(La Fronde)
Vol.- No.41
The purpose of this study is to discuss the French feminist Marguerite Durand. She was a director of the daily La Fronde, which she hosted and published in Paris in 1897. It was the first daily newspaper whose publication was entirely handled by women, from planning and writing to producing. French women didn’t have citizenship rights yet, being considered minors in late nineteenthcentury France. In addition, French society at the time was very conservative and skeptical of female ability. In that context, it was significant to show the capability of women as serious journalists. She also thought it was important for women to maintain beauty and femininity. She believed that women’s beauty, in the form of seduction, could be used as political tools for the cause of feminism. Some people criticize this perception and her lifestyle. However, it is undeniable that Durand and her journal, La Fronde, played a major role in the history of French feminism.
Vol.55 No.-
The aim of this study is to understand the roots of the anti-Semitic policy of Vichy government by examining the anti-Semitic trend of the France in the 1890s and the 1930s. In 1940, the Third Republic was replaced by the Vichy government called ``l``Etat Francais`` (French State). This Vichy government proclaimed the break with the tradition of the Third Republic and launched France on program called the National Revolution. But the politics of refugees of Vichy has already existed since the end of the Third Republic. It is important that Jews and foreigners were identified since Drumont in the discourse of anti-Semitism in France. It already existed the difference between " the wanted " and "the unwanted" among the foreigners and there were the repressive mesures against the unwanted. The Anti-Semitic policies of the Vichy government wasn``t neither a new invention by the extreme Right and the antisemites nor the mesures under the pressure of German authorities. During the Vichy regime, the Jews was not regarded as the victime of the Nazi, but as the cause of the problem, which weakened the France. The Vichy regime wanted to solve in its own way what it saw as a "Jewish problem" in France.
Vol.0 No.73
Ernest Renan`s Notion of Race` and Racism This article deals with Ernest Renan(1823-1892)`s notion of `race`. In the classical racial theory, which prevailed in the nineteenth century in the name of `scientific racism,` racial differences were seen exclusively in biological terms. In this context, Count Arthur Gobineau is often considered a representative of the racial theory. But his theory had not so much influence as we think on French society. Since the mid-nineteenth century, French scholarly circles have witnessed several attempts which tried to explain the notion of race in historical, linguistic, and psychological terms, not in biological terms. Ernest Renan is on of the leading scholars who advocated and pursued such academic trends. Although he is better known with life of Jesus and What is a nation?, the term of `race` appeared frequently in his works ; his conception of `race` therefore seems to be an important factor for understanding him. Renan was not far away from his contemporaries in the respect that he classified human beings by such biological traits as skin color and admitted the superiority of Europeans (`whites`) to other races. Nonetheless, he rejected the traditional interpretation of race by insisting that the notion of race be approached culturally rather than biologically. The most striking aspect in Renan`s notion of race is that he distinguished between `Aryans` and `Semites` on account of their linguistic differences. Having used other criteria than biological qualities, Renan believed that Aryans representing the West were superior to Semites symbolic of the East. Thereby he presented another sort of racial theory. Renan`s notion of race must be very useful in understanding the racist tendencies against Jews and Muslims in 20th-century and contemporary France.
