Private Tutoring, Studying Alone, and Labor Market Performance

This paper investigates the effects of supplementary education during high school years, such as private tutoring and studying alone, on post-school labor market performance. Using a representative longitudinal sample of Korean high school seniors in 2004, we find that studying alone has a positive effect on wages after controlling for college entrance exam scores, but private tutoring does not. This implies that private tutoring does not directly affect earning potential, although it may do so indirectly by raising test scores. We also find that both self-directed learning and self-study directed by others are effective for enhancing post-school labor market productivity.
Labor supply of married foreign-born women in credit-constrained households

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In credit-constrained households, some family members who would otherwise not work participate in the labor market. This particular supply of labor, however, is expected to decrease when their families overcome credit constraints. To examine this family investment hypothesis, we develop a test which exploits the dynamic features of the labor supply of married foreign-born women in the United States. Empirical findings, based on the matched March Current Population Survey, are consistent with the hypothesis. This paper also finds that previous results which refute the hypothesis are reversed when the sample is confined to women working in low-skill jobs.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We examine the family investment hypothesis using a dynamic labor supply model. </LI> <LI> Our approach produces implications for the occupations and work hours of married women in credit-constrained households. </LI> <LI> To test the family investment hypothesis, the sample must be confined to women working in low skilled jobs. </LI> <LI> Our results, based on the matched March Current Population Survey, support the family investment hypothesis. </LI> <LI> We find a logic that reconciles the contradicting results found in previous papers. </LI> </UL> </P>
Statistical Discrimination, Employer Learning, and Employment Gap by Race and Education

Tests of statistical discrimination require evaluation records provided by employers or variables that employers do not observe directly but are observed by researchers. As such variables are difficult to obtain, this paper develops a strategy that uses variables available in usual data sets. This paper derives testable implications for statistical discrimination by exploiting the heterogeneity in employer learning processes. Evidence from analysis using the March Current Population Survey for 1971-2016 is consistent with the theoretical predictions. The empirical findings are not explained by alternative hypotheses, such as human capital theory, taste-based discrimination, or search and matching models.

Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has developed a compact coal-gasification system to accumulate our experiment skills. The combustion furnace for residual oil was modified as a small size coal gasifier. Recently, coal feeding system was also upgraded to control coal feed rate more accurately. Our research group has conducted several experiments to find out the effect of O₂/coal ratio on the cold gas efficiency. Furthermore, the effect of N₂/coal ratio on the transport characteristics was also studied. According to the calculation of heat and mass balance, the cold gas efficiency was estimated to the maximum at O₂/coal ratio of around 0.73. But small size gasifier such as ours required higher value of O₂/coal ratio than that of the theoretical estimation. On the optimal N₂/coal ratio, we noticed that the coal feed rate was intimately related with the transporting gas pressure and the pipe diameter.
Survival and pattern of Recurrence in Bevacizumab for advanced cervical cancer

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and pattern of recurrence of bevacizumab and chemotherapy in persistent, recurrent, or metastatic cervical cancer. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 1) patients with persistent, recurrent, or metastatic cervical cancer treated at SNUH from 2014.4 to 2018.2 and 2) all patients for treatment with cisplatin plus paclitaxel and bevacizumab every 3 weeks until disease progression or unacceptable toxic effect or complete response. Results: Of 57 patients, 36 (63%) patients had recurrent disease, 7(12.3%) patients had persistent and 14 (24.6%) had metastatic disease at treatment. The prior exposition to platinum was 29 (50.9%). Grade 3 or 4 adverse events possibly related to bevacizumab included hypertension (n= 3, 5.3%), febrile neutropenia (n= 4, 7%), or fistula (n=1, 1.8%). During follow-up, there were 21 deaths(36.8%) and 24 recurrence (42.1%) (distant n=10, 41.7%, locoregional n=13, 54.2%, or peritoneal seeding n=5, 20.8%), nodal(n=10, 41.7%). The median PFS and OS were 6.64 and 18.20 months, respectively. Conclusion: This study can provide useful information about clinical efficacy and recurrence pattern of bevacizumab combined with chemotherapy about patients with recurrent, persistent or metastatic cervical cancer.

The integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) system is well known for its high efficiency compared with that of other coal fueled power generating systems. In this study, gasification using different types of burners with different oxygen supply angles in a bench-scale entrained flow gasifier was investigated. The effects of the oxygen gas supply angle of the coal burner and resulting oxygen supply location in the gasifier on the syngas composition and temperature of the gasifier were experimentally examined. These changes had a significant influence on the syngas composition of the final stream, carbon conversion, and efficiencies. According to the experimental results, the models using the Aspen Plus process simulator were positioned to define the effects of the experimental parameters and to find the optimum operating conditions in the bench gasifier facility.
A rapid antimicrobial susceptibility test based on single-cell morphological analysis

<P>A rapid antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) is desperately needed in clinical settings for fast and appropriate antibiotic administration. Traditional ASTs, which rely on cell culture, are not suitable for urgent cases of bacterial infection and antibiotic resistance owing to their relatively long test times. We describe a novel AST called single-cell morphological analysis (SCMA) that can determine antimicrobial susceptibility by automatically analyzing and categorizing morphological changes in single bacterial cells under various antimicrobial conditions. The SCMA was tested with four Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute standard bacterial strains and 189 clinical samples, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase–positive <I>Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae</I>, imipenem-resistant <I>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</I>, methicillin-resistant <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I>, and vancomycin-resistant <I>Enterococci</I> from hospitals. The results were compared with the gold standard broth microdilution test. The SCMA results were obtained in less than 4 hours, with 91.5% categorical agreement and 6.51% minor, 2.56% major, and 1.49% very major discrepancies. Thus, SCMA provides rapid and accurate antimicrobial susceptibility data that satisfy the recommended performance of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.</P>
오디오 메타버스 컨셉 구현 및 서비스 제안: 청각 AR 러닝앱 사례를 중심으로

가상현실과 증강현실은 복잡한 기술적 도전에 효율적 해결책을 제시하지 못하면서 대중의 관심에서 멀어지게 되었다. 이후 스마트폰의 등장과 함께 다시 주목 받으며 하드웨어와 소프트웨어 기술 분야의 통합된 연구 시도와 글로벌 기업들의 적극적인 투자로 응용 기술 뿐만 아니라 콘텐츠 플랫폼으로 그 생태계를 확장해가며 가상현실과 증강현실은 기술적으로나 응용적으로 상호보완적 가능성을 형성하고 있다. 특히 가상현실 및 증강현실 관련 기술개발과 응용 콘텐츠 증대는 가상세계 개념인 메타버스를 미래의 중요한 변화로 현실화 시키고 있다. 메타버스는 단순한 가상공간의 개념을 넘어 현실세계가 당면하고 있는 사회, 문화, 경제, 기술적 환경 변화와 문제 해결의 필요성 등 복합적 요인들이 작용하여 사회 전 분야에서 그 가능성을 보이고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 가상공간의 속성을 포함한 메타버스의 사용경험 요소로서 시각적 정보의 한계를 지적하며, 실감기술의 사용경험 최적화를 위한 가상공간의 청각적 특성과 그 가능성을 살펴볼 필요성을 제안하고자 한다. 특히 오디오 메타버스라는 개념을 제시하며, 시각화된 콘텐츠 위주의 메타버스 환경을 제공하는 것에서 벗어나 공간에서 갖는 소리의 실재감과 몰입감을 통해 가상세계를 구현하고 현실세계와 통합되어 체험할 수 있고 기존 메타버스 콘텐츠와 같이 사회적 소통기능을 포함할 수 있는 컨셉을 구축한다. 오디오 메타버스 사용자는 실제로는 현실세계에 위치해있고, 오디오로 구현된 가상적 공간을 통해서 해당 공간특성을 경험하고 같은 가상환경에 접속한 타인과 소통할 수 있는 구조이다. 이러한 컨셉의 구체적인 가능성을 청각 AR 러닝앱 서비스로 제시하고자 한다. 청각 AR 러닝앱 사용자는 러닝앱을 통해 경험을 원하는 오디오 메타버스 가상환경을 선택하고, 위치정보를 기반으로 움직임을 확인해 실제 사용자의 움직임을 가상환경에 접목해 다중채널로 배치된 사운드 소스를 통해 가상환경에서의 실재감과 몰입감을 느낄 수 있게 한다. 팬데믹 시대가 장기화되면서 건강에 대한 관심과 운동 문화, 운동 콘텐츠가 매우 증가했는데, 사용자가 이어폰과 같은 음향기기를 착용하고 스마트폰을 통해 러닝앱에 접속해 운동을 하면서 각각 다른 물리적 환경에 있지만 오디오 메타버스 시스템을 통해 가상환경에서 러닝크루를 만들고 타인과의 사회적 교류가 가능할 수 있는 서비스 사례이다.
