        Protective effects of vitamins C and E on dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane-induced genotoxicity and hepatotoxicity in human liver cells

        Dichlorodiphenoxytrichloroethane (DDT), a persistent organic pollutant and hepatotoxicant, is used to control the malaria. However, scarce information exists on relevant effective inhibitors of DDT’ toxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate protective effects of natural antioxidants vitamin C (VC) or/and vitamin E (VE) on p,pʹ-DDT-induced genotoxicity and hepatotoxicity in human liver cells. p,pʹ-DDT exposure increased levels of chromatin condensation, comet parameter, micronucleus induction and DPC coefficient of HL-7702 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Also, an increase in mRNA levels of CYP1A1 as well as CYP3A4, and a decrease in UGT along with GST were observed. Interestingly, supplementation with VC or/and VE prevented p,pʹ-DDT-caused alterations in DNA damage and phase metabolism gene expressions, and the combination of VC and VE had a more protective effect than VC or VE alone. These findings illustrated that VC or/and VE could be beneficial for the alleviation of p,pʹ-DDT-incurred toxicity in human liver cells.

      • Adiponectin Receptor 1 (ADIPOR1) rs1342387 Polymorphism and Risk of Cancer: a Meta-analysis

        Many studies have indicated possible associations between a polymorphism of adiponectin receptor 1 (ADIPOR1) rs1342387 and risk of cancer, but contradictory results have been reported. The main aim of this study was to draw a reliable conclusion about the relationship between the rs1342387 polymorphism and cancer incidence, by conducting a literature search of Pubmed, Embase, Wanfang and Cochrane libraries. Eleven studies including 3, 738 cases and 4, 748 controls were identified in this meta-analysis. The ADIPOR1 rs1342387 polymorphism was associated with risk of colorectal cancer for all genetic comparison models (GG vs AA, OR: 1.44, 95%CI: 1.21-1.70; G carriers vs A carriers, OR: 1.23, 95%CI: 1.11-1.36; dominant model, OR: 1.28, 95%CI: 1.10-1.49 and recessive model, OR: 1.31, 95%CI: 1.12-1.55). Stratified by ethnicity, the rs1342387 polymorphism was significantly associated with risk of colorectal cancer in Asian ancestry for all genetic comparison models (GG vs AA, OR: 1.56, 95%CI: 1.26-1.92; G carriers vs. A carriers OR: 1.30, 95%CI: 1.18-1.43; dominant model OR: 1.31, 95%CI: 1.08-1.60 and recessive model OR: 1.44, 95%CI: 1.26-1.64), but not in Caucasian or mixed (Caucasian mainly) groups. In summary, the ADIPOR1 rs1342387 polymorphism is significantly associated with risk of colorectal cancer among individuals of Asian ancestry.

        Exact and complete fundamental solutions for penny-shaped crack in an infinite transversely isotropic thermoporoelastic medium: mode I problem

        This paper examines the problem of a penny-shaped crack in a thermoporoelastic body. On the basis of the recently developed general solutions for thermoporoelasticity, appropriate potentials are suggested and the governing equations are solved in view of the similarity to those for pure elasticity. Exact and closed form fundamental solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions. The singularity behavior is then discussed. The present solutions are compared with those in literature and an excellent agreement is achieved. Numerical calculations are performed to show the influence of the material parameters upon the distribution of the thermoporoelastic field. Due to its ideal property, the present solution is a natural benchmark to various numerical codes and simplified analyses.

        Removal of As(V) from Water Using Lanthanum Hydroxide

        This study was conducted to evaluate the usability of lanthanum hydroxide for arsenic removal from water. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to study the influence of various factors such as pH, contact time, initial arsenic concentration and presence of competing anions on arsenic adsorption by lanthanum hydroxide. Lanthanum hydroxide had a higher affinity for As(V) than As(III). Efficient As(V) removal was observed in the pH<sub>eq</sub> 4.0~8.0. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model described well the experimental data. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 125.0 mg/g. The adsorption energies of 16.00~16.28 kJ/mol indicate an ion exchange process as primary adsorption mechanism. The presence of competing anions, except for phosphate, did not significantly affect As(V) removal by lanthanum hydroxide. The As(V) adsorbed on lanthanum hydroxide could be desorbed with NaOH solution. The results of this study demonstrate the potential usability of lanthanum hydroxide as an excellent As(V) selective adsorbent.

        A New Quorum-Sensing Inhibitor Attenuates Virulence and Decreases Antibiotic Resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

        Quorum sensing (QS) has been a novel target for the treatment of infectious diseases. Here structural analogs of Pseudomonas aeruginosa autoinducer N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) were investigated for QS inhibitor (QSI) activity and a novel QSI was discovered, N-decanoyl-L-homoserine benzyl ester (C2). Virulence assays showed that C2 downregulated total protease and elastase activities, as well as the production of rhamnolipid, that are controlled by QS in P.aeruginosa wild-type strain PAO1 without affecting growth. C2 was also shown to inhibit swarming motility of PAO1. Using a microdilution checkerboard method, we identified synergistic interactions between C2 and several antibiotics, tobramycin, gentamycin, cefepime, and meropenem. Data from real-time RT-PCR suggested that C2 inhibited the expression of lasR (29.67%), lasI (21.57%), rhlR (28.20%), and rhlI (29.03%).

      • Numerical simulation on the coupled chemo-mechanical damage of underground concrete pipe

        Long-termly used in water supply, an underground concrete pipe is easily subjected to the coupled action of pressure loading and flowing water, which can cause the chemo-mechanical damage of the pipe, resulting in its premature failure and lifetime reduction. Based on the leaching characteristics and damage mechanism of concrete pipe, this paper proposes a coupled chemo-mechanical damage and failure model of underground concrete pipe for water supply, including a calcium leaching model, mechanical damage equation and a failure criterion. By using the model, a numerical simulation is performed to analyze the failure process of underground concrete pipe, such as the time-varying calcium concentration in concrete, the thickness variation of pipe wall, the evolution of chemo-mechanical damage, the distribution of concrete stress on the pipe and the lifetime of the pipe. Results show that, the failure of the pipe is a coupled chemo-mechanical damage process companied with calcium leaching. During its damage and failure, the concentrations of calcium phase in concrete decrease obviously with the time, and it can cause an increase in the chemo-mechanical damage of the pipe, while the leaching and abrasion induced by flowing water can lead to the boundary movement and wall thickness reduction of the pipe, and it results in the stress redistribution on the pipe section, a premature failure and lifetime reduction of the pipe.

        Fibulin2: a negative regulator of BMSC osteogenic differentiation in infected bone fracture healing

        Bone fracture remains a common occurrence, with a population-weighted incidence of approximately 3.21 per 1000. In addition, approximately 2% to 50% of patients with skeletal fractures will develop an infection, one of the causes of disordered bone healing. Dysfunction of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) plays a key role in disordered bone repair. However, the specific mechanisms underlying BMSC dysfunction caused by bone infection are largely unknown. In this study, we discovered that Fibulin2 expression was upregulated in infected bone tissues and that BMSCs were the source of infection-induced Fibulin2. Importantly, Fibulin2 knockout accelerated mineralized bone formation during skeletal development and inhibited inflammatory bone resorption. We demonstrated that Fibulin2 suppressed BMSC osteogenic differentiation by binding to Notch2 and inactivating the Notch2 signaling pathway. Moreover, Fibulin2 knockdown restored Notch2 pathway activation and promoted BMSC osteogenesis; these outcomes were abolished by DAPT, a Notch inhibitor. Furthermore, transplanted Fibulin2 knockdown BMSCs displayed better bone repair potential in vivo. Altogether, Fibulin2 is a negative regulator of BMSC osteogenic differentiation that inhibits osteogenesis by inactivating the Notch2 signaling pathway in infected bone.

        Removal of Arsenic from Water using Hydrous Stannic Oxide (HSO): I. Adsorption Behavior of HSO and HSO-Polyacrylonitrile Composite Beads

        Hydrous stannic oxide (HSO), which is particulate, can be immobilized with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and molded into HSO-PAN composite beads without significantly affecting the adsorption behavior of HSO. The HSO had a higher affinity for As(III) than As(V). Efficient adsorption of As(III) was observed in the pHeq range of 2.0~9.0. The competing anions studied showed no significant adverse effects on the adsorption of As(III) onto HSO. Langmuir isotherm model and Temkin model described well the experimental data. The monolayer adsorption capacities for As(III) obtained from HSO and HSO-PAN beads were 45.7 mg/g and 36.0 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption energies of 10.21~15.07 kJ/mol indicated the chemisorption process as the primary adsorption mechanism. The adsorption process followed a pseudo second-order kinetic model and was controlled by external and internal particle diffusion. The results indicated that HSO can be used as an efficient scavenger for As(III) from the contaminated water.

        A Study between the Internal Control and Tax Risk -Based on the Listed Real Estate Enterprises in China-

        2009년 5월에 중국 세무총국은 기업에서 세무리스크 관리 시스템을 구축할 수 있도록 돕기 위해〈대기업의 세무리스크 관리지침〉(2009)을 발표하였다. 이번에 처음 세무리스크에 대해 공식적으로 별도 제시되어 학술계에서 큰 반향을 유발하였다. 세무리스크는 기업이 직면한 재무리스크중에 하나이며 그 효과를 무시할 수 없다. 부적절한 취급 또는 경미한 태만은 경제적 손실, 평판의 손상 및 심지어 파산위기를 초래 할 수 있다. 대부분 기업에서 부적절한 내부통제 시스템으로 인한 세금리스크 관리능력이 제한되기 때문에 중국에서 세금리스크 관리가 이미 시작되었다. 이는 경영 실적에 영향을 미치고 이익을 보장하는 중요한 요소이며 세무리스크를 통제하고 감소하는 것은 기업의 생존과 발전에 중요한 결정 요소이다. 본 연구는 내부통제 이론을 기반으로 경영 품질, 보고품질 및 규정준수 품질의 관점에서 연구를 진행하고자 한다. 2013년부터 2017년까지 중국 A주 부동산업 90개 상장기업을 연구대상으로 삼고 세무리스크에 관한 가설을 제시하였다. 연속 5년간의 450개 표본 데이터를 가져와 회귀 분석을 하였다. 분석결과에 따라 경영 품질은 10% 수준에서 유의한 양(+)상관관계가 나타났다. 보고 품질은 5% 수준에서 유의한 음(-) 상관관계가 나타났다. 규정준수 품질은 10% 수준에서 유의한 음(-) 상관관계가 나타났다. 마지막으로, 기업의 세무리스크와 내부통제를 실현의 각도에 대한 상관관계를 분석하고 세무리스크를 통제하고 감소하기 위해 합리적인 제안을 제시하였다. 이 연구결과는 기업이 전략 계획을 수립하고 리스크를 예방할 수 있는 참고를 제공하였다. In May 2009, the State Administration of Taxation issued the “Guidelines for the Management of tax risk of Large Enterprises”(2009) to help enterprises establish a tax risk management system. This is the first time that tax risk have been formally presented in a separate form, causing a stir in the academic and practical circles. Tax risk is one of the financial risks faced by enterprises. The consequences can not be underestimated. Improper handling or slight neglect may bring economic losses, reputation damage and even bankruptcy crisis. At present, the tax risk management of Chinese enterprises has just started. Many enterprises have inadequate internal control systems and limited ability to manage tax risk. Tax risk have become an important factor affecting business results and safeguarding corporate interests. The control and reduction of risks is crucial to the survival and development of enterprises. This paper cuts through the internal control of the enterprise, and selects 90 enterprises during 2013-2017 for the total of 450 samples in the A-share real estate industry listed in China"s securities market as the research object. Combined with the theory of internal control and from the perspectives of operation, reporting and compliance with taxation the hypothesis is proposed and regression models are constructed. The empirical study is related to the correlation between the degree of implementation of internal control and corporate tax risk, and finds that The quality of the operation is positively correlated with the tax risk of the enterprise in the level of 10%. The quality of the report is negatively correlated with the tax risk of the enterprise in the level of 5%. The quality of compliance is negatively correlated with the tax risk of the enterprise in the level of 10%. Finally, the paper puts forward reasonable suggestions for the reduction and prevention of tax risk. The study results provide references for enterprises to make strategic plans and prevent risks.
