        Child Poverty in Rural China: Multidimensional Perspective

        This paper describes a pilot study on child multidimensional poverty in rural China by introducing the Alkire–Foster method based on survey data collected from five provinces/autonomous regions. Results showed that the headcount ratio of child multidimensional poverty was 14.29%. On average, multidimensionally poor children were deprived in 37.62% of all the dimensions, and their adjusted headcount ratio (multidimensional poverty) index was 0.054. Health was the most deprived dimension, followed by the subsistence and participation dimensions. Disabled children, children influenced by HIV/AIDS, and ethnic minority children were severely deprived. This study not only adds to the current literature on child poverty in China, but also provides policy suggestions for future action plans.

      • Study on credit risk prediction of listed companies in China

        This paper used mixed logit model to predict crdit risk of listed companies in China. In order to reduce the difficulty in dealing with the facts of correlation and multi-dimension of the financial indexes and meanwhile to ensure that the information is not lost, we introduced factor analysis to the mixed logit equation and thereby constructed a Factor Analysis Mixed Logit Model. Fifteen factors were extracted from original financial indexes, and four main factors which affect dramatically were selected to substitute the original financial indexes as explanatory variables. The empirical results showed that though prediction accuracy of the new method is a little lower than mixed logit model"s, it can reach more than 80%. The new approach presented in this paper is more reliable because it eliminates correlation of explanatory variables and reduces information loss effectively.

        Transcription factor Sp1 is necessary and functional in regulating expression of oncogene ZNF703

        Zinc finger protein 703 (ZNF703) is a putative oncogene in patients with the luminal B molecular subtype of breast cancer. Although the exact function of ZNF703 protein remains largely unknown, its expression and regulation have been implicated in several physiological and pathological processes. In the current study, for the first time, we identified and characterized the human ZNF703 gene promoter region. As a means of characterizing the transcription elements required for expression of ZNF703 protein at different stages, we cloned the promoter region of ZNF703 then created chimeric reporter plasmids for use in luciferase assays. A progressive deletion analysis of the ZNF703 gene’s 5′ and 3′ -flanking regions revealed that the core promoter is located in a 256-bp region ranging from nt-539 to nt-283. Next, we examined the effects of sitespecific mutations and treatment with mithramycin A to identify the functional Sp1 binding site, which was found to be located in a 447 bp region that ranged from nt-509 to nt-76, displayed the characteristics of a CpG island, and overlapped with the promoter region. In conclusion, our data suggest that ZNF703 transcription is regulated by transcription factor Sp1. This finding should facilitate future studies of the mechanism which regulates expression of this important gene.

        Roof failure of shallow tunnel based on simplified stochastic medium theory

        The failure mechanism of tunnel roof is investigated with upper bound theorem of limit analysis. The stochastic settlement and nonlinear failure criterion are considered in the present analysis. For the collapse of tunnel roof, the surface settlement is estimated by the simplified stochastic medium theory. The failure curve expressions of collapse blocks in homogeneous and in layered soils are derived, and the effects of material parameters on the potential range of failure mechanisms are discussed. The results show that the material parameters of initial cohesion, nonlinear coefficient and unit weight have significant influences on the potential range of collapse block in homogeneous media. The proportion of collapse block increases as the initial cohesion increases, while decreases as the nonlinear coefficient and the unit weight increase. The ground surface settlement increases with the tunnel radius increasing, while the possible collapse proportion decreases with increase of the tunnel radius. In layered stratum, the study is investigated to analyze the effects of material parameters of different layered media on the proportion of possible collapse block.

        Bond deterioration of corroded steel in two different concrete mixes

        This paper investigated the effects of rebar corrosion on bond performance between rebar and two different concrete mixes (compressive strengths of 20.7 MPa and 44.4 MPa). The specimen was designed as a rebar centrally embedded in a 200 mm concrete cube, with two stirrups around the rebar to supply confinement. An electrochemical accelerated corrosion technique was applied to corrode the rebar. 120 specimens of two different concrete mixes with various reinforcing steel corrosion levels were manufactured. The corrosion crack opening width and length were recorded in detail during and after the corrosion process. Three different loading schemes: monotonic pull-out load, 10 cycles of constant slip loading followed by pullout and varied slip loading followed by pull-out, were carried out on the specimens. The effects of rebar corrosion with two different concrete mixes on corrosion crack opening, bond strength and corresponding slip value, initial slope of bond-slip curve, residual bond stress, mechanical interaction stress, and energy dissipation, were discussed in detail. The mean value and coefficient of variation of these parameters were also derived. It was found that the coefficient of variation of the parameters of the corroded specimens was larger than those with intact rebar. There is also obvious difference in the two different concrete mixes for the effects of rebar corrosion on bond-slip parameters.

      • A Key Management and Cross-layer Routing Scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks

        In this paper, a key management and security multi-hop routing scheme based on cross layer (SMRCL) was proposed for wireless sensor networks. The core of SMRCL has two parts as following. Firstly, a key management based on polynomial and time deployment for wireless sensor networks is proposed. In this scheme, the sensor nodes are divided into several deployment groups and deployed the network according to the time. Moreover polynomial is used instead of common key, which the redundant polynomial is deleted when a deployment group has been deployed to the network. Secondly, a multi-hop routing algorithm is proposed based on cross-layer, which can be used in large scale. In the algorithm, we can use the information of the MAC layer, consider the cross-layer design by the ratio of the packet sending/reception rate and queue length to improve the network load ability. Simulation results demonstrate that SMRCL can save energy and balance the network load and improve the network lifetime. Comparison of the probability of the sensor connectivity, performance of resistance to the node capture and the sensor node overheads, show that the scheme can guarantee the high probability of node secure connectivity, improves the performance of resistance to the node capture, reduces the node storage overhead effectively.

        De novo transcriptomic analysis of gonad of Strongylocentrotus nudus and gene discovery for biosynthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids

        Background Strongylocentrotus nudus is an important cultured sea urchin species in north China, because its gonad is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, particularly long polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs). These PUFAs play pleiotropic and crucial roles in a wide range of biological process. Objective However, the genes contributing to biosynthesis PUFAs have not been elucidated yet, and the molecular mechanism relative to the difference in PUFA composition between male and female gonad as been revealed but the corresponding has not been understood. Methods In this paper, solexa sequencing based transcriptomic approach was used to identify and characterize the key genes relative to PUFA synthesis and further conducted different expressed genes between male and female gonad. Results A total of 130,124 transcripts and 189330 unigenes were de novo assembled from 64.32 Gb data. Next, these unigenes were subjected to functional annotation by mapping to six public databases, and this process revealed a lot of genes involving in lipid metabolism. In addition, three types of fatty acids front-end desaturase and three species of very long fatty acids elongase were identified and the pathway for PUFA biosynthesis was hypothesized. Last, comparative analysis revealed the higher expression level of Δ5 desaturase, Δ6 desaturase, ELOVL-4, -6 and -7 in male gonad compared with female. Conclusion This results could plausible explain the differ in composition of PUFAs between male and female gonad of sea urchin.

        Splanchnic nerve neurolysis via the transdiscal approach under fluoroscopic guidance: a retrospective study

        Background: Neurolytic celiac plexus block (NCPB) is a typical treatment for severe epigastric cancer pain, but the therapeutic effect is often affected by the variation of local anatomical structures induced by the tumor. Greater and lesser splanchnic nerve neurolysis (SNN) had similar effects to the NCPB, and was recently performed with a paravertebral approach under the image guidance, or with the transdiscal approach under the guidance of computed tomography. This study observed the feasibility and safety of SNN via a transdiscal approach under fluoroscopic guidance. Methods: The follow-up records of 34 patients with epigastric cancer pain who underwent the splanchnic nerve block via the T11-12 transdiscal approach under fluoroscopic guidance were investigated retrospectively. The numerical rating scale (NRS), the patient satisfaction scale (PSS) and quality of life (QOL) of the patient, the dose of morphine consumed, and the occurrence and severity of adverse events were recorded preoperatively and 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 2 months after surgery. Results: Compared with the preoperative scores, the NRS scores and daily morphine consumption decreased and the QOL and PSS scores increased at each postoperative time point (P < 0.001). No patients experienced serious complications. Conclusions: SNN via the transdiscal approach under flouroscopic guidance was an effective, safe, and easy operation for epigastric cancer pain, with fewer complications.
