The acreage of citrus in Cheju Island where is the only citrus growing region in Korean has enormously been increased during past 20 years. Since the protection policy of the citrus industry by the Government, the acreage has been increased 1,000ha, every year during past few years. In citrus industry the field of plant protection is one of the important field. However, lack of specialists in this field research activity has not been satisfactory. This survey aims to diagnose the actual status of citrus pest control in Cheju Island and to draw a reasonable prescription. Data were gathered from 263 farmers for 1972. Analysing data obtained the following conclusion was drawn: 1. In selecting agricultural chemicals for citrus pest control long used ones schould be avoided and instead select those are quite defferent in chmical structure, and selective ones. 2. The rate of dilution of chemicals should be reduced to the indication by the makers and application frequency should also be reduced for less hazadous effect to the natural enemies. 3. Under such an environment like Cheju Island where prevailing wind and raining, high power application instruments are recommended for the quicker and more effective control of the pests. 4. Considering buildup of the resistances of the pests to the conventional chemicals, the following chemicals are recommended for the more effective control of the important pests: Pests Chemicals or control method Citrus red mite Benzomate (Panonychus citri) (Commercial name: Citrazon) Scale insects DMTP compound (Coccoidea) (Commercial mane: Supracide) Citrus leaf miner CARTAP compound (Philocnistis citrella) (Commercial name: Padan) Korean blackish cicada 1. Cutting twigs containing eggs. (Cryptotymapana coreana) 2. Colecting cidadas during summer. Citrus canker Bordeaux mixture (Xanthomonous citri) Scab Foloid (Elsinoe fawcettii) (Commercial name: Difolatan) Melanose Zineb compound (Diaporthe citri) (Commercial name: Dithane Z-78) 5. The more important overwintering pests are citrus red mite (panonychus ulmi) and scalo insects. Thorough application of machine oil emulsion if recommended. 6. For the control of a new insect pest, rusty guardshaped weevil (Sccpticus griseus), sevin or other chemicals should be applied to the out side of the orchards where it comes from. 7. Strengthening of research activity for the development of integrated control of citrus pests is desirable.
