One of the main causes of severe wear or crack initiation in wheel and rail is the contact stress due to wheel-rail contact. First, we obtain contact stress due to the rail mounting slope using the finite element method. Second, the shape design based on more reasonable contact stress analysis rather th~n a general Hertzian contact theory is investigated in order to reduce the contact stress. The optimum -design is performed using the simple 2-D finite element model and its results are verified by 311) finite element analysis.

Many researchers have dealt with the problems of fracture mechanics. Generally, these researches are concerned with crack in isotropic material without other micro defects. Actual structure, however, may contain micro defects as well as crack in manufacture processing or operation. If it contains mi defects near a crack, some different characteristics will be appear in fracture behaviors of the crack. This study examines the effect of the micro defect on stress intensity factor of center slant crack rectangular plate subjected to uniform uniaxial tensile stress. In this study, boundary element method(BEM) is used for analysis in stress intensity factor(SIF).

It is generally known that the PRAT(Plysteer Residual Aligning Torque) is one of indicating a performance factors of a tire for assessing the vehicle pull. It is also known that cornering stiffness has relation to the steering response in handling test. This paper has studied about the correlation between PRAT, cornering stiffness and tire design factors using FEM. Analysis variables(design factors) for this study are belt angle, EPI, cord diameter and carcass turn up height. We also have studied the correlation between PRAT and the different lateral groove types. This paper introduces the modeling method using ABAQUS CAE for PRAT analysis including 3-D patterned modeling.<br/> Finally, the correlation between the vehicle pull and PRAT has been investigated about the 3 types of the pattern using ADAMS S/W.
