Vol.56 No.2

As a Newbery winner who writes historical fictions, Linda Sue Park turns her attention to different time periods in Korean history. Unfortunately, she has been sometimes criticized for distorting Korean history and culture due to her incorrect knowledge about Korea. Some critics suggest that she, as a serious writer who writes historical novels of Korea, should be more deliberate in dealing with Korean history. However, her historical novels provide various cultural experiences for readers and give them an opportunity of understanding other cultural people. Furthermore, she always tries to investigate the universal feelings and emotions of human beings in the works. It may, therefore, be appropriate to regard her as a Korean-American writer who writes historical novels, not as a Korean writer who writes about Korean history. (PaiChai University)

When Ulysses was published in 1922, Joyce had been widely considered as to derive inspiration from popular literary forms like the newspaper, the sentimental romance and pornography. I dare say that`s true. It, however, does not mean that he is a pornographic writer. On 6 December 1933 Judge Woolsey announced that Ulysses was not legally obscene and could, therefore, be admitted to the United States. As Woolsey had observed, although he had a lively interest in "pornographic writing," Joyce himself had no intention of stirring the sexual impulses or leading to sexually impure and lustful thoughts. Joyce`s early religiosity, along with the sexual repression that pervaded Irish society, left him with a deeply ambivalent relationship to his own sexuality. He was at the same time highly sexed and highly repressed owing to his repressive Irish Catholic education by Jesuits. Joyce, however, had a belief that sexual desire was a natural thing of human being and a pivotal experience to become a complete artist. The aesthetics of obscenity in Joyce`s works, therefore, has much to do with his writing technique. (Pai Chai University)

Vol.33 No.1

This paper is to examine the homosexual dilemma in Willa Cather’s My Ántonia. Willa Cather, as Sharon O’Brien suggested in her Willa Cather, was a lesbian author. As she lived in 19th century, she had to face the conflict between the traditional idea of what it was to be a woman and what it was to achieve. So Cather adopted the male persona, in My Ántonia, her most outstanding and mature work, as a way out of facing great anxiety. Her greatest love was Isabel McClung, whom she met in Pittsburgh in 1898. McClung’s sudden announcement, however, to marry the violinist Jan Hambourg made her first stunned and then depressed. During the troubled period when she felt abandoned by McClung, Cather was writing My Ántonia. Clearly, throughout the work, her deepest affections given to women are evidently hidden. As a woman and writer, Willa Cather was suffered from her homosexual dilemma. But she had to conceal her lesbianism in her social climate. I insist, therefore, that Cather should encode her lesbianism under the guise of male persona, Jim Burden, in My Ántonia. (Paichai University)

Vol.16 No.1

Was James Joyce a Catholic, or not? This question is not easy to answer because he had never expressed his position on the matter during his life. Joyce was taught to accept religious instruction and to fulfill the religious duties at Clongowes Wood College. He was sent to Belvedere College when he was 11 years old and after 2 years was elected director of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin. Joyce was, so to speak, immersed in a deeply religious atmosphere in his early school life. Despite this, he remained an object of suspicion to his Jesuit teachers. As a result, he had lost his faith of his boyhood on Catholicism when he grew up. Another factor in Joyce`s loss of faith was the strong anti-clericalism of his father when the Irish Catholic clergy spoke out against Parnell. And the other factor that drew him further away from the Catholic Church was his inclination to be subject to his own impulse. He wanted sex, and he thought that it was an essential experience to conduct "an experiment in living," as Stanislaus called it. And if he wanted to become a complete artist he had to complete his experience. By this time his faith was seriously in crisis. By rejecting the Church, he was free to develop a spirituality that was essence for an experienced artist. Joyce`s mood of religious conviction, in short, gave way to an increasing enthusiasm for modern literature. Though he had maintained an interest in the Church`s liturgy in his life, Joyce was not a faithful member of Catholic Church.

Vol.58 No.3

Henry James once observed that George Eliot would "remain the great novelist who has written the fewest short stories." She is, actually, regarded as one of the greatest novelist in the world and her novella, The Lifted Veil, is highly estimated as one of the most important stories. The novella reflects Eliot``s interest in the contemporary science in her Victorian age, especially in physiology, mesmerism, and phrenology and includes many important points and themes. Unlike her other stories, however, The Lifted Veil is told entirely from the perspective of one individual, the main character, Latimer. While the protagonist suggested that he wishes to use his last hours of ease and strength in telling the story of his experience, the narrator``s credibility of the novella should be called into question due to his lack of honesty. As George Eliot herself suggested in Impressions of Theophrastus Such, "it is not possible to describe oneself at once faithfully and fully." Given the lack of confidence in the events of the narrative by the narrator, it is necessary to have critical thinking in examining the novella and analysing narrative form.

Vol.34 No.2

James Joyce’s theory of art is mainly presented in the form of dialogue between Stephen Dedalus and other characters in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The theory is very important because it throws a bright light on the structure and themes of the work. Stephen refers to Aristotle and to St. Thomas Aquinas for the basis of his own theory, though he takes what he wants, shapes it to his own ends. In his aesthetic formulation, Joyce particularly borrows from Aquinas the terms for three aspects of beauty: Integritas, Consonantia, and Claritas. The three forms of art he makes distinction in his work are the lyrical, the epical and the dramatic. The generic distinctions he makes are perhaps an echo of Hegel, though he never mentions him anywhere. Fundamental to an appreciation of Joyce’s theory is to understand the concept of the epiphany and its use. As defined by Stephen and used by Joyce, the epiphany is a privileged moment of perception. It includes the themes of time, truth, morality and art. As a result, Joyce’s literary theory is very important not only to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man but to all of his works.

Vol.26 No.11

As global warming in recent years has raised ever more critical concern, refrigerants with high global warming potentials (GWP) are facing the challenge of being phased out. R410A, with a GWP of 2,088, has been widely used in residential air-conditioning and heat pump systems. A potential substitute for R410A is R32, which has a GWP of 675. The present study presents experimental results of an inverter heat pump system that uses R32 as an alternative refrigerant to R410A. Drop-in tests with R32 indicated that the energy efficiency ratio of the system increased by 5.3% in cooling standard mode, and by 4.2% in heating standard mode at the same capacity; and that the cooling and heating capacity increased by about 12% at the same compressor operating frequency, while the annual performance factor (APF) of the system increased by 5.3%.
