexpression was not correlated with lymphovascular invasions. Securin overexpression was not correlated with 5-year survival rate by Kaplan-Miere survival model. Conclusion: Securin expression was correlated with T stage and TNM (tumor node and metastasis) stage in colorectal cancer. Our study showed a possible role for securin in colorectal tumorigenesis. These findings indicate that securin has a function of tumorigenesis with tumor enlargement, not of lymphovasculogenesis.

Purpose: Defensin alpha 6 (DEFA6) is cationic short peptide with known functional activities in innate antimicrobial immunity. DEFA6 is also highly expressed in colorectal cancer tissue. The mechanism and function of DEFA6 have not been reported how to play a significant role in carcinogenesis and cancer progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protumorigenic functions of DEFA6 in the colorectal cancer cell line and the clinical significance of DEFA6 expression in colorectal cancer patients. Methods: DEFA6 expression was investigated by immunohistochemistry in 151 cases of colorectal cancer tissue and the association of DEFA6 expression was correlated with patient’s cancer charecteristics. Results: Immunohistochemistry analysis showed that the DEFA6 protein was expressed higher in advanced cancer group (high T stage, patients with lymph node metastasis, patients with vascular invasion) than early cancer group (low T stage, patients without lymph node metastasis, patients without vascular invasion) (P=0.007/0.032/0.047). Conclusion: As patient’s survival usually depends on migration and invasion of the cancer cell, the high expression of DEFA6 in colorectal cancer cell is associated with patient’s cancer charecteristics and could be a biomarker for colorectal cancer. The future study about characterization of DEFA6 will clarify its specific role in oncogenesis and its therapeutic potential.

Purpose: Neuropilin-2 is expressed by venous and lymphatic endothelial cells and can bind the lymphangiogenesis-associated ligand vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C and D. Recently, neuropilin-2 was shown to play a role in lymph node metastasis and cancer promotion. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical relevance of neuropilin-2 expression in colorectal carcinomas. Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis of neuropilin-2 expression of 350 colorectal cancer samples was evaluated using tissue microarray. The relationship between neuropilin-2 expression and other clinicopathological variables were analyzed in colorectal carcinomas. To clarify the role of neuropilin-2 in colorectal cancer lymphangiogenesis, its expression was examined with VEGF-C, VEGF-D, and VEGF receptor 3 expression of the colorectal carcinomas. Results: Neuropilin-2 was detected in 176 of 350 colorectal carcinomas (50.3%). Overexpression of neuropilin-2 was correlated with lymph node metastasis (P=0.041) and VEGF-D expression (P=0.020), but was not correlated with TNM (tumor, node, metastasis) stage, other lymphangiogenic factor expression and survival colorectal cancer patients. Conclusion: Neuropilin-2 expression was correlated with lymph node metastasis and VEGF-D expression in colorectal carcinomas. Our results suggest a possible role of neuropilin-2 in lymphangiogenesis and cancer progression in colorectal carcinomas.
