한국 지방 대학 유학생의 노동 경험 연구: A 대학 베트남, 몽골 유학생을 중심으로

국내 대학의 유학생 수가 확대됨에 따라 학업을 수행하며 노동 시장에서 일하고 있는 유학생의 수 역시 증가하고 있다. 이 연구는 유학생의 학업 중 노동에 초점을 맞춰 학업 중 노동 가능성이 유학 선택에 미치는 영향을 밝히고, 학업과 노동을 병행하는 과정에서 그 균형이 유지 혹은 붕괴되는 데 영향을 미치는 사회적 조건들을 밝히는데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 경상북도 경산시에 위치한 사립대학인 A에 재학 중이거나 졸업한 베트남과 몽골 출신 유학생 17명에 대한 면담 조사를 실시하였다. 면담 조사 분석 결과, 지방 대학이 주는 상대적으로 풍부한 장학금 혜택과 낮은 생활비 등의 학력적, 경제적 조건이 한국어·한국 문화 습득을 통한 취업 성공이라는 학생들의 욕망과 결합하는 과정에서 시간제 노동의 가능성이 한국 유학을 현실화시키는 조건으로 작동한다는 점을 밝힌다. 또한 한국대학에서 학업과 노동을 병행하는 방식을 분석하여 한국어 실력과 대학 근처 양질의 서비스 직종으로의 접근 가능성 여부가 학업과 노동의 (불)균형 상태를 만들어낸다는 것을 드러낸다. 마지막으로 유학생이 자신의 노동 경험을 이해하는 방식을 살펴 학업과 노동의 불균형을 경험하는 경우라 할지라도 현재의 노동에 ‘배움’의 의미를 부여하며 극복해 나가고자 한다는 점을 강조한다. As the number of international students increases, the number of students joining the labor market during the semesters has risen correspondingly. This study aims to explore how the possible availability of part-time work influences international students’ decision-making in choosing which country and university to study in. In addition, by examining the part-time work experiences of international students after they join a university, this study investigates how they strike a balance between study and labor, whether it is maintained or it collapses. This study also analyzes how international students interpret their work experience in different ways. Through in-depth interviews with 17 Vietnamese and Mongolian students at a university located in Kyungsangbuk-do, South Korea, this study reveals that the possibility of part-time work plays a significant role as it actualizes and maximizes the benefits of studying abroad at Korean universities. Furthermore, highlighting the working experiences of the Vietnamese and Mongolian students reveals that students’ Korean language proficiency (i.e., TOPIK score) and their ability to access relatively decent part-time jobs near the campus are key to determining whether their work-study balance can be maintained. Lastly, this study reveals that even though international students face extreme hardships in their part-time jobs, they try to imbue the meaning of “learning” in their activities in order to overcome the difficulties they encounter.

경쟁의 유예, 불안하다는 감각: 필리핀 대학을 선택한 조기 유학 청년의 부동성 연구

Based on the in-depth interviews with Korean early study abroad (ESA) students who eventually choose to enter the Philippine universities, this paper examines driving forces for them to stay in the Philippines and the dilemmas that such immobility creates. Given that previous studies on ESA students in the Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines tend to emphasize that the students and their families desire to emigrate to the Western countries and /or return to Korea for entering prestigious universities, the students enrolling in the Philippine universities can be perceived as a result of the ‘failure of ESA’. Focusing on affect and emotion, this study reveals that Korean students intend to stay in the Philippines not only because it is a relaxed and comfortable place, but also because they can accumulate a specific form of sociocultural capital that could be the stepping stone to move across the globe. Comparing the affective responses to the students in the Philippines feel toward Korea, this study analyzes how their decision is specifically made. In addtion, this paper elucidates the effect of immobility as well as the decision-making process, to argue that the decision to stay in a ‘relaxed and comfortable place’ inevitably results in affective dilemmas, such as a sense of insecurity over comfort.

가짜 유학생 담론과 한국 대학 학위의 가치: 몽골 출신 유학생의 졸업 후 삶을 통해 본 한국 유학 산업의 딜레마

이 글은 한국 대학을 졸업한 몽골 유학생의 졸업 이후 삶에 관한 연구로, 한국에서 유학한 자들 가운데 공부를 하지 않고 돈을 벌다 온 ‘가짜’ 유학생이 있다는 담론이 몽골에서 어떻게 만들어지는지 살펴 현지에서 한국 대학 학위가 어떻게 평가되는지 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 한국과 몽골에서 진행된 현장연구를 토대로 돈을 벌어 온 학생이주자가 있다는 몽골 사회의 혐의가 한국 대학과 연계된 현지 유학원의 ‘돈 벌면서 학위도 딸 수 있다.’ 는 홍보 전략이 한국 내 몽골 이주 역사와 교차하면서 만들어졌다는 점을 강조한다. 이를 통해 한국 대학이 유학원을 통해 유학생을 모집하려 노력하면 할수록 현지에서 한국 대학 학위의 가치가 떨어지는 문제가 발생한다는 점을 밝힌다. 이러한 문제점이 신흥 유학 목적지로서 한국 대학이 위치를 잡는 과정에서 벌어진다는 점을 강조하면서 한국 유학이 산업화되는 과정에서 일어나는 위험을 졸업생이 감당하고 있다고 주장한다. 나아가 가짜 유학생이 아님을 증명하고 평가절하된 한국 대학 학위의 가치를 높이기 위해 졸업생들이 현지에서 벌이고 있는 다양한 형태의 실천을 살펴 오늘날 한국을 비롯한 신흥 유학목적지에서의 유학 결과물이 어떤 방식으로 졸업생의 삶에 영향을 끼치는지 드러내고자 한다. In this study I explicate the after-study lives of Mongolian international students who graduated from Korean universities and returned home, in order to reveal how the value of a Korean diploma is evaluated in Mongolia. This explication involves analyzing how the members of Mongolian society claim there are bogus students among the alumni. Based on ethnographic research in Korea and Mongolia, I discovered that the suspicion over the Mongolian alumni at home has been shaped by the advertising slogan that the educational brokers takes, such as ‘You can make money while studying in Korea’, which intersects with the long history of Mongolian labor migration to Korea. I argue that the extent of Korean universities’ efforts to attract Mongolian students through the brokers will have repercussions of lowering the value of a Korean diploma in Mongolia. Emphasizing the intrinsic dilemma embedded in the way of advertizing Korea as an emerging Asian hub for study abroad, this study enables me to unpack how alumni deal with risks resulting from the commodification of study abroad. Furthermore, charting the ways in which alumni perform to heighten the value of a Korean diploma at home, this article provides understanding of the results of study abroad which influence the alumna’s lives and community practices for social recognition.
