In this paper, a variable induction system applied to turbocharged diesel engine was surveyed with extended operating conditions. The purpose of this study is to improve the volumetric efficiency especially in a low and transient engine speed range where much of the pollutant matters are expelled. Some elements that can affect on volumetric efficiency, for example, in a variable induction system, the secondary induction pipe, resonator, intercooler, and torque variance were examined. Between turbocharger and variable intake system, the concept of the combined supercharging was introduced to interpretate and well understand for the results of wave action during intake process. The volumetric efficiency affects significantly to BHP and the engine performance; torque characteristics, fuel economy and further to emission and noise level. As the torque increasing with the engine speed up, the gas flow in a exhaust pipe become pulsate and then has an effect on boost up capacity of air charging into the cylinder. The phase and amplitude of pulsating wave during the intake system affects on volumetric efficiency when it is matched and tuned effectively to engine. Some of results are depicted which deal with a pressure history during valve events of induction process, accordingly, it enables us to estimate and evaluate for the intake system performance and also, designing stage of the system layout.

Unsteady flows in a semi-induction system was investigated to verify their characteristics. Inside of the induction system in a diesel engine, wave is generated and it affects significantly to breathing performance. The system consists of rotary valve, intake pipe and resonator. To make a air pulsation, a rotary valve was contrived and employed in this system. And also, A side-branched Helmholtz resonator is mounted in the intake pipe to enhance a breathing capacity. The phase and amplitude of the pulsating flow in an unsteady flow system were found to be the strong factor that could be significantly affects to charging capacity. Some of the results given from experiment are described.

This paper describes the engine performance and exhaust emissions of a direct injection diesel engine, operating electronically controlled diesel fuel injector with variable injection timing. Fuel injection was controlled to retard or advance initiation of the injection event by electronically controlled fuel injection unit injector. When fuel is injected into cylinders of a DI diesel engine it will go through ignition delay of processes before being exhausted to the outside. Injection timing of DI diesel engine has a significant effect upon performance and emission
