In this study a reliability-based design procedure for determining design criteria of the sheet pile walls subjected to soil pressure is proposed. PEM(point estimation method) for the reliability analysis of the sheet pile wall has been described and a computer program has been presented for use with the PEM. PEM does not require the evaluation of derivatives of the evaluation equation as do the FOSM(first order second moment) or AFOSM(advanced FOSM) Methods. Examples of reliability calculation of the sheet pile walls using PEM have been described and compared with the MFOSM(mean first order second moment) methods.

Development of design method based on probability theory sublating discrepancy of definitive design standards in designing foundation structure is needed. This study develops uncertainties of resistance and load effect of foundation structures in order to introduce the concept of probabilistic design based on reliability into foundation structures, estimate reliability index suitable to foundation structures, compares and analyzes safety and durability performance.
