A Window on Identity: Diary Study for Understanding English Language Learners’ Identity Construction

        장은영 한국영어교육학회 2009 ENGLISH TEACHING(영어교육) Vol.64 No.3

Suggesting that how to conceptualize a research topic (i.e., identity) is closely linked to how to study the topic (i.e., research method), this paper addresses three critical questions: 1) Conceptually, how is the notion of identity defined in this particular study? 2) Methodologically, how is a particular research method (i.e., diary study) useful for investigating the identity construction of English language learners? 3) Empirically, what does the present study reveal about the tool of diary study as a critical means for understanding English language learners’ identity construction in the context of American school? Two major findings of this qualitative case study are: first, the interactive nature of diary study made visible the subtle and gradual process of identity construction because the diary study per se served as a context in which the participants acted out their identities. Second, participants’ diaries reflected how they constructed their multiple identities through reconstructing their surrounding contexts. Further, the ways that participants selected and presented particular events for their diaries demonstrated how they understood, questioned, and negotiated their contexts and identities through the writing practice of self-narratives.

Language Learners in SLA Theories: From Good Language Learners to Mediated Investors

        장은영 팬코리아영어교육학회 2012 영어교육연구 Vol.24 No.3

This paper examines how Second Language (L2) learners have been ‘named’ in different Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theories and propose an alternative name, mediated investors, adopting sociocultural and critical approaches to L2 learners and SLA. This paper is divided into two main parts. The first section begins with questioning of prevalent theoretical assumptions on L2 learners in terms of two constructs, ‘language’ and the ‘individual.’ Following this, various SLA studies, which are often referred to as mainstream, are critically reviewed in order to understand specifically how those dominant SLA theories have conceptualized the roles of L2 learners in SLA. In the second section, I integrate theories of Vygotsky, Bourdieu, and Norton and re-name L2 learners ‘mediated investors’ through emphasizing the mediating role of cultural tools, situatedness, power relations, and learner agency. To explore the names of L2 learners in relation to various perspectives to SLA will help conjecture how L2 learners have been viewed in the SLA field and in turn, why certain types of L2 education have received more attention than others have. Furthermore, the new naming of L2 learners as mediated investors will expand understandings of L2 pedagogy as well as of L2 learners.

한중 공통한자를 이용한 중국어 어휘교육: HSK 4급 어휘 한자와 한국 상용한자의 비교를 통하여

        장은영 중국인문학회 2016 中國人文科學 Vol.0 No.62

This paper is focused on the teaching value of the common Chinese characters of South Korea and China. First, this paper analyzed the vocabulary of HSK level 4 and described the characteristics of the words and chinese characters. 1073 Chinese characters used in HSK level 4, about 40% Chinese characters are used in more than two words, the higher the frequency, the higher the value of the teaching. Then, this paper compared the 1073 Chinese characters with Chinese characters commonly used in South Korea, the same Chinese characters are 882 and in the compare process, can found the Chinese characters, which have a frequency of four or more mostly consistent with the Chinese characters used in South Korea, the results said the Chinese characters often used in China also commonly used in South Korean. At last, fourteen Chinese characters, which have a frequency of nine and ten, are chosen to suggest the specific teaching method. When we teach Chinese characters and Chinese language using the Chinese characters commonly used in China and South Korea, if in between the two countries the meaning of words or word usage are different, will lead to confusion in learning. Therefore, teachers should pay attention to the teaching. In addition, should also pay attention to polyphonic characters, such as 长 and 还, etc... The common Chinese characters has some values in the teaching of Chinese language, especially Chinese vocabulary, so properly use the common Chinese characters will certainly help for the teaching of Chinese characters and Chinese language.

한국전쟁기 여성 문화인의 협력과 위반 - 종군 기관지 『코메트』, 『戰線文學』을 중심으로

장은영 원광대학교 인문학연구소 2022 열린정신 인문학연구 Vol.23 No.3

The female writers who published articles in an army magazines had a hierarchical identity as the cultured men. Also They were in charge of producing discourse of ‘women-nation’ by cooperating with 'Nation building' during the war. This paper presupposes that the Korean War was a gender crisis that fixed the gender inequality structure. The purpose of this paper was to examine the ambivalence of the writing of female writers in Jeonsun-Munhak and Comet. The culture claimed by the cultured men symbolized the spiritual medium that united the nation and the people and the power of the people to lead the war to victory. Culture supported the national discourse during the war period, including 'Nation building'. The Cultured men argued that cultural development can be achieved through participation in the war. They also defined war as an inevitable process of new cultural development, and recognized it as an opportunity to promote the excellence of Korean culture. However, the cultured men had a discriminatory gender perception. They criticized women's attitudes about the social issues of increasing war widows, increasing prostitution and prostitution. They pointed out that sexually liberal women's attitudes hinder the interests of the nation. It is difficult to find direct opposition from female writers to this. At that time, female writers were following traditional gender norms while encouraging women to participate in the war by showing their patriotism. Along with anti-communist ideology and militarism, the patriarchal order that supported 'Nation building' controlled women's public activities and living norms. The writing of female writers sympathized with the social criticism and public opinion of war widows and prostitutes, but at the same time gave them a transcendent status that could not evaluate femininity with a masculine perspective. The female writers sensed that war caused a gender crisis and projected the desire for violation in their writing, which they refused to be caught in the masculine gaze. The ambivalence of cooperation and violation in the writing of female writers asks indirectly what war is rather than showing who women are. The ambivalence in writing means a response to the gender crisis during the war.

신문의 ‘보도기사’와 ‘사설’에 쓰인 영어 관계대명사의 담화기능 비교

        장은영 한국중앙영어영문학회 2014 영어영문학연구 Vol.56 No.3

The purpose of this study is to compare the discourse function of English relative pronouns used in ‘news report’ and ‘editorial’ of newspaper. It is assumed that these different registers in newspaper deliver different purpose of discourse respectively. Therefore, it is possible to hypothesize that relative pronouns appearing in newspaper can show different discourse function depending on its discourse purpose. To get this goal, 266 relative pronouns in ‘news report’ and 265 relative pronouns in ‘editorial’ were collected. They are also classified by the types of OS, OO, SS, SO and by restrictive or non-restrictive usage in order to identify discourse functions. The results showed that both ‘news report’ and ‘editorial’ have common characteristics such as the preference of 4 types of relative pronoun and more dominant using of restrictive usage. It is because cognitive language processing ability and discourse functions are applied in most of our language registers. The findings of the study also indicate that different preference of certain type of relative pronouns between ‘news report’ and ‘editorial’ is derived from realizing distinctive discourse purpose. The findings in this study are believed to improve our understanding on specific relative pronouns used in order to reflect discourse functions in accordance with discourse purpose.
