        Background: Gluteus maximus major plays a primary role in extending the hip joint and plays an important role in performing various functions such as gait control and increase in stability of the sacroiliac joint. Although gluteus squeeze exercises show high electromyographic activity of the gluteus maximus and are convenient exercises that can be useful in daily life, research on gluteus squeeze is insufficient compared to other traditional gluteus maximus exercises. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between gluteus squeeze strength and gluteus maximus strength using a tensiometer and hand-held dynamometer. Methods: Twenty-two healthy adults (males 13, females 9) were enrolled in this study. The subject was trained to explain and familiarize with the measurement process in advance for 10 minutes before all measurements were made. First, the gluteus squeeze strength was measured through a tensiometer connected to the belt, and after the muscle strength of the gluteus maximus was measured in the manual muscle test posture using a hand-held dynamometer. Results: We found that the positive correlation between the gluteus squeeze strength and the gluteus maximus strength (right, r = 0.826, p < 0.001) (left, r = 0.830, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study suggested that gluteus squeeze exercise is effective to strengthen the gluteus maximus and the strength of gluteus maximus can be easily checked using a tensiometer in clinics.

        편측성 체중 부하 엉덩관절 벌림 운동 시 골반 움직임의 실시간 시각적 바이오피드백이 엉덩이 근육 활성화 및 몸통 측면 기울기에 미치는 영향

        Background The role of the gluteus medius muscle in walking or weight-bearing activities is important, and unilateral weight-bearing exercises are used as rehabilitation strengthening exercises. Compensatory movement such as trunk lateral tilt toward the weight-bearing side can occur; however, no studies have confirmed how controlling the pelvic movement affects trunk lateral tilt. Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of real-time visual biofeedback of pelvic movement on gluteal muscle activity and trunk lateral tilt during unilateral weight-bearing hip abduction exercise. Methods A total of 18 healthy adults were recruited for this study. During the unilateral weight-bearing hip abduction exercise with and without real-time visual biofeedback of the pelvic movement, gluteus medius muscle activity and trunk lateral tilt were measured. The trunk lateral tilt movements were analyzed using the Kinovea® program. Changes in gluteus medius muscle activity and trunk lateral tilt between unilateral weight-bearing hip abduction exercises with and without real-time visual biofeedback of pelvic movement were statistically analyzed using t-test. Results There was a significant increase in gluteus medius muscle activity and a significant decrease in trunk lateral tilt during exercise with real-time visual biofeedback compared to that without real-time visual biofeedback (p < 0.001). Conclusions Real-time visual biofeedback of pelvic movement during unilateral weight-bearing hip abduction exercise can effectively increase the muscle activity of the gluteus medius muscle by minimizing compensatory actions such as trunk lateral tilt.

        AB-슬라이드를 이용한 월슬라이드 운동이 앞톱니근과 위등세모근의 근활성도에 미치는 영향

        Background It is known that a wall slide exercise is required to strengthen the serratus anterior. However, overactivation of the upper trapezius during wall slide exercise reduces serratus anterior mus-cle activation. Currently, methods to strengthen the serratus anterior muscle during wall slide exercise are being studied. However, there is no study that wall slide exercise using AB-SLIDE the affects upper trapezius and serratus anterior muscle. Objectives The purpose of this study is to compare the upper trapezius and serratus anterior muscle activity between general wall slide exercise and wall slide exercise using AB-SLIDE. Methods A total of 15 healthy male volunteers were recruited for this study. With and without AB-SLIDE, muscle activity of the upper trapezius and serratus anterior was compared during the wall slide exercise. The electromyographic data of the upper trapezius and serratus anterior was measured using 4D-MT, 2EM. The difference between general wall slide and wall slide using AB-SLIDE was ana-lyzed using the paired t-test with p < 0.05 as a significant level. Results Compared to the general wall slide exercise the upper trapezius muscle activation was sig-nificantly decreased when wall slide exercise using AB-SLIDE(p < 0.05). Also, serratus anterior muscle activation was significantly increased when wall slide exercise using AB-SLIDE (p < 0.05). Conclusions In this study, compared to general wall slide exercise, the upper trapezius muscle activity was significantly decreased and serratus anterior muscle activity significantly increased when using AB-SLIDE. The result of this study can confirm the wall slide exercise using AB-SLIDE will be a useful way to increase the muscle activity of the serratus anterior.

        당당통합교정치료의 효과에 대한 연구

        Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Dang Dang integrated corrective therapy including myofascial release, chuna therapy, and exercise therapy on height, muscle mass, body fat, and body water in patients with body imbalance. The secondary aim was to investigate whether the percent of change in height, muscle mass, body fat, and body water varied by age group. Methods : In total, 279 patients with body imbalance between the ages of 10 and 79 were recruited at hospitals. All participants had Dang Dang integrated corrective therapy including myofascial release, chuna therapy, and exercise therapy. The patients’ height, muscle mass, body fat, and body water were measured before and after Dang Dang integrated corrective therapy using InBody. Results : The height, muscle mass, and body water significantly increased after Dang Dang integrated corrective therapy in all age groups except for the 70∼79 age group and body fat significantly decreased (p < .05). The age group comparison of the percent change in height, muscle mass, and body water showed significant differences (p < .05). In the post hoc test, the percent change of height in the 10∼19 age group was significantly greater than in the other age groups except for the 70∼79 age group. The percent change of muscle mass and body water in the 10∼19 age group was significantly greater than in the 30∼39 age group. Conclusion : These findings suggest that applying Dang Dang integrated corrective therapy to patients with body imbalance, excluding patients aged 70∼79, may be a useful method to increase height, muscle mass, and body water and decrease body fat through spinal and joint realignment. The best results were observed in teenagers.
