This is a case report about rape poisoning in a Hanwoo. Non-protein nitrogen (NPN) compound in rape may cause poisoning in domestic animals. Rape poisoned cattle may show big and rapid breath with opening its mouth, edema and erosion of skin with itching, drooling, dyspnea and indigestion. Besides there can be shown neurological (blindness) and urological (red water) symptoms in some cases. There is no effective therapy for rape poisoning, therefore stopping the rape supplying is basically important. Clinical symptoms and history taking are very important factors in diagnosis of rape poisoning, due to the absence of diagnostic standard of judgment for rape poisoning. A Hanwoo 38 months old cow, in a farm located in Gyeoungbuk province showed typical rape poisoning symptoms such as breath with opening its mouth, drooling, dyspnea and hyperphotosensitivity, and dramatical recovery were occurred after stopping supplying of rape. The cow were diagnosed as the rape poisoning based on observation of clinical symptoms and history taking.

The dermatophytes was isolated from skin of the 175 healthy dogs and 22 dogs with pathological skin lesions at Pohang and Kyong.ju. The isolates were identified by the morphological appearance after cultivation and lactophenol cotton blue staining. 1. The isolation rates of dermatophytes were 8.5%(15/175) in dog with healthy skin and 27°/c (6/22) in dogs with pathological skin lesions. 2. From asymptomatic dogs, the isolation rates of dermatophytes in female dogs were higher than those in male dogs and those in young dogs were higher than those in old dogs. 3. Isolation rates of microsporum canis and trichophyton spp from asymtomatic dogs were 14 (93%) and 1(6.7%), respectively. 4. The causative agents of 6 dogs with dermatophytosis were identified as all M ccnis.

Prevalence of infectious agents, including Brucella abortus (BA), Mycobacterium bovis (MB), bovine leukemia virus (BLV), M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MP), Neospora caninum (NC) and Toxoplasma gondii (TG), was investigated in all the cattle raised in Ulleung island during 2007∼ 2010. For BA, the prevalences in head and farm were 8.1% (44/545) and 5.5% (4/73) in 2007, all negative in 2008∼2009, and 0.5% (4/774) and 1.7% (1/58) in 2010, respectively. For MB, no sample was positive by PPD or ELISA in 2007∼2010. For BLV and MP, no sample was positive by ELISA in 2007∼2009. For NC, seroprevalences in head and farm were 0.2% (1/545) and 1.4% (1/73), respectively, in 2007 and all negative in 2008∼2009. For TG, seroprevalences in head and farm were 17.6% (97/552) and 54.8% (34/62) by ELISA in 2009. By regions, the seroprevalences of TG in Ulleung-eup, Seo-myeon and Buk-myeon were 26.0%, 9.8% and 16.7%, respectively, which had significant differences (P<0.0001). Tiger cattle were more resistant to TG infection than Hanwoo. The seroprevalence of TG in summer was higher than in autumn. The seroprevalence of TG in cows was higher than in oxen. The seroprevalence of TG in cattle was increased with age. In conclusion, this study indicates that the prevalences of six infectious diseases, except for TG which are widely spread, are relatively low in cattle reared in Ulleung island.
PCR을 이용한 경북 동부지역 소의 러시아범안열원충 감염률 조사

This study was performed to determine the prevalence of Theileria sergenti (T. sergenti) in cattle reared in eastern areas of Gyeongbuk province by PCR. Among 443 samples collected from 42 cattle farms, 96 (21.7%) samples from 13 (31.0%) farms were positive for T. sergenti. By regions, 87 (26.6%) out of 327 cattle in Gyeongju, 8 (9.5%) out of 84 cattle in Pohang, and 1 (3.1%) out of 32 cattle in Ulleung were positive for T. sergenti. T. sergenti infection in dairy cattle (27.9%) was significantly higher than that in Korean cattle (9.4%, P<0.0001). Accordingly, Korean cattle were more resistant to T. sergenti infection. Prevalence of T. sergenti in cattle was increased with age (P <0.0001). The infection rate in cows (23.3%) was significantly higher than that in bulls (5.0%, P <0.01). Seasonally, prevalence of T. sergenti in cattle was highest in autumn (32.7%, P<0.01). Prevalence of T. sergenti in grazing cattle (66.7%) was significantly higher than that in non-grazing cattle (15.8%, P<0.0001). Since prevalence of T. sergenti infection is high in cattle reared in eastern areas of Gyeongbuk province, survey on other hemoparasites and appropriate control programs need to be established in this region.
