At the meeting thermal and moisture absorption properties of Nylon 4,6 copolymer via melt polymerization will be discussed. Nylon 4,6 is obtained from Nylon 4,6 salt via melt polymerization, and is sold under trade name of “Stanyl”. It has excellent physical properties such as high stiffness, good toughness, and high thermal stability. However, it has poor melt processability due to its high melting point (~290 oC). Monomer of nylon 6, ε-caprolactam, was incorporated to tailor melting point and moisture absorption of nylon 4,6. Nylon 4,6/6 copolymerization with various mole ratios were carried out in a Parr reactor by melt polymerization. Their thermal and moisture absorption properties were interpreted in terms of physicochemical characteristics nylon 4,6/6 copolymers.

At the meeting thermal and moisture absorption properties of Nylon 4,6/6 copolymer by incorporating polar monomers capable of hydrogen bonding via melt polymerization will be discussed. Recently, we have developed nylon 4,6/6 copolymer with moisture absorption of 5.67% and melting point of 219°C. But nylon 4,6/6 copolymerizations with various molar ratios were limited to tailor melting point and improve moisture absorption. In this study, diamines having amine (-NH-) or oxygen(-O-) in which can form hydrogen bonding were incorporated to tailor melting point and moisture absorption of nylon 4,6/6 copolymer. Diamines include N,N`-Bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylene diamine, tetraethylenepentamine, diethylene glycol bis(3-aminopropyl)ether and 1,4-butanediol bis(3-aminopropyl)ether. Nylon 4,6/6 copolymer with small amount (~10%) of each nylon salt were synthesized. Their thermal and moisture absorption properties were interpreted in terms of physicochemical characteristics nylon 4,6/6 copolymers with nylon salts.
