네이버 한글 캠페인 마루 프로젝트를 위한 화면 속 한글꼴 디자인 변화 연구

네이버, 네이버문화재단과 안그라픽스는 화면용 한글꼴을 개발하는 ‘마루 프로젝트’를 진행하며, 컴퓨터의 등장 후 기술의 발전으로 인한 화면 속 글꼴의 변천을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 문헌연구 및 국내외 화면 속 글꼴 사례에 대한 비교분석을 진행하였다. 나아가 오늘날 화면 전용 부리 글꼴의 특성을 비교, 분석하여 마루 프로젝트 글꼴 개발에 참고하였다. 먼저, 연구자들은 화면 관련 기술 발전을 기준으로 시대를 구분하였다. 첫 번째 시대는 컴퓨터와 디지털 한글꼴이 등장한 1980~90년대로, 컴퓨터 내 한글의 입출력 해결을 위한 한글카드, 비트맵 글꼴, 완성형/조합형 등 여러 노력들을 확인할 수 있었다. 두 번째 시대는 웹이 등장하고 디지털 정보가 빠르게 늘어난 2000년대이다. 국내, 해외 모두 대다수의 웹사이트에서 시스템 글꼴을 사용하는 경향을 확인할 수 있었고, 이러한 과정 속에서 웹사이트에서 산세리프와 민부리꼴로 편중되는 경향을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 해외 웹사이트는 2000년대 후반부터 화면용 세리프 글꼴에 대한 연구와 개발이 진행되며 글꼴의 편중이 해소되고 있다. 세 번째 시대는 스마트폰을 중심으로 한 다양한 디지털 기기의 등장으로 인해 글꼴이 변화한 2010년대 이후이다. 세 시대 모두 주요 디지털 소통 매체의 등장과 환경의 변화가 글꼴에 큰 영향을 주었고 이에 맞추어 글꼴이 변해가는 과정을 확인할 수 있었다. 환경의 변화에 맞추어 설계된 화면용 부리 글꼴들을 인쇄용과 비교하였을 때 공통 설계지점이 발견되었다. 연구자들은 이를 로마자 화면용/인쇄용 세리프 글꼴의 특징들과 연결시켜 분석하여 보았다. 연구 결과를 반영하여 설계될 화면용 부리 글꼴인 ‘마루 부리’는 디지털 시각문화를 더욱 우리답게 정돈하고, 디지털 기기 안에서 한글의 고유한 미감을 더욱 살리게 될 것을 기대한다. NAVER, NAVER Cultural Foundation, and Ahn Graphics carried out the ‘Maru Project’ to develop Hangeul fonts for screens, and tried to understand the changes in screen font due to the development of technology after the advent of computers. To this end, a comparative analysis was conducted on literature research and font cases in domestic and overseas screens. Furthermore, the characteristics of today's screen buri font were compared and analyzed and referenced in the development of the Maru project font. First, the researchers divided the eras based on the development of screen-related technologies. The first era was the 1980s and 1990s, when computers and digital Hangeul fonts appeared, and various efforts were made to solve the input/output of Hangeul in computers. The second era is the 2000s, when world wide web was introduced. We founded the tendency of most websites to use system fonts, and in this process, we could find the tendency of websites to be biased towards sans-serif and min-buri. However, in overseas websites, in the late 2000s, the imbalance of fonts was being resolved through research and development of serif fonts for screens. The third era is after the 2010s, when fonts changed due to the advent of various digital devices such as smartphones. In all three eras, the appearance of major digital media and changes in communication methods had a significant impact on fonts, and it was possible to check the process of fonts changing accordingly. A common design point was found when comparing screen buri fonts designed for changes in digital media with those for printing. The researchers analyzed and compared this with the characteristics of the Roman screen/print serif fonts. ‘Maru buri’, which will be designed by reflecting the research results, is expected to enrich the digital visual culture and further enhance the unique aesthetics of Hangeul in digital devices.
