Planetary gear train is more compact in form and endures larger transmission power than other gear systems. The usability is increased in that the mesh is full and constant, and thus it is necessary to study for the design of planetary gear train. In this paper, we have developed the planetary gear train design system which determines gear dimensions such as module, teeth number, helix angle, facewidth, profile modification coefficients. The dimensions is calculated by using optimization technique to minimize the volume of the gear train and satisfy design constraints which include gear strength, interference, etc.

The engineering process including design, analysis/evaluation and manufacturing activities is becoming one of the key issues to embody a concurrent engineering concept. This paper proposes a framework to integrated the complicated engineering design and manufacturing processes under the concurrent engineering environment. The framework offers the following facilities: (1) to represent the complicated engineering process (2) to coordinate design activities and execute the process in a distributed environment (3) to support a communication among the related engineers. The engineering processes is depicted using process flow graphs that consist in tasks and the corresponding input and output data. The engineering activities in the defined processes can be executed in a distributed environment through process controller of the framework. Engineers can communicate to suggest their opinions and to exchange product information in the framework. We have conformed the CORBA standard to integrate various distributed engineering the and communicate among them, and used a Java to support the platform independent environment on the Internet. Since the proposed framework an be a formal approach to integrate the engineering processes by providing formalism, parallelism, reusability, and flexibility, it can be effectively applied to embody the concurrent engineering concept in a distributed environment.

The vibration and noise of gears is due to the vibrational exciting force caused by the tooth stiffness which changes periodically as the mesh of teeth proceeds and by the transmission error, that is, the rotation delay between driving gear and driven gear caused by manufacturing error and alignment error in assembly and so on. The vibrational exciting force between ring gear and planet gear is smaller than that between sun gear and planet gear in the planetary gear train with the thin-rimmed gear. The purpose of this study is to develop how to calculate the optimum amounts of tooth profile modification, by minimizing the vibrational exciting force of sun-planet gears. The proposed method can calculate the optimum amounts of tooth profile modification automatically and is to be utilized to resolve the problem of vibration of planetary gear tarin.<br/>
