Tianzifang is overlapping area of western and modern china’s imageswith remodelled traditional Shanghai style “stone gate(Shikumen)” houses. There are full of small crafts shops and restaurants, cafés and pubs with exotic mood and their western images mixed with traditional style of “stone gate” create a very unique atmosphere. Also a nearby modern shopping mall makes the place, a city centre museum. Tianzifang’s mixed cultural face of western and China and change into the place where foreigners and Chinese consume together have three different backgrounds. First, Tianzifang could turn into a modern, artistic and multi-cultural alley where you can enjoy international art and culture because of political supports from Shanghai Municipal Government towards creative city, building an international city emphasizing cultural elements. Second, cultural nostalgia for the 30’s Shanghai passed through movies and books mixed with Midwest culture formed peculiar memories and emotions of Shanghai called “Magic City(Mado)”, and it made Tianzifang’s sense of place. Third, Tianzifang is established through the close partnership with residents, enterprises and government to change exiting city into “sustainable city” where the culture is in harmony with environment. Through the case of Shanghai Tianzifang, for urban regeneration, we can find the importance of communication between local residents and the government on the basis of understanding regional history and culture.
