This paper presents the discharge characteristics and economic feasibility of a Dry $Air/O_2$ and a $N_2/O_2$ mixture gas in order to review $SF_6$ alternative. From AC discharge experiment in an quasi-uniform field, it was found that the optimal $N_2/O_2$ mixing ratio which breakdown voltage and surface flashover voltage were the highest was 70/30 and that the pressure dependence on the breakdown voltage was higher than that of the surface flashover voltage in the Dry $Air/O_2$ and the $N_2/O_2$ mixture gas. The mixing ratio (70/30) and the tendency of the pressure dependence were described in detail based on physical factors (impact ionization coefficient, electron attachment coefficient, secondary electron emission coefficient) involved in discharge mechanism and a electron source, respectively. In addition, the performance insulation and the economic feasibility of the Dry $Air/O_2$ and the $N_2/O_2$ mixture gas were discussed so that Dry $Air/O_2$ mixture gaswas more suitable than $N_2/O_2$ mixture gas to the $SF_6$ alternative.

It is very desirable that a mixture gas possessing excellent insulation performance is suggested for insulation on increasing high voltage. This paper proposes a SF<SUB>6</SUB> mixture gas based on the factors including dielectric strength, environmental impact and economic feasibility of manufacture for the insulation in eco-friendly power equipment. A suitable-SF<SUB>6</SUB> content was determined to improve the dielectric strength in N₂ and Dry Air. The examination results of the factors revealed that a SF<SUB>6</SUB>/Dry Air mixture gas possessing the SF<SUB>6</SUB> content was more appropriate than a SF<SUB>6</SUB>/N₂ mixture gas to the eco-friendly power equipment. In addition to the selection of the suitable SF<SUB>6</SUB> mixture gas, insulation characteristics as a function of SF<SUB>6</SUB> content were described from electron-detachment mechanism.

This study investigates the Horizontal surface discharge characteristics of solid insulators by varying their materials, and the dew-point of dry-air. The methodology of this study is that a quasi-uniform field is first applied to a test chamber. Then, the chamber is filled with dry-air as an insulation gas which pressure is varied from 1 to 6atm while applying an AC voltage to the chamber. The used solid insulators are teflon, polyethlene and polyurethane. As the dew-point is lower and the pressure of dry-air is higher, the flashover voltage of all solid insulators increases more. When each characteristic of the solid insulators is compared under the same gas pressure, the flashover voltage of teflon is the highest. Then, the flashover voltage of polyethlene is higher than that of polyurethane. Moreover, it is observed that the flashover voltage increases as the horizontal distance between the electrodes of each solid insulator become larger, respectively. However, as the pressure is increased, flashover voltage of the solid insulators is saturated. Therefore, selection of cost-effective insulation is needed in order to appropriate pressure.

This study was conducted to discover a substitute of SF<SUB>6</SUB> gas. SF<SUB>6 </SUB>gas is widely used across the industries. Thanks to superior electrical properties, in particular, it has been commonly used in electrical industry. However, there have been a lot of studies on its serious effect on global warming. As a substitute of this synthetic gas, a mixture of dry air and N₂/O₂ was chosen in this study. In case of N₂/O₂, dielectric strength differs depending on the mixing ratio. This study examined dielectric breakdown and flashover after adjusting oxygen percentage in the dry air. This test was conducted in a quasi-uniform electric field depending on pressure, oxygen concentration and gas mixtures. The test results found that dielectric voltage and flashover voltage were the highest at a certain oxygen concentration. It is the results of this photoionization and electron attachment of oxygen.
