Titania (TiO2) nanoparticles have been synthesized using organic precursor technique. The titania nanoparticles were characterized. The results indicated that the prepared titanium oxalate and citrate precursors were transformed to anatase TiO2 phase at temperature 400 8C for 2 h. Dye-sensitized solar cells were assembled using the prepared nanocrystalline TiO2 with large surface area. The specific surface area SBET was 80.9 and 78.6 m2/g using oxalic and citric acids, respectively. The power efficiency was 3.5 and 2.4%. A brief discussion on the possible reasons behind the low power conversion efficiency observed for these type of solar cells was reported.

Effects of a Cordia salicifolia (porangaba) extract on the labeling of blood cells (BCs) with technetium-99m (99mTc) and on the morphology of red BCs were evaluated. Labeling of cellular and molecular structures with 99mTc depends on a reducing agent. Some physical characteristics, as visible absorbance spectrum, electric conductivity, and refractive index of this porangaba extract, were also determined. Blood samples from Wistar rats were incubated with porangaba extract or with 0.9% NaCl (control). Labeling of blood constituents with 99mTc was performed. Plasma (P) and BCs, both soluble (SF-P and SF-BC) and insoluble (IF-P and IF-BC) fractions, were separated. The radioactivity in each fraction was counted, and the percentage of radioactivity incorporated (%ATI) was calculated. Blood smears were prepared, fixed, and stained, and the morphology of the red BCs was evaluated. Data showed an absorbance peak at 480 nm and electric conductibility and refractive index concentration-dependent. Porangaba extract decreased significantly (P < .05) the BC, IF-P, and IF-BC %ATI, and no modifications were verified on the shape of red BCs. Analysis of the results reveals that some physical parameters could be useful to aid in characterizing the extract studied. Moreover, it is possible that chemical compounds of this extract could have chelating/redox actions or be capable of binding to plasma and/or cellular proteins.
AMUSE-FIELD. II. NUCLEATION OF EARLY-TYPE GALAXIES IN THE FIELD VERSUS CLUSTER ENVIRONMENT

<P>The optical light profiles of nearby early-type galaxies are known to exhibit a smooth transition from nuclear light deficits to nuclear light excesses with decreasing galaxy mass, with as much as 80% of the galaxies with stellar masses below 10(10) M-circle dot hosting a massive nuclear star cluster (NSC). At the same time, while all massive galaxies are thought to harbor nuclear supermassive black holes (SMBHs), observational evidence for SMBHs is slim at the low end of the mass function. Here, we explore the environmental dependence of the nucleation fraction by comparing two homogeneous samples of nearby field versus cluster early-type galaxies with uniform Hubble Space Telescope (HST) coverage. Existing Chandra X-ray Telescope data for both samples yield complementary information on low-level accretion onto nuclear SMBHs. Specifically, we report on dual-band (F475W and F850LP) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) imaging data for 28 out of the 103 field early-type galaxies that compose the AMUSE-Field Chandra survey, and compare our results against the companion HST and Chandra surveys for a sample of 100 Virgo Cluster early-types (ACS Virgo Cluster and AMUSE-Virgo surveys, respectively). We model the two-dimensional light profiles of the field targets to identify and characterize NSCs, and find a field nucleation fraction of 26%(+ 17%)(-11%) (at the 1 sigma level), consistent with the measured Virgo nucleation fraction across a comparable mass distribution (30%(+ 17%)(-12%)). Coupled with the Chandra result that SMBH activity is higher for the field, our findings indicate that, since the last epoch of star formation, the funneling of gas to the nuclear regions has been inhibited more effectively for Virgo galaxies, arguably via ram pressure stripping.</P>

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is the most frequent coagulation disorder associated with metastatic prostate adenocarcinoma. However, DIC as an initial presentation of prostate cancer with primary fi brinolysis is extremely rare. The appropriate treatment to control bleeding in these situations is challenging, controversial and based on isolated case reports in the literature. A 66-year-old male presented at the emergency department with acute severe spontaneous ecchymoses localized to the limbs, latero-cervical hematoma and hemothorax. Prostate specifi c antigen level was 385 μg/L, bone scintigraphy revealed multiple bone metastases and prostate biopsy confi rmed adenocarcinoma (Gleason 9; 4+5). Laboratory investigation showed a pattern of primary fi brinolysis rather than the more common intravascular coagulation mechanism. Epsilon aminocaproic acid in monotherapy was initiated with a clear and rapid control of bleeding manifestations. This rare case of massive bleeding due to hyperfi brinolysis as the fi rst manifestation of prostate cancer suggests that in selected cases where the acute bleeding dyscrasia is clearly associated to a dominant fi brinolysis mechanism it is possible to use an approach of monotherapy with antifi brinolytics.

The corrosion behavior of a new, advanced Ti-20Zr alloy with α+β microstructure (determined by opticalmicroscopy, XRD, and SEM) and very good mechanical properties (obtained from the stress-strain curve)is studied in this paper. The composition of the alloy native passive film was determined from a XPS analy-sis and the long-term corrosion resistance in undoped and doped states with 0.05M NaF artificial Carter-Brugi-rard saliva of different pH values, simulating the severe functional conditions of a dental implant, was analyzed byelectrochemical methods. This alloy possesses an advantageous balance between good mechanical resis-tance and plasticity and Young’s modulus and exhibits more favorable electrochemical parameters and cor-rosion resistance than CP Ti due to its more resistant passive layer containing Ti2O3, TiO2, and ZrO2 protectiveoxides. After 1000 h of immersion in saliva, the protective properties of the alloy were enhanced due tothe deposited surface layer that incorporated protective phosphates (shown by SEM and XPS).

Alterations in plasma cholesterol concentrations, especially increases in low-density lipoprotein (LDL), are well-known risk factors in the development of atherosclerosis. Numerous studies have examined the lipid-lowering effects of functional soy-containing foods, but few have specifically examined soymilk, with equivocal findings reported. In September 2008, a single-blind, randomized, controlled trial was conducted on 32 postmenopausal women at Baylor University, Waco, TX, USA. After a 2-week run-in period, subjects were randomly assigned to consume three servings of vanilla soy (n=16) or reduced-fat dairy (n=16) milk per day for 4 weeks. Plasma lipid profiles were obtained pre- and post-supplementation. Plasma high-density lipoprotein, LDL, and triglycerides were not significantly different between groups post-intervention (P=.45) or from baseline (P=.83). Separate analysis of plasma total cholesterol levels yielded similar results (P=.19 and P=.92, respectively). Furthermore, subanalyses controlling for dyslipidemia (n=23) and lipid-lowering medication usage (n=28) did not significantly alter results. Despite good dietary compliance, our study failed to show a significant hypocholesterolemic effect of soymilk consumption in this postmenopausal female population. Potential reasons for this nonsignificant finding are discussed, and future research directions are presented.

<P>The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) is responsible for most selective protein degradation in eukaryotes and regulates numerous cellular processes, including cell cycle control and protein quality control. A component of this system, the deubiquitinating enzyme USP14, associates with the proteasome where it can rescue substrates from degradation by removal of the ubiquitin tag. We previously found that a small-molecule inhibitor of USP14, known as IU1, can increase the rate of degradation of a subset of proteasome substrates. We report here the synthesis and characterization of 87 variants of IU1, which resulted in the identification of a 10-fold more potent USP14 inhibitor that retains specificity for USP14. The capacity of this compound, IU1-47, to enhance protein degradation in cells was tested using as a reporter the microtubule-associated protein tau, which has been implicated in many neurodegenerative diseases. Using primary neuronal cultures, IU1-47 was found to accelerate the rate of degradation of wild-type tau, the pathological tau mutants P301L and P301S, and the A152T tau variant. We also report that a specific residue in tau, lysine 174, is critical for the IU1-47–mediated tau degradation by the proteasome. Finally, we show that IU1-47 stimulates autophagic flux in primary neurons. In summary, these findings provide a powerful research tool for investigating the complex biology of USP14.</P>

Haraldiophyllum hawaiiense sp. nov. is described as a new mesophotic alga and a new genus record for the Hawaiian Islands. Six specimens were collected at a depth range of 81-93 m from Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, and their morphology investigated, as well as molecular phylogenetic analyses of the plastidial ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase large-subunit (rbcL) gene and a concatenated alignment of rbcL and nuclear large-subunit rRNA gene (LSU) sequences. Phylogenetic analyses supported H. hawaiiense sp. nov. as a distinct lineage within the genus Haraldiophyllum, and sister to a large clade containing the type species, H. bonnemaisonii, as well as H. crispatum and an undescribed European specimen. The six Hawaiian specimens were shown to be identical, but unique among other species of the genus as well as the recently segregated genus Neoharaldiophyllum, which comprises half of the species previously included in Haraldiophyllum. The vegetative morphology of H. hawaiiense sp. nov. resembles Neoharaldiophyllum udoense (formerly H. udoensis); however, no female or post-fertilization structures were found in the Hawaiian specimens to allow a more comprehensive comparison. The molecular phylogenies demonstrate that Haraldiophyllum is paraphyletic, suggesting either that the Myriogrammeae tribe includes undescribed genera, including Haraldiophyllum sensu stricto, or that Neoharaldiophyllum species should be transferred into the genus Haraldiophyllum. However, based on vegetative morphology and molecular analyses, and pending resolution of this taxonomic issue, the Hawaiian specimens are placed within the genus Haraldiophyllum. This new record for the Hawaiian Islands highlights the novel biodiversity from mesophotic depths, reaffirming the need for further investigation into the biodiversity of Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems.

Muscle from mantle, fins and arms of squid (Dosidicus gigas) were compared based on lysyl oxidase activity (LOX), chemical/structural and thermodynamic properties of highly cross-linked collagen. The arms collagen presented the highest temperature (Tp) and enthalpy of transition. The arms collagen thermic properties may be explained by the higher imino amino acid content, proline and lysine hydroxylation degrees. Moreover, among the regions, the collagen from the arms had a more intense b band chain, hydroxymerodesmosine peak in the resonance magnetic nuclear spectra and pyridinoline peak in the Raman spectra. Fins showed the highest LOX activity. The LOX activity was associated with the Tp, proline and lysine hydroxylation degrees. These results implied that the collagen in the arms was more intermolecularly ordered than the mantle and fins, and may provide a theoretical basis for a better understanding of the thermal behaviour of squid tissues during management and processing.
