Effects of Diagnostic Tests on Classroom Teaching and Learning

Vol.26 No.3

The claim that diagnostic testing can improve language teaching and learning is not new, but there is very little work on the usefulness of this important instructional tool. Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research methods, this study examined whether classroom diagnostic tests could provide critical information for the teacher and the students that could make classroom teaching and learning more effective. The results showed that the use of diagnostic tests had a beneficial effect on teaching and learning. The teacher’s time allotment in the experimental group was determined by the number of the students who were already familiar with course objectives. The tests also had a positive effect on the students’ achievement. Implications of the findings are discussed.

“Beyond Stories of Struggle and Triumph”: Re-envisioning the American Immigrant Autobiography in Eva Hoffman’s Lost in Translation

Vol.49 No.2

Published in 1989, Eva Hoffman’s memoir Lost in Translation precedes the age of increased globalization. Considering the discourse of globalization gained much critical attention in the 1980s, however, the memoir was written during a time global modes of thinking started to emerge in order to grasp a wide range of social phenomena. This essay examines how a growing consciousness of increased global mobility and its implications upon experiences of exile and immigration informs the memoir’s form and content. Historically, the immigrant autobiography has been predominantly understood through the teleology of progress and settlement. I argue that the author’s attempt to give shape to her migratory life that unfolds over three nations calls forth a radical re-envisioning of the American immigrant autobiography. Departing from an emphasis on the teleology of progress and settlement, Lost in Translation asks us to conceive the immigrant experience in more global terms by depicting Hoffman’s migratory life as a growing web of affiliations with diverse Eastern European émigré populations sharing the conditions of exile and emigration.

Re-envisioning the Epic through the Second Person Voice in Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s Dictée

Vol.44 No.2

Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s Dictée proliferates with many pronouns. Whether the various subjects invoked in Dictée refer to a single common figure remains ambiguous. By paying close attention to the ambiguity of narrative voice, this essay examines how the creation of narrative ambiguity in Dictée is closely linked to the author’s employment of the second person voice. This essay particularly attends to how Cha explores the narrative possibilities of the second person voice in the text’s “Calliope/Epic Poetry” section in order to reflect upon experiences of exile and migration on a transnational scale. Through the intimacy and narrative ambiguity of the second person voice, Cha is able to create an epic on migration that is not only transnational in scope, but also invites the reader to engage with the self-alienating aspects of exilic and immigrant life in an unusually intimate yet powerful manner.

Reading as Close Encounter: The Intimacy of "You" in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's "The Thing Around Your Neck"

Vol.25 No.3

Compared to first and third person narration, second-person narration has held a less frequent presence within modern prose fiction. Due to its rare occurrence, scholars have given it little critical attention. It was not until the early 1990s that second-person narration came to be recognized and discussed by critics in more extensive ways. A distinctive feature of the second-person voice that differentiates it from other modes of narration is that it creates a peculiar kind of experience for the reader. It invites active reader involvement by making the reader feel as if being addressed. Drawing upon the insights of recent critical work on second-person voice and its impact on the way the reader comes to relate to the story's character, this essay examines how second-person narration in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's short story, "The Thing Around Your Neck," offers an innovative means for exploring the precarious nature of contemporary migratory life experienced by women in the Nigerian diaspora. I argue that the intimacy of second-person narration allows the reader to closely engage with the female migrant's affective state and internal struggles. In "The Thing Around Your Neck," the text emerges as a powerful medium through which the reader is able to connect with a figure that holds a rather invisible and highly marginalized place in society.

Vol.34 No.-

Historically, problems related to settlement have deeply informed narratives of immigration in the U.S. However, as many critics have recently pointed out, an emphasis upon the teleology of settlement has undergone a stark change over the last two decades. This paper examines how Juno Diaz narrates migration in Drown (1996) which departs from the more traditional teleology of settlement. A striking feature of Drown’s collection of short stories is how they are far from being a group of disparate narratives and can be rather read as a network of loosely inter-connected stories. This essay shows how the collection’s loosely inter-connected structure allows Diaz to narrate migration beyond the teleology of settlement. It argues that such a departure is critically enabling. By enabling the narrative ambiguity invoked by Drown’s network-like form, the shape given to a collective memory of displacement and migration informing the Dominican and Latin American diaspora in the late twentieth century is clearly drawn.

Vol.44 No.-

Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s experimental text, Dictée, is a text that asks us to engage with problems of translation. Major criticism has particularly focused on how the text introduces sites of translation in the form of dictation and translation exercises. Moments of dictation and translation appearing in Dictée invite critical reflection upon the asymmetries of power relations informing processes of language learning and immigration. This essay examines how Cha’s writing in Dictée enlarges notions of translation by bringing attention to varied forms of interpretation and mediation that emerge in the context of Korea’s colonial and postcolonial condition. Drawing upon the insights of Venuti’s discussion of translation as a cultural practice that is informed by the asymmetries of power, this essay argues that Dictée calls for critical engagement with the Korean colonial and postcolonial condition by pointing to the failures of translation shaped by the legacies of various cultural and political forces. Far from being limiting and thus failing, the gaps and holes of translation in Cha’s writing not only speak to the scandals of translation, but also call for acts of re-translation.

MATHEMATICAL UNDERSTANDING OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND UNCONCIOUSNESS

NAMI LEE,EUN YOUNG KIM,CHANGSOO SHIN 한국산업응용수학회 2017 Journal of the Korean Society for Industrial and A Vol.21 No.2

This paper approaches the subject of consciousness and unconsciousness from a mathematical point of view. It sets up a hypothesis that when unconscious state becomes conscious state, high density energy is released. We argue that the process of transformation of unconsciousness into consciousness can be expressed using the infinite recursive Heaviside step function. We claim that differentiation of the potential of unconsciousness with respect to time is the process of being conscious in a world where only time exists, since the thinking process never have any concrete space. We try to attribute our unconsciousness to a special solution of the multi-dimensional advection partial differential equation which can be represented by the finite recursive Heaviside step function. Mathematical language explains how the infinitive neural process is perceived and understood by consciousness in a definitive time.

High School Students' Sugar Intake Behaviors and Consumption of Sugary Processed Food Based on the Level of Sugar-related Nutrition Knowledge in Seoul Area

        Joo, Nami,Kim, Shin-Kyum,Yoon, Ji-young The Korean Society of Community Nutrition Vol.22 No.1

Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate high school students' sugar intake behaviors, the status of consuming sugary processed foods, the awareness of sugar, and the experience and interest in sugar-related education based on the level of sugar-related nutrition knowledge. Methods: In this study, five high schools were selected in Seoul, Korea, and a survey was conducted in 400 students on the level of sugar-related nutrition knowledge and sugar intake status. A total of 349 questionnaires were used for the final analysis. For statistical analysis, descriptive statistics was performed; a t-test, ${\chi}^2$ test, and Friedman test were used for comparative analysis. Results: The study results showed a positive association between the knowledge level of sugar and the appropriate sugar intake behavior and sugary food choices. The group with more nutrition knowledge on sugar was found to have good eating habits and to eat less sugary food. The main sources of sugar were beverages, confectionary, and bakery goods in the corresponding order, irrespective of the level of nutrition knowledge related to sugar. A significant difference was found in the groups' awareness of the sugar content of the drinks with 89.4% for the higher-knowledge group, and only 81.5% for the lower-knowledge group (p < 0.05). Results also showed that 43.9% of the higher-knowledge group and 36.4% of the lower knowledge group were interested in participating in education on sugar. Conclusions: This study result indicated the need to help adolescents to avoid excessive sugar intake from only certain favorite foods. Therefore, it is necessary to seek a systematic foundation for participatory education in order for them to maintain a low sugar intake in daily life and lead healthy eating habits by increasing their level of sugar-related information and knowledge.
