        Effect of intratesticular injection of xylazine/ketamine combination on canine castration

        This study was performed to compare the effect of intratesticular (IT) injection of xylazine/ketamine combination for canine castration with those of intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection. Xylazine and ketamine was administered simultaneously via intratesticularly (IT group), intramuscularly (IM group) or intravenously (IV group) at doses of 2 and 10 mg/kg, respectively. Pain response at the time of injection, mean induction time, mean arousal time, mean walking time and cardiopulmonary function during anesthesia were monitored after the xylazine and ketamine administration. In IV and IM groups, heart rates were significantly decreased 30 and 45 min after xylazine and ketamine administration, respectively (p < 0.05). Respiratory rates were significantly decreased in the IV group (p < 0.05). In the IT group, there was no significant changes in heart and respiratory rates. The occurrence of cardiac arrhythmias was less severe in IT group compared with those in IM and IV groups. The route of administration did not affect rectal temperature. Mean induction time was significantly (p < 0.05) longer in IT group than in IM and IV groups. On the contrary, mean arousal time and mean walking time were shortened in IT group. Clinical signs related to pain response at the time of injection and vomiting were less observed in IT group than in IM group, and head shaking was less shown in IT group than in IM and IV groups during recovery period. These results indicated that intratesticular injection of xylazine/ketamine for castration has several advantages such as less inhibition of cardiopulmonary function and fast recovery from anesthesia without severe complications, and would be an effective anesthetic method for castration in small animal practice.

        개에서 발생한 요도하열 1례

        A six-month-old, male mongrel dog presented with wet ventral abdominal skin hairs and a short prepuce with penis. In physical examination, the penis was underdeveloped with fusion failure of the prepuce and the urethral opening was in the transitional area between os penis and perineal region. The radiological shape of urinary bladder was normal in positive contrast cystography and there was no any other routes except the observed urethral opening. Cryptochidism was also shown. It was diagnosed as hypospadia. Treatment included castration and resection of remnants of the prepuce and penis.

        Xylazine으로 진정시킨 개에서 Yohimbine의 정맥 및 피하주사의 길항효과

        This study was performed to compare the antagonistic effects of intravenous(0.125mg / kg) and subcutaneous(0.25mg /kg) administration of yohimbine on xylazine-induced immobilized(4.5mg/ kg) dog and to investigate the effectiveness of yohimbine compound(0.25mg / kg) in clinical practice. Mean arousal time(MAT), mean walk time(MWT), and time to return to normal electroencephalograms were remarkably decreased in all yohimbine-treated groups compared with the control. In electroencephalograms(A-B$\sub$I/ lead), there were no significant alteration, except RR interval. RR interval was decreased in all yohimbine-treated groups compared with the control. Second-degree heart blocks(41.7%) shown after xylazine administration disappeared within 2 min after yohimbine administration. The frequency of electroencephalograms(RO-RF trace) was recovered faster to normal in yohimbine-treated groups than that of the control. In histopathological changes of ICR mice given yohimbine compound subcutaneously, edema with inflammatory cells of hypodermis was slightly shown on the 1st day, but this findings were not observed on the 5th day. It was considered that no difference in the antagonistic effects of intravenous and subcutaneous administration of yohimbine on xylazine- induced immobilized dog were observed and yohimbine compound was usable in clinical practice for antagonistic agent to the xylazine.

        Malignant ocular melanoma in a dog

        A mongrel male dog of three years old was referred to the Seoul National University Veterinary Teaching Hospital following a one month history of glaucoma. On ophthalmic examination, hyphema, glaucoma, uveitis, iridal mass, and loss of vision were noted in the right eye. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a mass with involvement of the entire uvea. Radiographic evaluation did not reveal any evidence of distant metastasis. The right eye was surgically removed because of the high likelihood of neoplasia. A histologic diagnosis of malignant uveal melanoma was made.

        한국재래산양 코눈물관계통의 해부학적 및 방사선학적 연구

        This study was carried out to identify the gross anatomical and radiographic characteristics of the nasolacrimal system of the Korean native goat. The results were as follows : The nasolacrimal system are composed of two lacrimal ducts, two lacrimal, canaliculus, one lacrimal sac and one nasolacrimal duct. The nasolacrimal duct was divided into proximal, middle and distal portion. The nasolacrimal duct took a straight course to be paralleled with nasal bones and opened close to the nostril on the medial surface of the alar fold. The diameter of lacrimal punctum, the length of eyelid margin to lacrimal punctum, the length of canaliculus and the diameter of lacrimal sac were 0.82~0.90mm, 1.06~1.54mm, 5.65~6.30mm and 1.77~2.06mm, respectively. The length of proximal, middle and distal nasolacrimal duct were 36.84~40.00mm, 23.53~24.31mm and 14.55~14.73mm, respectively. The diameter of the orifice of nasolacrimal duct, the length of lateral margin of nostril to orifice of nasolacrimal duct and the length of dorsum to orifice of nasolacrimal duct were 1.29~1.33mm, 12.97~12.53mm and 15.24~16.11mm. The skull index of Korean native goat was not significantly different from the length of nasolacrimal duct.

        Tesr staining syndrome이 있는 poodle에서 눈물생산, 비루관 개통성 및 굴곡도

        This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of tear staining syndrome in poodle dogs. Schirmer tear test, fluorescein dye test and measurement of the angle of bend between vertical and horizontal bony nasolacrimal duct were conducted in both poodles and German shepherd dogs. There were no significant differences between normal and tear-stained poodles in tear formation determined by Schimer tear test. However, there was significantly higher tear production in German shepherds than that in normal poodles(p<0.05). In the fluorescein dye test for the measurement of tear excretion, the dye was observed within $14.5{\pm}6.5$ minutes after dropping of the dye in normal poodles, but was not observed even over 30 minutes in tear-stained poodles. German shepherds had rather rapid passage time($0.4{\pm}0.3$ minutes) than poodles in the dye excretion. In the measurement of the angle of bend between vertical and horizontal bony nasolacrimal duct through dacryocystorhinography, there were no significant differences between normal tear-stained poodles with showing $85.0{\pm}6.8^{\circ}$ and $89.8{\pm}6.5^{\circ}$, respectively. However, obtuse angle of bend($106.8{\pm}4.7^{\circ}$) was shown in German shepherds. These results have ascertained that tear staining syndrome of poodle dogs was not related to tear production but to the rate of tear excretion.

        Tear Staining Syndrome을 보이는 Poodle에 있어서 내안각의 세균총 및 눈물의 Lactoferrin 함량

        This study was performed to evaluate the effects of ocular bacteria and tear lactoferrin on the Tear Staining Syndrome(TSS) in poodle dogs. Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Micrococcus and Pseudomonas were the most Prevalent microorganisms isolated in normal eyes of poodle dogs, whereas the predominant isolates in the poodle dogs with TSS were Micrococcus, Staptococcus and Staphylococcus. There were no significant differences between the normal and tear-stained poodle dogs in the quantity of tear lactoferrin. In vitro hair staining experiment, bacteria isolated from the eyes with TSS and lactoferrin didn't stain hair. The results have shown that either ocular bacteria or tear lactoferrins were not related to the TSS.

        염소의 xylazine 진정(鎭靜)에 대한 전침자극(電針刺戟)의 길항효과(拮抗效果)

        This study was performed to investigate the reverse effects of Jen Chung electroacupuncture at 10 and 30 min after xylazine administration(0.1mg/kg) in goats. In the group of electroacupuncture at 30 min after xylazine administration, MAT and MWT were markedly shorter than in control and in 10 min after xylazine administration. The RR intervals were continuously increased in control and in the group of electroacupuncture at 10 min after xylazine administration, but in the group of electroacapuncture at 30 min after xylazine administration significantly reduced from about 45 min. The frequency(cps) of EEG was recovered to normal pattern after 90 min in the group of electroacupuncture at 30 min after xylazine administration, but considerably delayed in control and in the group of electroacupuncture at 10 min. Respiratory rates tended to be somewhat decreased and then gradually increased in all groups. In control, there were shown cycloapneustic respirations but no in the electroacupuncture groups. It was turned out to be that the electroacupuncture stimulation of Jen Chung at 30 min after xylazine administration was effective for the reverse of the xylazine analgesia.

        한국재래산양의 정상 안저도

        This study was performed to investigate the normal ocular fundus in 30 Korean native goats. The shape of two peaks of a mountain was shown in the tapetal fundus which was mostly greenish-blue color. The nontapetal fundus which was differentiated from the tapetal fundus, was generally a uniform shade with dark blue. The optic disc was nearly round and varied in color : orange, gray, tan and various combinations. It was mostly located at the junctional area of the nontapetal and the tapetal fundus. In the retinal vasculature, three or four major arterioles and two or three major venules emerged from the optic disc and the arterioles could be distinguished from the venules. The superior arteriole and venule in the tapetal fundus did not twist each other.
