KBS, MBC
Vol.15 No.2
It can be said that TV news is a strategic program which represents channel identity and brand power of the public broadcaster with its main contents, and a news title plays a key role in its brand communication. Both KBS and MBC have their news titles developed with colored broadcasting from the initial 2D graphics based on a character generator to diverse expressions enabled by the introduction of 3D graphic devices and softwares since the mid-1980s. In the 1990s, both companies offered a sense of presence through improved lighting, texture, and 3D modeling techniques and effects, emphasizing dynamics of cameras and objects. In the external aspect, MBC showed higher field complexity, motion vector, and graphic density than KBS, while the latter gave composition of the title, figures, and so on. On the basis of gestalt psychology, KBS news titles had such morphologic attributes as similarity based on globular shape and continuity for keeping an object in a constant direction. MBC news titles showed such morphologic attributes as similarity with mostly consistent layouts and forms and continuity with the title of MBC News Desk appearing in the center of the screen following the appearance of other elements than the main title. This study aimed to see how the design trend of TV news titles developed in the 1980s and 1990s.
