Prolonged Conflict and Reconciliation between India and Pakistan

Sandip Kumar Mishra 통일연구원 2019 International journal of korean unification studie Vol.28 No.2

The paper looks at the sources and trajectory of the conflicts between India and Pakistan which have colonial and post-colonial elements. The paper identifies religious identity, partition, border disputes, and Pakistan’s quest for symmetry with India through various arrangements as the primary causes of the India-Pakistan conflict. The paper also talks about various governmental and non-governmental reconciliation attempts between the two countries in the last seven decades. Although these reconciliation attempts have not been very successful, they have maintained some minimal exchange between the two countries. Finally, the paper analyzes the causes of the prolongation of the India and Pakistan conflict by enumerating various spoilers in the process. These spoilers have been the domestic politics of India and Pakistan, terrorist groups operating from Pakistan, the domestic political power structure of Pakistan, and the rise of Hindu nationalism in India along with economic backwardness. Finally, the paper concludes that the prospect for peace between the two countries in the short-term appears improbable.

Support vector regression with parameter tuning assisted by differential evolution technique: Study on pressure drop of slurry flow in pipeline

Sandip Kumar Lahiri,Kartik Chandra Ghanta 한국화학공학회 2009 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.26 No.5

This paper describes a robust support vector regression (SVR) methodology that offers superior performance for important process engineering problems. The method incorporates hybrid support vector regression and differential evolution technique (SVR-DE) for efficient tuning of SVR meta parameters. The algorithm has been applied for prediction of pressure drop of solid liquid slurry flow. A comparison with selected correlations in the literature showed that the developed SVR correlation noticeably improved prediction of pressure drop over a wide range of operating conditions, physical properties, and pipe diameters.

Japan and Two Koreas in the Changing East Asia : Contests with the Foe and the Friend

Vol.- No.127

Japan’s relations with Korea have been quite complicated. The complication is product of both events on the Korean peninsula such as division of Korea, the Korean War and legitimacy contests between North and South Korea as well as changing inter-state equations in the region. In the given context, it is understandable that Japan has been contesting with North Korea which got aligned with the USSR and China after its very inception. But it is difficult to understand the contest of Japan with South Korea as both the countries share common friend in the US and common concerns in the form of China and North Korea. Actually, Japan and South Korea are both vibrant liberal democracies and their economic development models have also been quite similar. Japan and South Korea also have huge cultural and educational exchanges in past few decades. The contests of Japan with a foe (North Korea) and a friend (South Korea) are seemingly located in their colonial history, identity issue and territorial disagreements. On most of these issues, North and South Korea both find difficult to agree with Japan. With the emergence of Japan’s quest to become ‘normal’ power and changing inter-state relations in East Asia, North and South Korea both got alarmed because of their past historical experiences. An aggressive Japan is considered unacceptable and the most imminent threat for Korea as well as the region. In the above context, the paper seeks to explore the nature, trajectory and cause of Japan’s contests with North and South Korea.

Territorial Issues in South Asia and Northeast Asia: A Comparative Perspective

2016 The Korean Journal of Security Affairs Vol.21 No.1

The paper seeks to analytically understand origins, nature and manifestations of territorial disputes in South Asia and Northeast Asia. By comparing and contrasting the two regions, it concludes that there are certain fundamental differences along with equally substantial similarities between them. The comparison between the two regions is ventured by bringing colonial origins, strategic significance, economic benefits, and domestic politics aspects of these disputes. It is being argued that to move out of the deadlock on the territorial disputes in both the regions, emotive and ideational issues must be recognized as the keys and attempts to address them must be ventured at. By looking at the two regions, paper also shows that presence or absence of regional multilateral institution in the region is also of just limited benefit. The realization that these disputes may become source of future conflict by the dominant powers of the region and mutual recognitions of one another``s national sentiments would be the beginning of any real resolution of these disputes. The paper is an attempt to learn how the nature and course of territorial disputes are affected by the absence or presence of a particular variable.

China’s Quest for Dominance in Northeast Asia

Vol.26 No.-

China seems to believe in the theories of ‘rise and fall of great power’ and ‘power-transition’ and have been preparing itself for the inevitable shift. China assumes that a similar process has unleashed in its global rivalry vis-à-vis the US and even though it looks ambitious to think the Northeast Asia as a Chinese influence zone, it may become reality in future. The source of Chinese optimism does not come only from its growing military strength but also from its huge economic exchanges with the other countries of the region. The implications of economic interdependence in the Northeast Asia and beyond would make it difficult for any regional country to antagonize China. Chinese ambition for more and domineering space in the region has been largely realized in the economic sphere and even if it does not spill over in the political and security affairs, it would definitely and decisively give China an upper hand in the region. Chinese policy is also posited on the assumption of certain decline of the US and a possible continuation of its own rise.

      • Bio-waste onion skin as an innovative nature-driven piezoelectric material with high energy conversion efficiency

        Maiti, Sandip,Kumar Karan, Sumanta,Lee, Juhyun,Kumar Mishra, Avnish,Bhusan Khatua, Bhanu,Kon Kim, Jin Elsevier 2017 Nano energy Vol.42 No.-

Abstract

Development of non-toxic, ultra-sensitive, and flexible bio-inspired piezoelectric nanogenerator has become a great challenge for next generation biomedical applications. High performance organic/inorganic materials based piezoelectric nanogenerators suffer from several unavoidable problems such as complex synthesis and high toxicity. Biodegradable and biocompatible piezoelectric material is utmost needed in in-vivo condition to harvest energy for biomedical applications. Here, we report a novel bio-piezoelectric nanogenerator (BPNG) using naturally abundant self-aligned cellulose fibrous untreated onion skin (OS) as efficient piezoelectric material having piezoelectric strength of ∼ 2.8 pC/N. The fabricated OSBPNG generated output voltage, current, instantaneous power density and high piezoelectric energy conversion efficiency of ≈ 18V, ≈ 166nA, ≈ 1.7μW/cm2, and ≈ 61.7%, respectively, and turn on 30 green LEDs by a single device under repeated compressive stress of ≈ 34kPa and ≈ 3.0Hz frequency. In addition, maximum output voltage (≈ 106V) was achieved when 6 units are connected in series, which instantaneously turns on 73 combined LEDs (30 green, 25 blue, and 18 red). OSBPNG is highly effective during throat movement such as coughing, drinking and swallowing. Furthermore, because it works at very low pressure originating from heart pulse or beat, it could be used in pacemakers and health care units. Finally, OSBPNG successfully differentiates speech signals, indicating its potential for speech recognition.

Highlights

Novel homespun approach for bio-piezoelectric nanogenerator (OSBPNG) using onion skin.

Plant materials are more useful than living creatures in both handling and supply.

It works at low pressure even from heart pulse, that can be used in health care unit.

OSBPNG shows output voltage of 18 V with high energy conversion efficiency (61.7%).

Maximum output voltage (106 V) achieved by assembling 6 units, which turn on 73 LEDs.

Graphical abstract

Naturally driven bio-waste and biocompatible onion skin base piezoelectric nanogenerator with high output performance (output voltage and area power density of ≈ 18V, and ≈ 1.7μW/cm2) and high energy conversion efficiency (≈ 61.7%) has been fabricated through simple homespun device fabrication method. • Hiding Messages using Musical Notes: A Fuzzy Logic Approach

2015 International Journal of Security and Its Applicat Vol.9 No.1

“Music can be used as a communicable language”. Musical symbols and musical notes have been used as codes and ciphers from early days. The art of encrypting messages using music is termed as Musical cryptography and it uses predefined set of notes and set of rules for composing musical pieces which in turn are musical cryptograms. Traditional algorithms applied to musical cryptography used simple substitution cipher which merely produced good musical sequences. To overcome this problem a fuzzy logic based algorithm for musical cryptography is proposed in this paper. The paper proposes a symmetric key substitution cipher which uses one of the n candidate notes to encrypt a particular character. The application of fuzzy logic in musical cryptography produces acceptable musical sequences which are hard to be suspected as cipher.
