Electrodialysis (ED) is desalination process in which an ion exchange membrane (IEM) capable of selectively transmitting ions is alternately disposed and then desalinated or concentrated using electrical energy. In the IEM of ED, an ion concentration gradient is formed due to different ion transporting, and thus the efficiency of desalination is degraded. Recently, research has been conducted to improve ion transport by changing the property of the membrane surface to increase efficiency. On this paper, conducted an experiment to visualize the electroconvection (EC) on the surface of IEM having different ratio of conductive and non-conductive patterns on the IEM in real time and confirm the difference in performance at the overlimiting current.
