Frequencies of Aggressive Behaviors in Win, Lose, and Tie Situations

        ( S. M. VaezMousavi ),( M. Shojaie ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2005 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.17 No.1

Results from previous studies on aggression-performance relationships in sport may have not been simply approved, since they have been based on the results of whole games and seasons. The present study examined scores of the games at the time aggressive behaviors occurred and compared their frequencies in three situations: when team was ahead (win), behind (loss), or equal (tie) in scores; both in girls and boys. The present paper argues that if there is any relationship between aggressive behavior and the results, it should be found when the aggressive behavior is taking place; meaning the end outcome of the game may not be a good indicator of the situation in which aggressive behavior occurs. All competitions in 2004 nation high schools championship (including 115 teams, 302 matches, and 1531 players in volleyball, basketball, handball, football, and futsal) were closely observed and their aggressive and assertive behaviors were recorded. Results indicated that both sex committed more goal aggressions in loss, win, and tie situations, respectively. It was also found that the frequencies of aggressive and assertive behavior were lower in tie situation, comparing to win/lose situation; and that girls showed less goal aggression than boys. The results were discussed in relation to their significance in the context of frustration-aggression hypothesis and showed that aggressive behaviors also occur to prevent losing.

Association between Coaches` Behaviors and Players` Aggressive and Assertive Actions

        ( S. M. VaezMousavi ),( M. Shojaei ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2005 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.17 No.2

Coaches` behavior is one of the most important factors affecting young players` aggressive actions. Coaches` ignorance toward players` unwanted actions may sometimes perceived as positive feedbacks by players and support their aggressive behaviors. It is possible also that some coaches directly encourage players to accomplish aggressive acts. Therefore, "in what extent young players aggressive actions correspond to coaches` behavior?," is the main question that the present study tries to answer. Accordingly, competitions in 2004 nation high schools championship (including 115 teams, 302 matches, and 1531 players in volleyball, basketball, handball, football, and futsal) were closely observed and players` aggressive and assertive behaviors were recorded. To code and analyze coaches` behavior, the coaching behavior assessment system (CBAS) was used. This instrument classifies coaches` behavior in twelve classes and is widely used in studies related to describing and analyzing coaches` behavior. Results indicated that most players` aggressive acts correlated with several coaches` behaviors, namely ignoring mistakes, reinforcement, keeping control, and mistake-contingent technical instruction. Moreover, it was found that girls committed more instrumental and boys more goal aggressions. The results are discussed in relation to the aggression literature. Investigation of causal relation of these behaviors is recommended.

The Effect of the Nature of Precued Parameters on Reaction Time of a Force Production Task

        ( Masoumeh Shojaei ),( S. M. VaezMousavi ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2007 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.19 No.1

Results of previous studies on Parameter Precuing Technique suggested a relationship between reaction time (RT) and number and nature of precued parameters. Most of these studies only examined aiming movements as the experimental tasks. The present study was designed in order to test the effect of the nature of precued parameters on RT in a force production task. A mixed 3 factorial design was performed on non athlete right handed volunteer students (n=16; age=20 to 25). Having applied "Parameter Precuing Apparatus", subjects performed 2400 trials over 5 sessions on successive days (4 blocks of 120 trials per session) under different precued conditions of precuing. The task required production of defined isometric force (3 or 6 kg) toward inside or outside, with the right or left upper limb as quickly and accurately as possible after displaying the stimulus preceded by the precue. The subjects` RT in different levels of independent variable were analyzed by using 3 factor experiments (nature of precued parameter*gender*session) with repeated measures on two of the factors (type of precued parameter & session). It was found that the main effects of nature of precued parameter and session were significant (p<0.05); but the main effect of gender, interaction of nature of precued parameter and gender, and gender and session were not significant (p>0.05). The results are discussed in relation to their significance in the context of current theories and hypotheses on movement programming.
