We describe a case of congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus with severe dilatation of bilateral urinary tracts without anatomical obstructions. Functional obstruction can be occurred when polyuria surpasses the transporting ability of urine in the urinary tract. The patient was admitted to our hospital due to decreased mentality developed after traffic accident. On radiologic study, bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter were noted. Because the patient excreted copious dilute urine, we performed water deprivation test and the result was consistent with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. We are presenting this case in an attempt to describe strong association between congenital diabetes insipidus and nonobstructive hydronephrosis in which polyuria is responsible for the hydronephrosis.

The objectives of this study were to estimate the potential biomass yield by using the biomass conversion index and evaluate the potential energy production by using the energy conversion index of biomass. Estimating the total biomass yield in Korea showed 9,646.3 thousand tons produced in 2012. Subsequent evaluation of the potential energy production using the estimated biomass yield in 2012 indicated that the calorific values were varied from 3,800 to 4,500 kcal kg<SUP>-1</SUP> for crop- and from 4,100 to 4,300 kcal kg<SUP>-1</SUP> for woody-based biomass, respectively. Among the examined biomass materials, the pruned branch of a nut tree appeared to be the greatest in bio-energy production showing 6,300 kcal kg<SUP>-1</SUP> in calorific value. Total potential energy production from agricultural by-products was estimated approximately at 3,966,000 TOE. Among the agricultural by-products examined, rice straw showed the greatest energy production potential being at 2,321,000 TOE. Furthermore, it might contribute to establishing the countermeasures of biomass utility in agricultural sector based on regional distribution chart of the potential biomass and energy yields in Korea.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the academic achievement of the first year medical students at Gachon University of Medicine and Science based on their characteristics (i.e. age, gender, and academic degree types (bachelors/masters), field of major (biology/ non-biology), and admission variables (i.e. MEET, GPA, attitude, interview, and English test). Methods: The admission scores and demographic information were obtained from 39 students who had entered the university in 2005. T-test was used to examine the differences in academic achievement according to the students characteristics. Correlations between admission variables and academic achievements were examined while multiple regression analysis was used to decipher the influence of students characteristics and admission variables on the academic achievements. Results: This study showed that the academic achievements differed significantly depending on degree level, age, and field of study, but not gender. It was also found that both the Nature Science Reasoning (NSR) of MEET subscale score and GPA score correlated significantly with academic achievement in the first year students. Attitude, interview, and English test scores did not correlate significantly. The result of the multiple regression analysis revealed that NSR 1 and 2, field of major, and age accounted for a substantial amount of the variance in academic achievement. Conclusion: Students with higher scores in NSR 1 and 2 who majored in biology-related fieldsand who are younger tend to do better academically in their first year of medical school. The results of this study may be helpful to graduate medical schools in designing effective admissions strategies for recruiting students, as well as, in planning the curriculum to improve the academic achievements of medical students.
