        자연언어처리로서 영어의 수(數) 표현(表現)

        This paper dealt with English number expressions as natural language processing (NLP), analyzing word forms and constituentes in number expressions, the semantic interpretation of quantifier scope, and the textual reference. Thus, the results are shown as follows: First, the number expressions as NLP play an important role bothe for cognition of human beings and NLP itself, since they might reflect human mind world. Second, features of words in lexicography can contain a lot of information for NLP, while the co-occurrence restrictions in phrase level and the number agreement in clause level depend upon the modifiers and head-resolution, respectively. Third, the ambiguity of quantifier scope is one of the problems that we can not solve easily. The logics helps to solve the problems. However, it is insufficient because the logic symbol itself has a limitation of the interpretation of quantifier scope. Only does the logics give us a more explicit way to reduce the ambiguity of quantifier scope than others. Fourth, as for the reference, the relationship between reference and referent can be resloved by context. Since it is not easy to capture their relationship, we tried to catch the referent using thematic role and focus. They can be available to an extent at present. For the development of NLP, we can say, the modern NLP depends on new methodologies for the construction of computers, languages, and application programs. We may be confident in their ability to perform as intended by their designers in the future.

        인터넷을 활용한 외국어로서 영어글쓰기

        The Internet can be used as a useful educational tool for Koreans to use to teach writing in the English language. Excellent sources for learning and gaining experience would include: on-line, (cyber) universities, e-mail, chatt rooms, newsgroup, and other sites where the Internet users communicate each other. Since the Internet offers us access to a vast source of information on writing English, we need to find ways to use it effectively. Copyright laws cover most work in the English language on the Internet. Thus, it is important that the learner understands the fair use of this copyrighted material, information, and data in classroom work. Strict adherence to the standards of fair use of information, and continuous practice in writing English using those Internet venues or locations where people exchange information will certainly lead to better use of written English. In the future the Internet will certainly be available for Koreans who wish to learn or to improve their English writing. < Changwon College >

        초등학생의 영어 말하기를 위한 가정에서 열린교육

        Open education at home(O.E.H.) can be one of the ways to learn English as a second language. It will be useful for the schoolchildren to practice speaking English as a second language at home. This paper deals with the roles of parents, their open minds for speaking, and some models and strategies of English speaking at home. Since there is every likelihood that the speech act of schoolchildren is closely related to their parents, it might be important that the children have an opportunity to communicate their desire in English at home. At the beginning of speaking, they will speak some simple words: Mom, Dad, good morning, etc. And they will expand their sentences with more complex words and expressions. Finally, they may arrive at the highest level what it is called ‘the embedded sentences’ or ‘acquisition stage’ That level is one of our goals to acquire English. Although the O.E.H. can be predicted that the schoolchildren will get a good result for speaking English, it may have limits such as mispronunciation, misunderstanding, or misusing about the culture and linguistic information between LI and L2. So, it is necessary to get some data for the results of the experiment on the O.E.H. As for the experiement, however, this paper is in a position to leave it for the next study.

        영어 기수(基數) 듣기를 통한 인지와 언어활동에 관한 실험

        By listening to odd number expressions in English, non-English major junior college students are able to reveal certain relationships between the cognitive and the linguistic evidence of human brain activities. Even though it is not easy to make clear-cut between cognitive and linguistic domain, we can trace something important through several experiments about the number expressions. As to the big differences between cognitive and linguistic activities, we may think that the odd number expression is one of the important fields which we have to study about cognitive and linguistic abilities even though a few scholars are only making hypothesis about the two different kinds of domain. However importance it may be, if we don't try to find, it will be useless unless somebody does so. In this respect, this paper tries to trace the evidence of the activities by using odd number expressions. By examining the three hypotheses, we obtain the following results: 1) Environmental factors such as classroom and language lab are not major influence on acquiring English odd numbers. 2) To acfluire English odd numbers, the students use their unconsciousness knowledge, that is to say, acquisition, not learning. 3) To get the evidence on the difference between language activity and cognitive activity, we can use the English odd numbers by making the students listening to them. Though these experimental data have some limitations, such variables as social, personal, and environmental factors, the results can give us good strategies for distinguishing between linguistic and cognitive abilities.
