        Natural gas storage with an adsorbent has been considered a promising technology for use in natural gas flued vehicles. Among adsorbents investigated, carbon materials are the most effective in the storage of natural gas at low pressures around 40atm. Activated carbons were prepared with chemical treatment of rice hulls using KOH. Activated carbon powder was mixed with phenol/starch solution as a binder and then pressed in a mold at 70atm to produce into a monolithic form. The monolithic form was cured at 120℃ in a convection oven. Bulk density was increased with the binder content and the highest bulk density was obtained with 50% of binder content. Methane capacity(v/v) was increased with binder contents due to the higher packing density. The highest methane capacity determined with 40% of binder contents as 96v/v.

        This paper is studied to improve the curriculum of the College of Industrial Education of Chungnam National University, which is more helpful for the students to become a competent teacher of technical high school. The thesis includes the curriculum of general, professional, technical subjects and so on. The main conclusions are summarized as follows; 1) The current curriculum of the College of Industrial Education was formed on a wholesale manner following the basis of standard courses for some characterized engineering colleges. But the suggested is conformed to the curriculum system of CNU in credits and hours. 2) The current technical subjects are mainly based on the curriculum of college of engineering, but the newly suggested technical subjects are conformed to the curriculum of technical high school as following that some departments of engineering are founded in the College of Industrial Education. 3) In current curriculum, the ratio of reguired technical subjects to elective technical subjects is 85:15. In suggested curriculum, the ratio of it is largely changed to 45:55 for effective operation of minor cousres. And the lists of the subjects for minor courses are changed from subjects for College of Science to subjects for College of Engineering.

      • Pentadecafluorroctyl Polyacrylate에 依한 Nylon 6 纖維의 撥水加工에 關한 硏究

        This study has been investigated on the effects of fluorochemical repellent agent on the water repellent finishes of nylon 6 fibre with pentadecafluorooctyl polyacrylate. Contact angles of various liquids on the fluorochemical treated nylon 6 surface are measured. The critical surface tension of about 46 dynes per cm on the nylon 6 surface is resulted. The effect of fluorochemical repellent was most favourable at 1% concentration repellent agent and the critical surface tension is resulted the value of about 10.5 dynes per cm. The use of antistatic agent in the fluorochemical repellent was most favourable below 0.5% concentration. It was found that the repellent effects were improved by repeated treatments with the solution of lower concentration of repellent.

        Soduble species bi-producing in the synthesis of analcite making use of domestic clay and silicate minerals are recovered. And the usefulness as inorganic materials for textile finishing was investigated. The results are summerized as follows; 1. Hydrosol from bentontonite ore have a good effect for textile finishing. 2. The soil-resistant effect for cloth treating with hydrosol from bentonite ore is compared with organic dispersants. 3. The breaking strength is increased about 30% by treatment to each fibers in rope and also elongation is controlled same as raw materials.

        This paper aims at providing a concrete plan to improve technical and vocational teacher education in the College of Industrial Education of Chungnam National University. It is intended to propose a practical four-year regular and short-term course. Also, the estimated required facilities is included in this study as well as their management. The main conclusions and recommendations are summarized as follows; 1) The numbers of students enrollment should be reduced to 220 students which is the approximate number of future demand. 2) In order to offer to the students a broader education and to cope with the increase/decrease in demand of technical and vocational teacher within a specific field, the 8 department existing at the present (Department of Architecture Engineering Education, Civil Eng. Educ., Metallurgical Eng. Educ., Mechanical Eng. .Educ., Electrical Eng. Educ., Electronic Eng. Educ., Industrial Chemistry Educ. and Industrial Technology Educ.) would be combined into 5 (Department of Construction Engineering Education, Mechanical Eng. Educ., Electrical Eng. Educ., Industrial Chemistry Educ. and Industrial Technology Educ.). 3) The short-term course program is recommened to provide additional training and education to those candidates who already have experience in technical fields to meet an occasional demand. 4) It is necessary to add the Teaching Profession Section in the administrative organization of the College.

      • 4H-SiC Planar MESFETs on High-Purity Semi-Insulating Substrates

        <P>Planar MESFETs were fabricated on high-purity semi-insulating (HPSI) 4H-SiC substrates. The saturation drain current of the fabricated MESFETs with a gate length of 0.5 μm and a gate width of 100 μm was 430 mA/mm, and the transconductance was 25 mS/mm. The maximum oscillation frequency and cut-off frequency were 26.4 GHz and 7.2 GHz, respectively. The power gain was 8.4 dB and the maximum output power density was 2.8 W/mm for operation of class A at CW 2 GHz. MESFETs on HPSI substrates showed no current instability and much higher output power density in comparison to MESFETs on vanadium-doped SI substrates.</P>

      • VIRTUAL REALITY SHIP SIMULATOR

        This paper describes prototype Virtual Reality Ship Simulator (VRSS) that we have recently developed next-generation training equipment based on the virtual reality (VR) technology. The inherent defects of conventional ship simulators are enormous costs and difficult system upgrade due to the system construction. such as large mock-up bridge system. wide visual presentations. In this paper, to cope with those problems. we explored VR technologies that can give realistic environments in a virtual world. Then we constructed prototype VRSS system. which is, consists of PC-based human sensors. and Databases set having 3D object models and coefficients of Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs). 3D-WEBMASTER authoring tool was used as Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). Using the VRSS system, we constructed Port and Passage Simulator for the harbor of INCHON in Korea, and Ship and Sea State Simulator for an arbitrary given sea environmental states by user. Through many simulation tests. we testified the efficiency of developed prototype VRSS by subject assessment with five participants. Then, we present results on the simulation experiments and conclude with discussion of evaluation results.

      • Digital Magnetic Compass With Smart Correction Function

        The paper describes recent experimental results on the development of Digital Magnetic Compass (DMC), which can provide smart automatic correction to the magnetic interferences. The design methodology of magnetic sensing circuit with ring-core fluxgate sensor is represented. The performance results of the sensing circuits are discussed with error analysis by polynomial regressions. As test results, the sensing circuit filtered only the second harmonic signal that is proportional to the direction of earth's magnetic field, and it leads to the obtainment of bearing information. In addition, the total residual errors of DMC can be analyzed by the adoption of polynomial regressions. It shown that the possibility of high precise DMC, in the future.

        Design of Passive-Type Radar Reflector

        This paper describes design method of Passive-type Radar Reflector (PRR) which is to provide the requirement of newly revised 2000 SOLAS regulations on the Radar Reflector. The main target of this work is to find the optimum shape of a radar target having large Radar Cross Section (RCS). Through the RCS analysis based on the theoretical approach, two kinds of PRR models, PRR-F model for use in fisheries and PRR-S model for use in small sized ship, are designed and discussed their Res performance. RCS measurement tests for the various sized samples are carried out in an anechoic chamber. As evaluation results it was clearly shown that the conventional sphere-type shows optimum shape in case of PRR-S, while the cylinder-type which consists of large sized corner clusters or zig-zag flat plats gives best performance in case of PRR-F.

      • Modeling perceived collision risk in vessel encounter situations

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Risk perception of the situation by an officer on watch is the basis for improving situational awareness, which is crucial in preventing ship collisions in vessel encounter situations. Defining risk perception for a vessel collision situation requires identifying the perceived risk. This paper derives a multiple linear regression model for studying risk perception on a ship in various collision encounter situations. To illustrate the procedure, the collision risk perceived by Korea Coast Guard officers on a patrol ship was obtained and applied to calibrate the regression model. The results demonstrate that the proposed model can be used to define risk perception and to provide a better understanding of the perceived risk in collision encounter situations. The application of some interesting results to the enhancement of the perception of the situation was also discussed.<SUP>∗</SUP> </P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Risk perception of a ship's collision encounter situation was established as a topic. </LI> <LI> The intensity of the perceived risk to the encountered distance and bearing was identified. </LI> <LI> The phase difference between the ship and risk perception domains was found to be 127°. </LI> <LI> The results facilitate the modeling of risk perception and visualization of collision encounter situations. </LI> </UL> </P>
