Since national GHG reduction target by 2020 has been presented in Korea the role of railroad has been reinforced within transport system due to the allocation of reduction target into sector. So it is necessary to manage activity data systematically for the calculation of GHG emission in railroad. Now the activity data of diesel consumption for NIR(National Inventory Report) are provided from oil supply and demand statistics. On the other hands the activity data collected directly from railroad operating companies are used for GHG & Energy Target Management Act. This study aimed to assess the GHG emissions using two kinds of activity data related to the diesel consumption of railroad in 2009 and 2010. As a result GHG emissions based on oil supply and demand statistics was 636 thousands ton CO2e but the activity data collected from railroad operating companies showed 649 thousands ton CO2e in 2009. Also the gap of CO2e emission was increased in 2010. These trends were caused because oil supply and demand statistics included total diesel sales volume during 1 year and the activity data collected from railroad operating companies were the amount of diesel consumption only at railcar operation and maintenance step. In conclusion it is important to develop the management and verification system of activity data with high reliability to substitute oil supply and demand statistics in railroad sector.

Since Kyoto protocol has become effective in 2005, the emission of CO₂ has been a main environmental issue. It is released about 20 % of CO₂ from transportation in total. Until now, railway has been known as an environmental-friendly transportation. However, substantial CO₂ is exhausted because diesel oil and electricity are consumed as energy sources. In this study, the emission of CO₂ was investigated in Korean railway. In 2004, total CO₂ emission from rolling stocks was about 1.44 million ton, which increased 3 % annually in comparison with 1990. In the future, it will be necessary to enhance energy efficiency and to save energy sources for the reduction of CO₂.

As the preservation law of soil environment has reinforced, several soil remediation projects have been performing for railroad sites. One of the main sources of soil contamination is the leakage of diesel from locomotives or underground storage tank. Also, the lubricant used to maintain turnouts causes railroad soil contamination. The purpose of this study was to develop the analysis and the remediation method for lubricant-contaminated soil. The lubricant in the contaminated soil was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) and GC (Gas Chromatography), respectively. The organic pollutants were removed from the soil using microorganisms degrading lubricant. Hereafter it will be necessary to apply this bioremediation method in the railroad field.

In Korea, various efforts to cope with the Post-Kyoto system have been recently performed because a duty for the GHG(Greenhouse Gas) reduction may be allocated from 2013. Especially, the role of railroad has been strengthened to decrease total GHG emission of transportation system. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the GHG emission and the reduction strategies of railroad. The purpose of this study was to develop the calculation method of GHG emission released from railroad. Main source of GHG emission was the energy consumption of railroad vehicle and infrastructure. Based on the emission factor and the equation reported in IPCC 2006 guideline, the total GHG emission of railroad was about 1.4 million tons CO2e in 2007. Using this calculation method, the GHG data of railroad can be calculated quantitatively and managed systematically in the future.

Recently, the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) is the most important international issue. In order to control efficiently GHG emissions and reduction, it is essential to establish GHG inventory preferentially. The aim of this study was to establish the GHG inventory of Korean railroad. The GHG sources were divided into direct and indirect emissions. The GHG released from the operation of rolling stocks was classified according to operating line and the kind of car. Finally, the GHG emission of Korean railroad can be managed systematically using this GHG inventory.

Due to sustainable development, international environmental regulations have been reinforced continuously. Especially, Kyoto protocol related to energy consumption affects to national production system seriously. Even if railroad is the most environmental- friendly transportation, it is necessary to improve its environment. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a representative tool to evaluate the environment impacts of a product. In the EU"s railroad companies, the recycling efficiency and the waste emissions of rolling stocks have improved considering their environment impacts with LCA from a design step. Also, the LCA system of Korean electric motor units has been developed to build an environmentally sound railroad as one of national transportation core technology R&D projects. Therefore, the introduction of LCA will be required to decrease environmental impacts released from rolling stocks in the future.
