『지깐까 근교 농가의 야회』에 실린 이야기에는 현실세계와 동떨어진 악마와 유령 등이 등장한다. 일부 비평가들이 이 작품집을 우크라이나 민담과 전설을 토대로 집필한 초기 사실주의 작품으로 간주했지만, 기삐우스는 고골이 모친에게 쓴 편지를 근거로 그가 우크라이나 풍습, 민담, 생활양식, 민속의식 등에 관심이 없었다는 점을 지적하며 이 작품집에 사실주의 요소가 부재하다는 것을 주장한다. 그리고 구꼽스끼와 예레미나도 이 작품집에서 우크라이나의 민속요소를 찾아내는 것은 불가능하다는 주장을 펼쳤다. 독일을 포함한 유럽의 낭만주의문학이 러시아문단에 영향을 끼치던 1820년대 말부터 집필하기 시작했다는 점을 고려할 때 고골이 낭만주의 영향을 받고 쓴 작품이라는 것을 부인하기에는 무리가 있다. 연구자는 낭만주의 관점에서 『소로친스까야 정기시장』을 고골의 ‘우크라이나 이야기들’과 비교하며 줄거리 중심으로 텍스트 분석을 시도했다. 언어의 마법사로 불리는 고골의 작품은 텍스트 분석을 통해서만 작가의 의도를 파악할 수 있기에 텍스트 자체가 중요한 역할을 한다. 하찮은 단어들조차 뒤집어보고 뒤틀어보고 곱씹어볼 때 고골이 의도하는 바를 파악할 수 있다. 그 결과 작가의 성담론과 환상적 낭만주의 특징인 초자연, 비현실, 불합리, 그로테스크, 그리고 악마의 출현 등이 이 작품에서 큰 역할을 하고 있다는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 특히 민간전설로 착각하게 만드는 ‘빨간색 스비뜨까 이야기’는 줄거리 진행의 긴장감을 불러일으키며, 악마를 상징하는 스비뜨까와 정체불명의 집시 출현은 ‘액자 식 구성’을 통해 독자에게 호기심과 긴장감을 증폭시키는 역할을 하고 있다. 주인공 체레비끄의 내면에 존재하는 근친상간 주제와 자연의 성애묘사를 통해 외형과 내면의 실체가 상이하다는 고골 문학관도 찾아낼 수 있었다. The purpose of this paper is to draw out the characteristics of Gogol’s fantastic Romanticism and literary devices which were reflected and manipulated in Sorochinskaja jarmarka through the careful textual analysis upon the base of the story. Some critics of the 19<sup>th</sup> and 20<sup>th</sup> century have insisted that it is hard to find out any evidence of the Ukrainian folklore characteristic in Sorochinskaja jarmarka. Especially V. Gippius, G. Gukovskij, and V. Eremina have insisted that main theme of this work was built by Gogol’s own imagination or from his subconscious. Through out the careful textual inspection, many literary characteristics and themes were found such as the supernaural, unrealities, absurd, grotesque, demonic appearance, and so on. Especially Gogol’s erotic depictions of the nature scenes display that the physical appearance of the objects as well as human-beings is quite far from the real substantialities. In this work Gogol has created his own artistic original peculiarities which contains a unique narrative structure, metaphors, symbols, etc. In Gogolian world the precise examination of the text including a single word is the most important factor among others. Then we could closer approach to the real Gogolian world.

1835년 출간한 『미르고로드』에 실린 『비이』는 단순한 플롯으로 구성되어 있다. 19세기부터 지속되고 있는 『비이』에 관한 연구와 분석은 현재진행 중이라고 말할 수 있는데, 아마도이 작품에는 고골의 난해한 문학세계의 매력적인 독특한 특징이 내재되어 있기 때문일 것이다. 본 연구에서는 난해한 고골 문학세계에 담겨져 있는 다양한 특징을 밝히기 위해 작품의 줄거리를 중심으로 텍스트를 심도 있게 분석했다. 그 결과 현실세계와 환상세계의 공존과 경계 허물기, 신화와 민간전설 테마, 비이의 의미, 마녀와 요괴, 변태성애, 호기심과 공포, 탐욕과 죽음, 속물성, 역설적 상징 그리고 사실적 묘사 등을 발견할 수 있었다. 단순한 플롯을 가지고 신화와 민간전설 테마를 활용하여 현실과 환상, 두 세계의 유동을 시도한 『비이』는 환상문학의 묘미를 느끼게 만드는 걸작이다. 예측할 수 없는 방향으로 진행되는 수수께끼 같은 줄거리와 텍스트는 작품 분석에 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 언어의 마법사인 고골의 작품은 원서를 통해서만 작가의 의도와 상징을 파악할 수 있기에 텍스트 자체가 매우 중요한 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있다. 텍스트의 하찮은 단어들조차 뒤집어보고 뒤틀어보고 곱씹어볼 때 고골이 의도하는 바를 파악할 수 있는 것이다. The purpose of this paper is to draw out the literary characteristics and devices which were reflected in Vij through the careful textual analysis upon the base of the story. Many critics of the 19th and 20th century have insisted that it is hard to discover any evidence of the Ukrainian folklore characteristic in Vij. Especially Leon Stillman and Simon Karlinsky have declared that the Vij is not a creature in any Ukrainian folklore but the creature built by Gogol’s own imagination or from his subconscious. Through the careful textual inspection, many literary characteristics and themes were found such as the coexistence of real world and fantastic world, the connection with general myth and folklores, the meaning of Vij’s name, witch and monsters, curiosity and fear, lust and death, banality, reversed symbol, realistic description etc. It is clear that Vij is the prominent original creation which contains the beauty of Fantastic literature. In this work Gogol has created his own artistic original peculiarities which contains a unique narrative structure, metaphors, symbols, etc. Moreover several symbols and imageries could be found such as sexual imagery which have been transformed into the mysterious form. In Gogolian world the precise examination of the text including a single word is the most important factor among others. Then we could closer approach to the real Gogolian world.
