Purpose : This study aims to examine the effects of home-based respiratory muscle training on respiratory function among the aged in the local community. Methods : A total of 13 elderly subjects were enrolled in this study. All the subjects participated in a respiratory muscle training program conducted at a local health center for 60 minutes a day;1 day per week;for 4 weeks. Additionally;they completed home-based respiratory muscle training each day. This home-based respiratory muscle training consisted of stretching exercises;breathing exercises;and strength training. To determine changes before and after intervention;forced vital capacity (FVC);forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1);forced expiratory volume in one second/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC);maximal inspiratory pressure;maximal expiratory pressure;and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were measured. Paired t-tests were used to analyze all the data. Results : The results showed that there was a significant increase in FEV1 and PEF. Furthermore;there were no significant differences in respiratory strength before and after 4 weeks of training. Conclusion : In conclusion;the home-based respiratory muscle training positively affected respiratory function among the aged in the local community.

The purpose of the study is (i) to investigate the operating situation of physical therapy department in public health centers, (ii) to analyze the difference of elderly satisfaction from non-elderly satisfaction of physical therapy services among the public health center visitors, and finally (iii) to suggest facilitating improvement on programs that can supply the elderly health service through public health centers. A questionnaire survey was carried out 212 patients of 25 public health center in Seoul, Korea from 15 July to 10 August 1996. Major results of the study are as follows : 1. Among the respondents. the largest group was the elderly who are over 65 years old (72.6%). 2. The averge of general patients' satisfaction for physical therapy services was 3.98, especially fee of treatment(4.76), attitude of physical therapist(4.33), and reliance of physical therapist(4.20) were higher by 5-score Likert scale. 3. The correlation factors with general patients' satisfaction were process of treatment (r =.6301). results of treatment(r=. 6186), and guide facilities(r=.5999). 4. The results of multiple-regression analysis between general patients' satisfaction and affecting factors identify following variables as the statically significant determinants : general stisfaction comparing with other physical therapy services, physical therapy services using forwardly, fee of treatment. 5. There was no significant defference between elderly and non-elderly patients' satisfaction of physical therapy service, except attitude of physical therapist(t=-2.07), explanation of treatment for disease(t=-2.19), fee of treatment(t=6.29).

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to determine correlations between grip and lower limb muscle strength and pulmonary function and respiratory muscle in children with cerebral palsy. METHODS: Subjects were 17 children with cerebral palsy. Inclusion criteria for participation were having GMFCS from Ⅰ to Ⅲ grade and ability to independently blow into a spirometer. Pulmonary function and respiratory muscle were measured with a spirometer. All subjects performed maximal expiratory flow maneuvers using a spirometer in order to determine their forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), peak expiratory flow (PEF) and FEV1/FVC, and maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP). Muscle strength was measured in terms of grip strength and lower limb muscle strength in terms of knee extension strength with a dynamometer and manual digital muscle tester respectively. Data were analyzed using Person product correlation. RESULTS: Grip strength significantly positively correlated with FVC (r=0.95, p<0.01), FEV1 (r=0.95, p<0.01), PEF (r=0.84, p<0.01), MIP (r=0.65, p<0.01) MEP (r=0.71, p<0.01) and lower limb strength with FVC (r=0.72, p<0.01), FEV1 (r=0.69, p<0.01), PEF (r=0.54, p<0.05), and MEP (r=0.69, p<0.01). CONCLUSION: Grip and lower limb muscle strengths of children with cerebral palsy were positively correlated pulmonary function and respiratory muscle.

This study was designed to investigate the effect of a year aerobic exercise training on body composition, isokinetic knee and trunk muscular strength of elders. The subjects for this study were eighty healthy elderly people who were members of seniors tower at Song-Do Hospital and didn`t have any history of cardiorepiratory disease. Subjects have been trained three times a week for a year. The exercise program was made up of a 15-minute warm-up, cool-down. Stretching was performed every eight minutes for the prevention of injuries which could occur during the main exercise and quick recovery of the used muscle. Aerobic training was performed for each 15-20minutes using the treadmill and cycle ergometer at the intensity of 50-70% HRmax. For the data, all the measurements were represented by mean and standard deviation using SAS package(version 6.12). Statistical techniques for data analysis were paired t-test to determine the difference between pre and post exercise program. The 5% level of significance was used as the critical level for acceptance of hypotheses for the study. The following results were obtained from this study. 1. There is a statistically significant difference in the VO_2max, fat mass, lean mass and %body fat both old men and women after a year training. 2. There is not a statistically significant difference in the weight, WHR and thigh circumference both old men and women after a year training. 3. There is a statistically significant difference in the right knee flexor/extensor peak torque, peak torque % body weight, total work and total work % body weight both old men and women after a year training. 4. There is a statistically significant difference in the left knee flexor/extensor peak torque, peak torque % body weight, total work and total work % body weight both old men and women after a year training.
