There has been growing interest in hidden subjects in the development of science and technology and it has been reflected not only in academic research but also in popular culture. This study focuses on the Netflix drama series <Cable Girls>, which features telephone operators who played an important role in the early days of telecommunication, and analyzed the labor experience of the telephone operator. In the late 1920s, the setting of the series, telephone operators were one of the few jobs women could have, and were an object of envy. However, the telephone exchange system at the time was still at infancy and was supplemented by women's emotional labor. In addition, low wages and strict labor regulations were applied. The labor had been gendered, standardized and often invisible. <Cable Girls> depicts the friendship and solidarity of women who want to live their lives independently through their jobs as telephone operators in this working environment. Despite the limitations of being a romance melodrama, <Cable Girls> has a special significance in that it describes the multi-layered aspect of telephone operator, re-examining the hidden labor of telephone operators. 과학기술의 발전 과정에서 조명받지 못했던 감춰진 주체에 대한 관심이 학술적인 연구뿐만 아니라 대중문화 콘텐츠에도 반영되고 있다. 이 연구는 초기 전화의 기술사에서 중요한 역할을 담당했던 전화교환원을 주인공으로 내세운 넷플릭스 드라마 <마드리드 모던걸>에 주목하여, 이 작품에 재현된 전화교환원의 노동 경험을 분석하였다. 극의 배경인 1920년대 후반 전화교환원은 여성이 가질 수 있는 몇 안되는 직업 중 하나였으며, 선망의 대상이었다. 그러나 전화교환 노동은 당시의 전화 시스템의 불완전성을 여성의 감정 노동으로 보완하였으며, 낮은 임금과 엄격한 노동 규율이 적용되었다. 노동은 젠더화, 표준화되었으며 종종 비가시화되었다. <마드리드 모던걸>은 이러한 노동 환경 속에서도 전화교환원이라는 직업을 통해 자신의 삶을 주체적으로 살아가고자 하는 여성들의 우정과 연대를 그리고 있다. 멜로드라마적 한계에도 불구하고, <마드리드 모던걸>은 전화교환 노동의 다층적인 면모를 구체적으로 묘사함으로써, 그동안 감춰져 있던 전화교환원의 노동을 재조명했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
