      • A study on operational investigation and preference of electrical appliances for elder persons

        The purpose of the study is to grasp operational procedure and preference of electrical appliance for elder persons. The preference of four alarm clocks which were digital or analog display was investigated as test1. The operational procedure of ATM, air-conditioner, radio-cassette recorder, electric pot and copy machine were investigated as test2. As results, we found that the preference of alarm clocks depends on their experience and elder persons can operate apparatus based on only one procedure “ input ---> adjustment ---> output” which is common procedure of products in the 1960s or 1970s in Japan..

      • A universal design method using 3 Point task analysis and 9 universal design items

        In order to examine universal design, 1 have developed two analytical methodologies based on 3P(point) task analysis: structured task analysis and task matrix analysis. I also extracted nine universal design items, namely (1) adjustment, (2) redundancy, (3) specification and function transparency, (4) feedback and (5) error tolerance, (6) effective acquisition of information, (7) ease of understanding and judgment, (8) comfortable operation, and (9) continuity of information and operation. Structured task analysis is used to uncover problems in each of the tasks constituting a job for each functionally challenged condition of users, and solutions to the extracted problems are examined in terms of the above-mentioned nine universal design items. Task matrix analysis calls for the production of a table for each task in a job. In each table, nine items form the columns, and the horizontal rows list all disability types. Then, solutions are formulated for each cell formed by the intersecting columns and rows. Using these two analysis methods, 1 have conducted a verification experiment for the universal design of a public bus. The results of the research have enabled me to propose various ,solutions from a system-based perspective, instead of coming up with the superficial and isolated solutions which are normally produced when conventional analytical methods are used.

      • A GUI DESIGN GUIDELINE TO CONSTRUCT MENTAL MODELS EASILY (p.221-224)

        The design guideline to construct the mental model was proposed. The guideline was constructed from the viewpoint of the functional model and the structural model of mental model. And it was examined based on structure mapping theory. The guideline was described from the viewpoint of the design principles between screens and on screens. The guideline was evaluated for the validation. 7 UI designers and 22 usability engineers in Japan participated in the test for the guideline. The results were evaluated highly , however the concrete description and examples were pointed out to be needed.

      • A CONSIDERATION OF SERVICE DESIGN ANALYSIS

        A service design analysis (SDA) was constructed based on five aspects of Human Machine Interface and 3 items between user(customer) and employee. Human Machine Interface (HMI) consists of the following five aspects: 1) physical aspect, 2) information aspect, 3) temporal aspect, 4) environmental aspect, 5) organizational aspect. Especially (a) effective acquirement of information, (b) ease of understanding and judgment, and (c) comfortable operation are important in five aspects. Design and evaluation items between user (customer) and employee are (a) notice of users, (b) appropriate correspondence and (c) good attitude. Activation items of employee are (a) policy of organization, (b) sharing information, (c) motivation. SDA constructed based on 3P task analysis and can evaluate service using five aspects of Human Machine Interface and 3 items between user(customer) and employee. The procedure of the service task analysis is as follows.1) A basic scene is selected as a scene analyzed, 2) Basic tasks in a scene are decided, 3) Problems are extracted from tasks using six items, 4) Problems are converted into user requirements. Lastly a hotel in Paris was evaluated using SDA for validation.

      • THE EFFECTIVENESS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF 3 POINT TASK ANALYSIS AS A NEW ERGONOMIC AND KANSEI DESIGN METHOD

        This paper describes effectiveness and characteristics of 3 P(point) task analysis as a new Ergonomic and Kansei design method for extracting user demand especially. The key point in 3 P task analysis is to describe the flow of tasks and extract any problems in each task. A solution of a problem means a user demand. 3 P task analysis cal eliminate an oversight of check items by examining the users`` information processing level. The suers`` information processing level was divided into the following three stages for problem extraction: acquirement of information ---> understanding and judgment ---> operation. Three stages has fourteenth cues such as difficulty of seeing, no emphasis, mapping for extracting problems. To link analysis results to the formulation of a product concept. I added a column on the right side of the table for writing the requirements (user demand) to resolve the problems extracted from each task. The requirements are extracted by using seventh cues. Finally 3 P task analysis was compared with group interview to make the characteristics of 3 P task analysis, especially extracting user demand, clear.

      • METHOD OF FINDING SITUATIONS WHICH CAUSE PROBLEMS IN HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

        Introduction: Even if each of the problems on HCI individually found is solved, easy-to-use products can not be developed overall. It is hoped to derive a drastic solution now. To discover the design subject area, it proposes the method of discovering the situation in which the problem happens. Method: The situation in which the problem found by task analysis happens is recorded according to a certain classification, and the situation key word is extracted. The categorical data sheet where the situation key word of the problem is recorded is attempted and making the situation key word with relativity a group is attempted to the factor analysis. The situation where the situation keyword with relativity describes becomes a design subjects. Result: It was confirmed that it was possible to experiment on the case where this method is used, and to describe by the combination of situations in which the problem happened because of the situation key word with relativity.

      • EXTRACTION OF SERVICE DESIGN ITEMS IN RESTAURANTS BY THE SENTENCE COMPLETION TEST

        Introduction : Also in ergonomics, research of service is very important. But a research of the service design is seldom still done. Methods : The questionnaire survey was done to clarify the factors of "the service of restaurants for people to go to", and "the service of restaurants for people not to go to." This questionnaire was surveyed using sentence completion test. Results : The factors were extracted and the service design items were structured. The items were classified into three categories. Finally, the nine design items were extracted. Conclusions : The service design items such as Satisfaction, Expectation, Atmosphere and so on were extracted.
