Coastal area in Songdo is under the reclamation to be developed as an artificial echo-friendly city. The time series of suspended sediment concentration was measured for 23 days at a station in a main channel around Songdo on the west coast of Korea via turbidity. Sediment at the site is a mixture of mud and sand. The measured time-series of suspended sediment concentration at the site displays two dominant oscillation patterns: fortnight period oscillation and semi-diurnal period oscillation. The suspended sediment concentration is separated into three components, i.e. a base concentration as wash load, a fortnight period oscillation component of the fine sediment, and a semi-diurnal period oscillation component of the coarse sediment. Accurate settling velocities, critical erosion shear stresses and erosion rate coefficients at the site were computed from empirical equations. The model was applied to the site by involving two representative sediment sizes, sand and mud, and computed time-series of suspended sediment concentration agrees well with measurements. The model system was applied to the site for prediction of sediment transport and bathymetric change due to the development project, and the prediction results include that some zones may be eroded after the reclamation.
