It is necessary to develop various core components for robots according to the upward trends of robot business in many fields. Especially sensors are essential to robot applications and sensor network and sensors become modular for the sake of conveniency and efficiency. In this paper, we developed a low cost sensor module which has multiport analog inputs, digital inputs, and digital outputs using I2C communication. We designed the procedures of I2C communication for extensible stand-alone sensor module and its functions. The software of the sensor module was developed using LabVIEW. It has smaller response time than existing commercial products and has good performance in acquiring analog sensor data. Two or more sensor modules can be used being connected and the developed sensor module is expected to be used in various robot applications and sensor network.

The computer science major has been in a downward cycle in the US and the percentage of men intending to major in computer science is no worse than the mid-1990s. Many industry leaders in the US fear that the continuation of these trends will precipitate a workforce shortage in high technology fields, causing the United States to lose its technological edge. Some universities have studied on development of hardware, software, and curriculum to engage a student in engineering, science and math education sponsored by some major companies. In this paper, to find the solution to activate our engineering education, we survey educational trends and effort of US computer science using personal robots around the works of IPRE(Institute of Personal Robot Education) which is a joint institute between Georgia Tech and Bryn Mawr College sponsored by Microsoft Research.
