In this paper, the high speed milling characteristics of Al6061 was studied. A gantry type milling & tapping center was developed for this study. The cutting force and the resulting surface roughness were measured at various cutting conditions. The experimental results indicate that the surface roughness is relative to the cutting conditions.

The resin bonded diamond wheel is used to grind the difficult-to-cut materials. Traditionally, the resin bonded diamond wheel is manufactured without any pores due to the characteristics of resin bond. In this study, two porous resin bonded diamond wheel were made and the grinding characteristics were compared with traditional nonporous ones. The experimental results indicate that the porous resin bond diamond wheel require less grinding forces and powers.

The existent cutting insert have occupied most product of grinding style, because it has a problem of accuracy and manufacturing process. The product has a concept but development is difficult, because grinding and manufacturing by press are impossible. But by development and stabilization of a technology, preference of non-ground insert increases gradually. And then insert that grinding is impossible is developed availably as non-ground product by using developed equipment and software. In this paper reports some experimental results on the machining performance of non-ground Cutting inserts. Three kinds of Cutting inserts were manufactured without using grinding process. Machining experiments were carried out to compare the machining performance of non-ground inserts with that of ground ones. The experimental results indicate that the cutting forces and tool wear and surface roughnesses of machined surface of both ground and non-ground inserts are comparable.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is used in various semiconductor processes because it has superior thermal, mechanical, and electrical characteristics as well as higher chemical and corrosion resistance than existing materials. Due to these characteristics, various manufacturing technologies have been developed for SiC. A recent development among these technologies is Chemical Vapor Deposition SiC (CVD-SiC). Many studies have been carried out on the processing and manufacturing of CVD-SiC due to its different material characteristics compared to existing materials like RB-SiC or Sintered-SiC. CVD-SiC is physically stable and has excellent chemical and corrosion resistance. However, there is a problem with increasing the thickness, because it is manufactured through a deposition process. Additionally, due to its high strength and hardness, it is difficult to subject to machining.

A plasma gas control apparatus for semiconductor plasma etching processes securely holds a cathode for forming a plasma, confines the plasma during the plasma etching process, and discharges gas after etching. It is a key part of the etching process. With the advancement of semiconductor technology, there is increasing interest in parts for semiconductor manufacturing that directly affect wafers. Accordingly, in order to replace the plasma gas control device with a CVD-SiC material superior in mechanical properties to existing SiCs (Sintered-SiC, RB-SiC), a study on the grinding characteristics of CVD-SiC was carried out. It is confirmed that the optimal grinding condition was obtained when the result table feed rate was 2 m/min and the infeed depth was 5 ㎛.

This paper reports some experimental results in high speed rigid tapping of magnesium alloy(AZ91D). M3 spiral tap and high speed spindle tapping center of gantry type were used in experiments and thrust forces were measured. The experimental results indicate that the thrust forces are proportional to the spindle speed and depth of cut. The thrust forces increase as the depth of cut increases. M3 Tapping was achieved at the spindle speed of 10,000rpm, depth of cut of 1.5D and total stroke of 32mm.

A Crankshaft multi grinding machine is developed for manufacturing of high precision crankshaft. The grinding head part of the developed machine should be moved precisely during grinding of work materials. In this paper, structural and modal analysis for the crankshaft multi grinding machine is carried out to check the design criteria of the machine. The analysis is carried out by FEM simulation using the commercial software. The machine is modeled by placing proper shell and solid finite elements. The results of structural and modal analysis confirmed that the structural characteristics of grinding machine and the structural safety are considered secure.

This paper reports some experimental results on the tool wears of non-ground cross hole type milling inserts. Six kinds of milling inserts were manufactured without using grinding process. Machining experiments were carried out to compare the tool wears of non-ground inserts with that of ground ones. The experimental results indicate that the tool wears of both ground and non-ground inserts are comparable.

Cathode is an essential component used in plasma etching process which is to make micro pattern on the silicon wafer. The currently used cathodes produce particles at the high temperature plasma etching process. To overcome this problem, a ‘Silicon Only Cathode’ was developed. This ‘Silicon Only Cathode’ requires manufacturing process changes due to the change of shapes, material features, and machining characteristics of work materials. This research investigates the small hole drilling process. The conclusion is that PCD drills with twist angles of 20? and 25? were tested for small hole drilling and the experimental results indicate that the drill with 25? twist angle drill causes less thrust force.
