        Frequency and Acoustic Reduction in English –ment Derivatives

        This study investigates the influence of frequency on the production of bimorphemic words, and considers which frequency measure is most apt to explain the differences. Previous studies have reported that frequent words are produced faster and more casually than infrequent ones, and that medial segments will yield shorter durations. The present study examines the relation between frequency and the duration of medial segments in English derived words by conducting a production experiment with 6 native speakers of American English using 74 English –ment derivatives, and evaluates whole-word frequency, base frequency, and relative frequency (whole-word frequency divided by base frequency) against one another as predictors. The results show that models incorporating any of the three frequency measures strongly predict medial segment duration. Among the three frequency measures, whole-word frequency explained the most variance, across all consonant types. The duration of segments in highly frequent words tends to be shorter than that in relatively infrequent words. Overall, this study confirms that speakers are sensitive to the extralinguistic information associated with the words such as frequency, and in this case, traditional frequency measures (whole-word and base frequencies) are better predictors than relative frequency.

        Articulation and neutralization: An ultrasound study of inherent and derived palatals in Korean

        Korean exhibits a lexicalized palatalization process in which alveolar stops become palatalized before a high front vowel or a palatal glide across a morpheme boundary. This lexical palatalization creates a sound change in which the resulting palatals from palatalization are perceptually similar to underlying, inherent palatals, and raises the question whether palatals from two different sources are truly neutralizing in the production of Korean speakers. Using ultrasound imaging, one of the recent instrumental techniques in phonological research, this study investigated the articulation of the inherent and derived palatals [ʨ] and [ʨʰ]. Representative tongue contours from 11 speakers show that speakers produce distinct tongue gestures for inherent and derived palatals that are individualized to some extent, and two types of palatals are not neutralizing to at least some speakers. The results provide articulatory evidence of small but systematic contrast between inherent and derived palatals, and show that underlying laryngeal contrast among palatals manifests as gestural differences.

        The development of mathematics itself and science has made it inevitable to reform the contents and methods in teaching mathematics. According to modernizing of arithmetic education I came to make much of the principles, regulation and the power of thinking and deal with in textbook. The most practical matter is to achieve the aim by means of developing new theories of teaching and procedure of learning concerning what method should be used for leading these contents. It is indispensable to quit the teaching method in which teachers have forced children to memorize, and let children find problems and solve them by themselves. This study is to aim at not only generalizing the procedure of discovery learning and extracting the merits and demerits from the types of teachers' problem solving teaching and systematic teaching but also developing teaching and learning method by discovery learning and making man creative.

        Gradient harmony in Korean ideophones: A corpus-based study

        Korean ideophones exhibit vowel harmony in which an impressionistic distinction of vowel qualities known as ‘light’ and ‘dark’ is encoded. This distinction is based on consistent meanings for light and dark in that light ideophones typically presuppose small, light objects or positive events, whereas dark ideophones depict big, heavy objects or negative events. This study claims that the relationship between light/dark vowels and the meanings of Korean ideophones is gradient rather than categorical, and investigates the (lack of) phonological-semantic correspondence using a hand-coded 100-word corpus. A statistical analysis of type and token frequency of 100 4-syllable reduplicative ideophones shows a significant mismatch between vowel qualities and meanings in the token frequency of ideophones, in that phonologically light or dark ideophones are not necessarily semantically light or dark. The findings from this study indicate that the phonological and semantic components of Korean ideophones are only loosely related.

        According to the curriculum, mathematics says shildren understand the principals and the concepts of quantity and geometrical figure from concret, experimental learning which can be analoqized natural phenomena. This thesis, therefore intends to study the theory of the number, from zero to nine, in terms of five games which children can be learned by ordinary playing like putting together card numbers. When special regard will be paid to the fact that children feel like to playng with games, learning numbers by games must be not only promote the motivation of mathematics but increase interesting and keenness on learning. Spontaneous learning by the motivation, therefore, will increase an educational efficency. In case of children, in particular, studies on numbers through game learning must go on working.
