        초등학생 영어 성취도에 영향을 미치는 요인분석연구

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the achievement level of young learners of English as a foreign language and factors, such as language learning intelligence, learning styles, learning strategies, and the starting age of learning English. The sample group for this study consisted of 684 EFL learners from four elementary schools located in Seoul and Kyung-ki Province. A background questionnaire, a language learning intelligence questionnaire, a learning style questionnaire, and a strategies inventory of language learning (SILL) were used to collect data. The collected data were used to provide a descriptive and correlational analysis to address the research questions. The results showed that the achievement levels of young learners are significantly correlated with learning strategies and intelligence. The students` level of achievement had low correlation with the starting age of learning English. There was no correlation between the achievement level and learning styles. In addition, confirmatory factor analysis was run to perform a factor analysis of the data. The results revealed that there ware mediator effects of learning strategies in the relationship between the intelligences of language learning and students` level of proficiency. This result showed that teaching learning strategies would be more important for students than learning English at an early age.

        한국 EFL 교실에서 CMC를 활용한 과제수행에 나타나는 의미협상 유형 분석

        의미협상이 제2 언어 습득에 미치는 영향에 대하여 많은 연구가 이루어져왔다. 특히 과제의 유형과 의미협상의 상관관계에 관한 연구는 많은 주의를 이끌어 왔다. 그러나 컴퓨터 매개 의사소통 환경 내에서 과제의 유형과 의미 협상간의 관계에 대하여 영어를 외국어로 배우는 학습자들에 관한 연구한 논문은 적은 편이며 특히 통계적으로 검증한 논문은 거의 없는 편이다. 본 논문의 목적은 컴퓨터 매개 의사소통환경에서 과제의 유형이 의미협상에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지를 살펴보고, 교실상황에서 그 시사점을 찾아보는 것에 있다. 대학에 재학중인 18명의 EFL 학습자를 대상으로 네이트 채팅프로그램을 사용하여 4가지 유형 총 8개의 과제를 수행한 채팅기록을 분석한 결과, 학습자들은 의사소통에 문제가 생길 때 의미협상을 하고 있었으며, 가장 많은 의미협상이 일어난 과제는 의사결정을 하는 과제였으며, 토론, 그림순서 맞추기 그리고 정보 차 교환으로 나타났다. 그러나 의미 협상의 비율은 이전의 다른 연구에서 나타난 것보다 낮았으며, 질적 연구 방법을 사용하여 그 이유를 추정해 보았다. 본 연구의 결과는 과제의 구성이 언어 교실에 있어서 중요하다는 사실을 입증하였으며, 따라서 교수 상황에서 본 연구 결과가 시사하는 바가 크다고 할 수 있다. The purpose of this study is to examine task-based, synchronous computer- mediated communication among EFL learners in Korea. The research questions are how learners engage in negotiation of meaning when a communication problem arises, and whether the task type affects the negotiation of meaning. Eighteen students from a college English class were asked to carry out two sets of four different types of tasks in dyads using a chat program. The results show that students do negotiate meaning when non-understanding occurs, though the negotiation rates are lower than those reported from previous studies(Peterson, 2006; Smith, 2003). The greatest number of negotiation turns occurred in the decision making tasks, followed by discussion, picture sequence, and grammar-based tasks. The statistical analysis results show that the task type affects the amount of negotiation.

        CALL 분야의 효과성 연구에 관한 고찰

        This study surveyed 75 CALL effectiveness research papers published in major journals in Korea for past 5 years. Each research paper was classified according to 7 categories: Research design used, educational setting, number of participants, term of a study, technology used, language taught, and language skill or area taught. The results showed that there were more non-experimental studies than experimental studies, investigations in tertiary settings dominated the field, and the technologies used were largely web-related ones. This study looked at both strengths and weaknesses in this body of work and revealed a positive trend towards combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Recommendations for future research were offered.

        과제 관여도와 학습자의 영어능숙도가 영어어휘 학습에 미치는 효과

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of task-induced involvement and learners' English proficiency on English vocabulary learning. A total of 79 low proficient students from university A and 47 high proficient students from university B were randomly assigned to three different subgroups and asked to complete three different types of vocabulary tasks respectively. The three tasks varied in terms of involvement: reading comprehension, reading comprehension plus fill-in-the-blanks, and sentence writing tasks. Ten target words, in the form of nonsense words were created and replaced ten English words in two reading texts. The time on tasks was controlled in 20 minutes. After completing these tasks, students took immediate receptive and productive post tests. Two weeks later, they took delayed receptive and productive post tests. The results showed that as for low proficient learners, there were no significant differences between the scores of the three groups in immediate productive post-tests and delayed receptive and productive post-tests. Differences were revealed only in the immediate receptive post-test. However, with respect to the high proficient learners, there were significant differences between all four measures. The results also showed a significant interaction between task types and learners' proficiencies in immediate productive post-test and delayed receptive and productive post-test. The result of this study did not confirm involvement load hypothesis in the low proficient group. This study suggests that designing tasks for better vocabulary learning should be considered for lower proficient learners.

        웹 게시판을 활용한 영어 수업에 영향을 미치는 요인분석 연구

        ??The development and use of computer mediated communications (CMC) as a tool for teaching and learning English has grown considerably in recent years. The purpose of this study is to investigate factors related to learners’ participation, achievement, and satisfaction in EFL classes using web-based bulletin boards. The total number of 77 university students participated in this study. Three domains and eight independent variables investigated in this study were a learner-related domain (attitudes toward CMC, intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, attitudes toward writing), an interaction-related domain (student-student interaction, teacher-student interaction), and an environmental domain (physical support and design of the web site). In order to determine interrelation of variables correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used. The results of this study showed that the factors predicting a learner’s participation were instrumental motivation, attitudes toward writing, and teacher-student interaction. The factors explaining a learner’s achievement were learner’s participation and attitudes toward writing, and the factors predicting a learner’s satisfaction were integrative motivation, student-student interaction, teacherstudent interaction, physical support and learner’s participation.

        교사연수를 위한 개방형 학습 플랫폼의 설계, 시행, 평가

        The purpose of this study is to suggest design principles of open learning platform (OLP) for teacher training based on findings driven by design-based research (DBR, Reeves 2006). SMART Teaching 3.0 (Kim, Kim, Lee, & Lee, 2016) has been designed, implemented and evaluated as a self-directed learning program for English teachers in this study. Various types of context-rich data from 149 participant teachers, such as user statistics, teacher weekly journals, interviews, and post-survey were collected, analyzed, and triangulated. Findings throughout two teacher training implementations yielded six design principles in developing an OLP that adapts a new teacher training model: 1) sufficient open contents, 2) interface considering both PC and mobile learning environment, 3) purpose-driven online interaction space, 4) short and needs-satisfying contents such as observations of teachers’ lesson, 5) technical supports for individual learning and scaffolding, and 6) utilization of OLP for multi-purpose which are informal learning with individual learners; non-formal learning in community of practice; and formal learning as a supplement of officially certified teacher training program. It is hoped that the design principles and application process be referred for reforming teacher training program and future studies.
