        Cough Inhibition Activity of Schisandra chinensis in Guinea Pigs

        Chronic cough is very common in respiratory clinics, and no effective drugs are available. Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. (S. chinensis), an important traditional Chinese medicine, has been extensively prescribed for patients with a persistent cough. Preliminary research indicated that 95% ethanol extracts (EE) of S. chinensis showed remarkable antitussive activity in guinea pigs exposed to cigarette smoke (CS). To find out the antitussive ingredients of S. chinensis, EE was divided into four fractions according to the polarity: petroleum ether extract (PEE), ethyl acetate extract (ECE), n-butyl alcohol extract, and residue extract. The antitussive, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects of the four fractions were evaluated in a guinea pig model of cough hypersensitivity induced by CS exposure. Eighteen main constituents of the two effective fractions, PEE and ECE, were identified using ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography electronic spray ion time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The cough inhibition activities of compound 1, 3, 9, 10, 17 were evaluated on citric acid induced acute cough guinea pigs. The results showed that the antitussive activity of EE was almost all contained in PEE and ECE. The 16 major peaks in PEE were identified as 15 lignans (1–12 and 14–16) and 1 triterpene (compound 13), and 3 major peaks (1, 17, and 18) in ECE were also identified as lignans. Three doses of five compounds brought about a significant decrease in number of cough efforts (P < .01), and the cough inhibition rates were between 40.9% and 85.1%. Therefore, lignans are the antitussive ingredients of S. chinensis.

        Cubic Spline Trajectory Generation with Axis Jerk and Tracking Error Constraints

        This paper presents a cubic spline trajectory generation algorithm that produces continuous position, velocity, and acceleration profiles for CNC machines with confined axis jerk and tracking error. A series of reference knots are connected using cubic spline functions in time t for constructing axis trajectories. They are generated in such a way that continuity up to the second derivative is preserved along the overall composite curve. For CNC machines governed by a typical PID controller, the tracking error is also constrained as well as the velocity, acceleration, and jerk for each axis. The time intervals between each pair of adjacent knots are scheduled such that the machining time is minimized subject to all the constraints. Experiment results are presented to illustrate the application of the algorithm.

        Ginsenoside compound K protects human umbilical vein endothelial cells against oxidized low-density lipoprotein-induced injury via inhibition of nuclear factor-kB, p38, and JNK MAPK pathways

        Background: Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) causes vascular endothelial cell inflammatory response and apoptosis and plays an important role in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. Ginsenoside compound K (CK), a metabolite produced by the hydrolysis of ginsenoside Rb1, possesses strong anti-inflammatory effects. However, whether or not CK protects ox-LDL-damaged endothelial cells and the potential mechanisms have not been elucidated. Methods: In our study, cell viability was tested using a 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2yl-)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Expression levels of interleukin-6, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, tumor necrosis factor-a, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blotting. Mitochondrial membrane potential (DJm) was detected using JC-1. The cell apoptotic percentage was measured by the Annexin V/ propidium iodide (PI) assay, lactate dehydrogenase, and caspase-3 expression. Apoptosis-related proteins, nuclear factor (NF)-kB, and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathways protein expression were quantified by Western blotting. Results: Our results demonstrated that CK could ameliorate ox-LDL-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) inflammation and apoptosis, NF-kB nuclear translocation, and the phosphorylation of p38 and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). Moreover, anisomycin, an activator of p38 and JNK, significantly abolished the anti-apoptotic effects of CK. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that CK prevents ox-LDL-induced HUVECs inflammation and apoptosis through inhibiting the NF-kB, p38, and JNK MAPK signaling pathways. Thus, CK is a candidate drug for atherosclerosis treatment.

      • Analysis of non-point and point source pollution load in DongPieHong Ditch

        In this study, the DongPieHong Ditch were taken as the research object, five sampling points were set to measure the COD, NH<sub>3</sub>-N,TNandTPindexes. The correlation and principal component analysis were used to judge the main pollution sources and calculate pollution contribution rate. According to the population in the basin, the load of point source pollution into the river was estimated. As a result, the load of COD, NH<sub>3</sub>-N and TP into the river was 323.04t/a, 43.8t/a and 3.9t/a, respectively. According to the statistics of the rainfall in the basin, the concentrations of COD, TP and NH<sub>3</sub>-N in the initial rainwater were measured and calculated for non-point source pollution, and the results shown that the inflow loads of COD, NH<sub>3</sub>-N and TP into the river were 34.59t/a, 0.12t/a and 0.71t/a, respectively. It was found that the main cause of the pollution in the east flash flood gully was point source pollution, and the proportions of COD, NH<sub>3</sub>-N and TP into the river were 90.33%, 99.72% and 84.61%, respectively.

        Changes in Enteric Neurons of Small Intestine in a Rat Model of Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea

        Background/Aims Physical and/or emotional stresses are important factors in the exacerbation of symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Several lines of evidence support that a major impact of stress on the gastrointestinal tract occurs via the enteric nervous system. We aimed to evaluate histological changes in the submucosal plexus (SMP) and myenteric plexus (MP) of the distal ileum in concert with the intestinal motor function in a rat model of IBS with diarrhea. Methods The rat model was induced by heterotypic chronic and acute stress (CAS). The intestinal transit was measured by administering powdered carbon by gastric gavage. Double immunohistochemical fluorescence staining with whole-mount preparations of SMP and MP of enteric nervous system was used to assess changes in expression of choline acetyltransferase, vasoactive intestinal peptide, or nitric oxide synthase in relation to the pan neuronal marker, anti-Hu. Results The intestinal transit ratio increased significantly from control values of 50.8% to 60.6% in the CAS group. The numbers of enteric ganglia and neurons in the SMP were increased in the CAS group. The proportions of choline acetyltransferase- and vasoactive intestinal peptide-immunoreactive neurons in the SMP were increased (82.1 ± 4.3% vs. 76.0 ± 5.0%, P = 0.021; 40.5 ± 5.9% vs 28.9 ± 3.7%, P = 0.001), while nitric oxide synthase-immunoreactive neurons in the MP were decreased compared with controls (23.3 ± 4.5% vs 32.4 ± 4.5%, P = 0.002). Conclusions These morphological changes in enteric neurons to CAS might contribute to the dysfunction in motility and secretion in IBS with diarrhea. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2016;22:310-320)

      • Predictive Value of Excision Repair Cross-complementing Rodent Repair Deficiency Complementation Group 1 and Ovarian Cancer Risk

        Objective: We aimed to analyze the association between excision repair cross-complementing rodent repair deficiency complementation group 1 (XRCC1) and ovarian cancer risk. Methods: We performed a hospital-based case-control study with 155 cases and 313 controls in China. All Chinese cases with newly diagnosed primary ovarian cancer between May 2005 to May 2010 in our hospital were invited to participate within 2 months of diagnosis. Controls were randomly selected from people who requested general health examinations in the same hospital during the same period. SNPs in EXCC1, ERCC1 C8092A and ERCC1 T19007C, were analyzed by PCR-RFLP method. Results: We observed a non-significantly increased risk of ovarian cancer among individuals with ERCC1 8092TT compared with those with the 8092CC genotype (adjusted OR=1.55, 95% CI%=0.74-2.97). Moreover, 19007TT genotype carriers also showed a non-significant increased risk of ovarian cancer over those with the 19007CC genotype (adjusted OR=1.78, 95% CI%=0.91-3.64). Conclusion: Our firstly investigation of links between polymorphisms in the ERCC1 gene and the risk of ovarian cancer in Chinese population demonstrated no significant association. Further large sample studies in Chinese populations are needed.

      • Detection of Seam Carved Image Based on Additional Seam Carving Behavior

        Seam carving is a kind of content aware image retargeting algorithm and can be applied to resize and deliberately remove objects from digital images. Based on the observation that after applying an additional seam carving operation, the similarity, the energy relative error, and the difference of seam distance of original image are quite different from those of the seam-carved image, we propose and develop a new method for detecting seam carving or seam insertion of natural images without knowledge of the original image. First, we apply an additional seam carving operation to the testing image, then calculate similarity, energy relative error, and difference of seam distance between the testing image and its seam carved version. Last, we extract 11 dimensional features to detect seam carving operation to train a support vector machine classifier for recognizing whether an image is an original or it has been modified using seam-carving. Our experimental results demonstrate that our proposed forensic method achieves not only better detection rate but also lower dimensional features compared with other existing seam carved detection methods.

        Mitigation and Mechanism of Tin Whisker on Micro-bumps by Hard and Soft Underfills

        It is the first time that the mitigation and mechanism of tin whisker on micro-bumps by different types of underfills are investigated under high temperature and humidity (55 ℃/88% RH) storage. Hard epoxy, soft silicone and polyurethane are selected as underfills to spin-coat the 10 μm-diameter and 20 μm-pitch Cu/Ni/SnAg micro-bumps. After six-month storage, underfills exhibite a good mitigation effect despite the surface decomposition, delamination, cracks and voids in varying degrees. Compared with the micro-bumps without underfill, the probability of whisker or hillock and oxidation or corrosion in micro-bumps is reduced by up to 66% and 96%, respectively. Based on the statistics and characterization results, the mitigation mechanism of tin whisker by underfills is proposed. The diameter and critical length of tin whisker are discussed as well to estimate its buckle or penetrate growth. Besides, several underfills failures are summarized. The findings are of great significance to the study of tin whisker mitigation on micro-bumps and provide insights into the reliability of advanced packaging.
