Considerable numbers of earthquake have been reported steadily in Korea. Under this circumstance, there is a need to consider about the importance of the building as a shelter place and existing school buildings could be used as one of the buildings with the purpose. However, they are not designed by seismic design criteria because most of their height is under 6th floor. And there are not any seismic capacity evaluation provisions established in Korea. The aim of this paper is to verify validity of nonlinear static analysis and to evaluate seismic performance of school buildings using Capacity Spectrum Method. The analytical study was performed with Drain-2dx program. It is indicated that Pushover Analysis was acceptable to evaluate the seismic performance of low-rise school buildings. Analysis results also indicate that school buildings have satisfied seismic capacity about lateral deformation limits but failed about elements response limits for immediate occupancy.
