Cervical carcinoma of the uterus is the most common cancer of the Korean warren, but its early detection method is not popularized yet. Recent reports indicated human papillomavirus(HPV) as one of the major factors to the development of the cervical cancer. This study is performed to find out whether the epithelia of the uterine cervix were infected by HPV or not by using an in situ K:R method. None of the chronic nonspecific inflammation(CND case was positive for HPV. but 23.3% cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN) grade I were positive by immunohistochemistry. But the positive rates by in situ K:R were different: 76.2:``/0 in CNI cases and 56.7% in CIN grade I cases. The positive cases of more than one HPV subtypestmixed subtypes positive cases) which included a high risk group was 40 among the total 51 cases(80%) by in situ K:R method, This finding suggest that HPV positive cases have a possibility to progress to an early cancer. The roost significant finding in this study was that CNI cases showed a high positive rate for HPV by in situ K:R method This positive finding was usually detected in the koilocytes of cervical epithelium, although in 4 cases non-koilocytes were also positive, This study suggests that the DNA test for HPV should be carried for the early detection of the high-risk group of HPV infection. And these patients need follow-up study and regular examination; and these efforts would contribute to the reduction of the cervical cancers.
