Yu-zhi-qing-wen-jian(1708)(QWJ) is the first Manchu dictionary by which the standard orthography of written Manchu is fixed. For the historical study of the Manchu language, I presume, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of Manchu of QWJ thoroughly first. The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of the orthography of the entries in QWJ, as a basic study of the historical study of Manchu. The number of the Manchu entries of QWJ amounts to 12,100 entries. Among them, only about 285 entries of QWJ are replaced with new Manchu words or phrases when they complied the new edition of QWJ, Yu-zhi-zeng-ding-qing-wen-jian(1771)(ZDQWJ). The rest and almost all of the entries of QWJ are fixed as the standard orthographic forms of written Manchu thereafter, during the Qing dynasty. This paper compiled a contrastive list of the 285 entries of QWJ and ZDQWJ, and examined some phonological characteristics and the principle of the orthography found in the written Manchu of QWJ. Peculiar entries in QWJ above mentioned can be divided into two groups: (1) Chinese loan words, which amount to about 180 entries, and (2) Original Manchu words, which amount to about 100 entries. The first group is divided again into two sub-groups: (A) Chinese loan words which are replaced by loan translation Manchu words in ZDQWJ, and (B) Chinese loan words which are replaced by new Manchu words. A. boosˇi(QWJ)→erimbu wehe(ZDQWJ) 'jewel' ; baise→lafu sogi 'Chinese cabbage' B. dengse→dengneku 'a small steelyard' ; jung→jungken 'bell' In the remaining entries of Original Manchu Words, we can examine the orthographic characteristics of the words and phrases in QWJ and some phonological processes happened in the early Manchu as shown in the following. 1. aguse(QWJ)→agusa(ZDQWJ) ; conggai→cunggai ; delhe→delhen hasuralambi→hasurgalambi ; eniyehen→enihen 2. joliku ̄→jooliku ̄ ; joolimbi→jolimbi 3. umgan, umhan→umgan ; umgan, umhan→umhan 4. sˇanggiyan→sˇanyan, sˇanggiyan 5. ebisˇembi→ebisˇembi, elbisˇembi
